A prominent Queensland, Australia police officer has gone missing following a surf session in Byron Bay. Jay Notaro, the 45-year-old Detective Inspector, went for a surf at Broken Head on Monday, then, when he failed to show up for work, investigators initiated a large-scale search operation.
Reportedly, Notaro's surfboard was found in the search, as was his car parked nearby. However, no Notaro. On Tuesday, shortly after noon, Police Rescue, Marine Area Command, Queensland PolAir, and Surf Life Saving NSW began the search. According to an NSW Police spokesperson:
"The search will focus on the areas between Lennox Head and Cape Byron, particularly in the Broken Head area.'
Judging by reports, Notaro has served as a well-respected and high-profile officer in the Queensland community. Per Queensland Police Union President, Ian Leavers, via Sky News, called Notaro a 'future leader of the police.' He continued:
"Jay is one of the most competent and capable coppers I know. I just hope he is found safely and we have a really good outcome. He is not only a friend, he is one of the future leaders of the organization. If we had more coppers like that we would be a better organization."Byron Bay, and the surrounding areas, aren't typically known for treacherous surf. Instead, the premier spots attract the longboard, neo-hippie, mid-length, alt-craft crowd. And loads of 'em, too; some of the more popular spots can be incredibly crowded on a daily basis. Despite the crowds, it's a dreamy region to be a surfer.
Recently, post Tropical Cyclone Alfred, regions of South Australia were inundated with a mysterious foam in the ocean, which caused over one hundred surfers to fall sick, and sea life to wash up dead on shore. As of now, there's no correlation between the foam and Notaro's disappearance.
The search is ongoing.

Former Fenton Mayor Eddie Alfred Jr. arrested for malfeasance, tampering

FENTON, La. (KLFY) — Eddie Alfred Jr., known as former Mayor of Fenton, was arrested for malfeasance in office and injuring public records earlier today, officials said. In early May, officials were requested by the Village of Fenton Administration to investigate a complaint involving Alfred for allegations of removing village documents upon leaving office, authorities said. As the investigation progressed, officials determined that before leaving office in December 2024, Alfred allegedly deleted electronic files, took possession of documents essential to village operations, and refused to provide information to the new administration. Detectives said they were able to recover some of the files from Alfred's residence. Alfred was taken into custody on an arrest warrant and was processed into the Jefferson Davis Parish Correctional Center with $5000 bond. Alfred was released on bond later today according to public records. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now This investigation remains ongoing. Monroe police officers hailed for bravery, professionalism during mental health crisis

MONROE – Three township police officers rescued a man experiencing a mental health crisis from a fire on May 17. Sgt. Justin Caruso and Officers Wesley Panckeri and Marc Kramer responded to a welfare check, police said, where they encountered an uncooperative man experiencing a mental health crisis. He made multiple threats to harm officers if they attempted to enter the bedroom, according to police. The officers attempted to talk to the man, but a short while after communication ceased, they saw smoke coming from the bedroom, according to police. Officers decided to force the entry, despite the threats of violence, due to the danger the potential fire posed, police said. The officers found the man armed with a knife, and after safely subduing him, they removed him from the burning room, according to police. Police, with the help of Monroe Township Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services, were able to extinguish the fire, police said.
