Bangladesh to cooperate with Malaysia on investigation of its nationals on terror activity
The agreement was made during a bilateral meeting between Bangladesh Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain and Malaysian Foreign Minister Dato Haji Mohamad Bin Haji Hasan on the sidelines of the 32nd ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Ministerial Meeting in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.
The Foreign Adviser expressed his concerns with the arrests of Bangladeshi nationals over allegations of terrorism. He reiterated the firm stand of the Government against terrorism and sought Malaysia's cooperation in its own investigation into the allegations through exchange of information and findings. The Malaysian Foreign Minister assured to facilitate access and cooperation with the Bangladesh authorities, the statement said.
Earlier, the Foreign Advisor met with the UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, where the two leaders held discussions on diverse bilateral, regional, and multilateral issues. Both sides discussed, among others, the ongoing reforms in Bangladesh, the Rohingya crisis, and post-LDC graduation support, among other topics, it said.
The Foreign Adviser also called on Winston Peters, the Foreign Minister of New Zealand, Hon Vijitha Herath, the Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka, and Park Yoonjoo, the Vice Minister and Head of Delegation of the Republic of Korea, where a wide range of bilateral and multilateral issues were discussed.
Bangladesh became a member of ARF in 2006, a forum established in the early nineties to promote confidence and trust among its 27 members, which include countries in the broader Asia-Pacific region.
At present, Bangladesh is co-chairing two of the ARF priority areas, 'Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime' and 'Disaster Relief.' The next session of the ARF Ministerial Meeting is scheduled to take place in Manila in 2026.
In the afternoon, the Foreign Adviser delivered the national statement at the Ministerial Meeting of the ASEAN Regional Forum, where he called for greater attention to the Rohingya crisis and consideration of its national and regional security implications.
The Foreign Adviser also urged the ASEAN members to positively consider Bangladesh's bid to become a Sectoral Dialogue Partner, the statement said.
The Foreign Adviser was accompanied Md Shameem Ahsan, the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Malaysia, Md Forhadul Islam, Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other senior officials of the Bangladesh Government. (ANI)

Many pilgrims decline Haj subsidy as awareness grows
KUALA LUMPUR: The number of Malaysian pilgrims opting out of Haj subsidies has risen over the past two years, reflecting increased awareness of financial readiness as a key requirement for the pilgrimage. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar revealed the trend in Parliament today, noting a decline in subsidy uptake among B40 and M40 groups. 'Tabung Haji (TH) is making efforts to explain to Muslims the link between Haj and the condition of affordability. 'Beginning in 2022, the subsidies provided by TH to B40 and M40 pilgrims have been decreasing... this is an effort to educate Muslims on the obligation of Haj,' he said. A total of 396 pilgrims declined subsidies in 2023, followed by 263 in 2024. Mohd Na'im attributed this shift to a growing understanding that performing Haj should only be undertaken when financially capable. The trend has also benefited TH's financial health, with dividend payouts rising to 3.25 per cent last year. On Haj costs and quotas, Mohd Na'im confirmed no price increase for Muassasah pilgrims this year, with fees remaining at RM33,300 per person. Malaysia's official Haj quota, set at 31,600 annually by Saudi Arabia, has been fully utilised from 2020 to 2025. MP moots special data centre to monitor ‘buy now, pay later' transactions

(Rawpixel pic) Kuala Lumpur: A Sarawak MP has urged the government to set up a dedicated data centre to monitor transactions under the 'buy now, pay later' (BNPL) scheme, separate from traditional credit reporting systems. Rodiyah Sapiee (GPS–Batang Sadong) said BNPL data should be excluded from the Central Credit Reference Information System (CCRIS), which is used to assess major loan applications such as for housing and vehicle financing. Advertisement 'CCRIS is directly related to major loan eligibility such as for housing or vehicle financing, and if BNPL data is included, it could negatively impact the ability of lower-income users to obtain future financing,' she told the Dewan Rakyat when debating the Consumer Credit Bill 2025. Instead, Rodiyah proposed the creation of a dedicated BNPL data centre under the Consumer Credit Commission (SKP) which would allow targeted monitoring of BNPL credit risks without affecting users' primary credit histories. 'This will preserve BNPL's effectiveness as a microcredit instrument and a symbol of hope,' she added. Rodiyah cited a recent survey by Shopee's BNPL service SPayLater, which found that 81% of 40,000 Malaysian users relied on BNPL for basic needs, including baby formula and to pay medical expenses. 'This proves that BNPL is not just a financial convenience, but also functions as a micro social safety net during emergencies,' she said. She also suggested that the bill consider financial commitments at the household rather than the individual level. 'While BNPL limits are typically capped at RM2,000 or RM3,000 per person, in reality, a household may have several BNPL accounts that together exceed the family's actual financial capacity. In the end, the burden falls on the head of the household,' she said. Rodiyah also proposed giving BNPL exemptions to micro-businesses, which typically use the service as working capital to acquire short-term inventories. Deputy finance minister Lim Hui Ying earlier tabled the Consumer Credit Bill 2025 for second reading at the lower house. Lim said the bill had been drafted to regulate emerging credit providers such as BNPL companies, with the number of transactions increasing from 83.8 million in the second half of 2024 to 102.6 million in the first half of this year. The total transaction value of BNPL rose from RM7.1 billion in the second half of last year to RM9.3 billion in the first half of this year, an increase of 31%, she said. 'This rapid growth in BNPL may pose risks of harm, especially to vulnerable credit users,' she said. Malaysia, Asean to push for reforms over UN veto powers held by US, UK, France, China, and Russia as Gaza delays spark outrage
KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 — Malaysia, together with ASEAN member states, is proposing reforms to the veto power held by the five permanent members (P5) of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. According to him, although resolutions relating to the Gaza issue were passed with majority support in the UN General Assembly, their implementation was often delayed due to the use of veto power by the permanent members of the UN Security Council, consisting of China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. 'Unfortunately, this veto power was used even though the resolution was unanimously approved at the UN General Assembly. 'That is why we are proposing that this veto power be overhauled and changed. This is what we are doing,' he said during a question and answer session at the Dewan Rakyat today. Mohamad said this in response to a supplementary question by Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (PN-Kuala Krai) on Wisma Putra's further actions following the resolution of the ASEAN-GCC Summit which touched on the atrocities of the Zionist regime. Explaining further, he said the recent ASEAN-GCC Summit marked the success of Malaysian diplomacy in which a joint statement was issued on the Gaza issue for the first time. 'Previously, it was difficult to get a joint statement among ASEAN countries. But now we have succeeded in doing so, including holding a joint conference with Japan and Korea to discuss the issue of the people of Gaza,' he said. He said Malaysia is now actively strengthening cooperation with like-minded countries to voice its stance on the Gaza issue consistently at the international level. — Bernama
