DNA Decodes: PoK, Balochistan Protests On Pakistan's Independence Day

India.com2 days ago
On Pakistan's Independence Day, while citizens in major cities like Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi marked the occasion with celebrations, a markedly different picture emerged from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), where anti-army and anti-government slogans resonated through the streets. Several of these slogans were aimed directly at Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir and have been echoing in PoK's towns and villages for the past 24 hours.
In today's DNA, we analyzed the evolving situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Balochistan, where Independence Day has sparked widespread protests against military dominance and demands for freedom.

Visuals from the region show protesters, including children, chanting pointed slogans asking when the people of Pakistan would gain freedom from the military. One slogan referenced 'Kasheer Desh,' a local expression for Kashmir, highlighting a growing sentiment among sections of PoK's population for freedom from Pakistan and integration with Jammu and Kashmir. Protesters allege that the Pakistani Army has kept PoK's population under its boots for decades, suppressing dissent and denying rights.
The slogans, raised especially on Pakistan's Independence Day, also referred to Munir's recent trip to the United States. Protesters accused the army chief of making lofty claims abroad while ignoring the ground realities in PoK, which, they say, the people, even children, clearly understand.
Protest In Balochistan
In Balochistan, the day was also observed with demonstrations. Here, too, Independence Day brought displays of discontent, with protesters waving black flags. The province has long seen demands for freedom from Pakistan. Protesters and activists claim that the region suffers from sustained military oppression, where those who speak against the army or government face the risk of being forcibly disappeared.
Baloch leader Mir Yar Baloch posted on social media, declaring that the 'Republic of Balochistan' rejects Pakistan's Independence Day.
Critics from both PoK and Balochistan argue that Pakistan is still 'shackled' not by colonial powers, but by poverty, hunger, unemployment, and, above all, military dominance. They point out that although Pakistan adopted democracy after independence, no prime minister has ever completed a full five-year term, with the military seen as the ultimate authority. Currently, they say, while Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is the nominal head of government, real power rests with General Asim Munir, under whose direction national decisions are made. Protesters assert that genuine freedom for Pakistan's people will only come when these 'chains of slavery' are broken.

US team scraps visit, trade talks with India stuck on agri hurdle

The India-US negotiations for a trade deal, which began in February after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the United States, have come to a halt, and the US negotiators' scheduled visit to India later this month stands cancelled, a source aware of the development told The Indian Express. The breakdown in trade talks assumes significance as US President Donald Trump has announced 50 per cent tariff on Indian products, the highest on any country globally. While 25 per cent tariff has already come into effect, government officials have said the levy of another 25 per cent – for Russia oil trade — could depend on 'how geopolitical events unfold'. The Indian Express had first reported on August 8 that the negotiations for a trade agreement had hit a pause, and the arrival of the US trade team was uncertain, as no formal communication had been received from their side. The deal has been stuck over India's long-standing stance of protecting farmers in every trade agreement. The US, under Trump, is prioritising market access for its agricultural products. In his Independence Day speech on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated that India would not compromise on the well-being of its farmers, fisherfolk and cattle keepers, amid the standoff with the US over access for American products in India's agriculture and dairy market. On August 7, too, after Trump announced the additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, Modi had said that he would not compromise 'even if it entailed paying a very heavy personal price'. The geopolitical factor The uncertainty over when the tariffs on India could ease may drag on, as Trump's high-stakes talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin did not result in a Russia-Ukraine ceasefire. However, Trump said he and Putin had made progress during the meeting in Alaska. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has warned that the secondary tariffs on India could increase if 'things don't go well' during the Trump-Putin talks. 'I think everyone has been frustrated with President Putin. We expected that he would come to the table in a more fulsome way. It looks like he may be ready to negotiate. And we put secondary tariffs on the Indians for buying Russian oil. I could see, if things don't go well, then sanctions or secondary tariffs could go up,' Bessent said in an interview with Bloomberg earlier.

Fishermen blame Centre; to go ahead with rail blockade agitation in Ramanathapuram district

Blaming the Union government squarely for the arrests and impounding of trawlers by Sri Lankan Navy, the Tamil Nadu fishermen on Saturday said that they would intensify their agitations. The fishermen have not been venturing into the sea for the last week due to the 'continued' arrests under charges of poaching. On Independence Day, they observed a token fast in Thangachimadam with families and children. On Saturday, the Ramanathapuram district administration had invited the striking fishers for a talk. However, it failed, they claimed. Speaking to media persons, fishermen leaders Emerit, Jesu Raj and among others said that the Union government had not taken any tangible steps to solve the issue with Sri Lankan government over the last five years or a decade. As a result, hundreds of fishermen were arrested and trawlers impounded. Under such circumstances, they told the officials that without any assurance from the governments, they would not withdraw the stir. In the last two months alone, 64 fishermen were arrested. On top of it, the fishermen were also jailed for six months to two years depending on the charges of repeating the offence. Hence, they announced to go ahead with the rail blockade stir on August 19.

‘Not a single rupee released…': Cong MLA flags Telangana govt's inaction over ‘uncleared bills'

A Congress MLA in Telangana on Friday took a swipe at his own government's alleged inaction in clearing pending bills for development works. Congress MLA Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy(Facebook/Komatireddy Reddy) According to an NDTV report, MLA Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy, without naming Revanth Reddy, said these clearances require the chief minister's approval. He was speaking during an event to celebrate the Independence Day in his constituency Munugode. "You take the posts, but do you also take the money? Take the positions, but pay the contractors who have done the work. Don't do injustice to the people of Munugode," Komatireddy Reddy said. Further clarifying that he is not neither criticising the chief minister or his party, Komatireddy Reddy alleged that 'not a single rupee has been released for roads or buildings". 'The contractor refuses to continue work on the Veligonda-Choutuppal road project because bills have not been cleared. These clearances require the chief minister's approval. That is why I raised this concern directly to him. I am not criticising either the chief minister or the party... Not a single rupee has been released for roads or buildings,' NDTV quoted him as saying. "Even after repeated requests and numerous attempts to approach ministers, there has been no response. Should I not question whether posts and funds are being monopolised?" he added. According to the report, the MLA has recently spoken out against the state leadership, but this time, his remarks targeting Revanth Reddy have caused unease among Congress leaders. The NDTV report further said that Congress's state disciplinary action committee has taken note of RKomatireddy Rajgopal Reddy's comments and its chairman, Mallu Ravi, is likely to meet him. Revanth Reddy's swipe Earlier this week, Telangana chief minister Revanth Reddy had taken an indirect swipe at Rajagopal Reddy, according to NDTV. "In politics, out of ten people who want to sit on the same chair, nine will be disappointed. Whether they are from a family, caste, region, or you will show disappointment... It could cause harm to you, us, the state and nation," the chief minister had said.
