Manipur: NIA arrests two militants involved in 2024 brutal killing of woman in Jiribam

Mint13-05-2025

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has apprehended two individuals affiliated with banned militant groups for their involvement in the brutal killing of a woman and the subsequent arson and looting of homes in Zairawn village, Jiribam district, Manipur, in November 2024.
The accused, Nongthombam Meiraba from Bishnupur district, is a member of the proscribed insurgent group United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and is alleged to have carried out the actual shooting of the victim, identified as Zosangkim
The second accused, Sagolsem Sanatomba, also known as Surchandra Singh or Piba, hails from Thoubal district and is associated with another banned outfit, the Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL). He is believed to have been part of the militant team responsible for the violent attack, which included the burning and looting of houses in the village.
The two suspects are currently in NIA custody until 17 May as investigations continue. The arrests come six months after the tragic incident, in which a teacher was fatally shot and her body set ablaze, sending shockwaves through the local community.
According to the NIA, the suspects played a direct role in the brutal killing and the widespread destruction inflicted on Zairawn village. The agency's swift action marks a significant step in addressing militancy-related violence in the region and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
Tensions flared up in the several districts of Manipur in November 2024, with fresh violence being reported in Bishnupur. Officials said a woman working in the paddy fields was gunned down by suspected hills-based militants in the Bishnupur district of Manipur.
The incident took place in the Saiton area when the woman, along with other farmers, went to tend to the crops when militants opened fire from hill-based positions on the low-lying farmlands in Imphal Valley, news agency PTI reported.
The woman died on the spot, the officials said, adding the incident sparked tension in the village with the locals alleging that the central forces deployed in the area were not taking action to thwart such attacks.
A 31-year-old woman was reportedly shot and set on fire as people in tribal Hmar village were attacked by a group of armed militants in ethnic strife-torn Manipur's Jiribam district.
Kuki-Zo organisations claimed that a woman, a resident of the village, was killed during the attack.
Villagers found the woman's charred remains one afternoon. Police said the incident occurred in Zairon Hmar village after the group of militants set at least six houses on fire.

HC slams NIA's ‘casual approach' in Darivit case

1 2 Kolkata: Criticising NIA's "casual approach" for not submitting a report in the 2018 Darivit school firing case, Calcutta High Court on Monday directed the agency to file it by July 9. On Sept 20, 2018, two youths were killed at North Dinajpur's Islampur when cops fired on people protesting against appointment of teachers at Darivit High School. The deceased were Tapas Barman and Rajesh Sarkar. Told that the informal report had not been signed yet and would take three more weeks to be submitted, a division bench of justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Reetobroto Kumar Mitra said: "I will give appropriate remarks against your officer. They have become very strong and are thinking what will the high court do. It is a casual approach. Do not justify your conduct. In 2024, you were asked to come with a report." The bench asked the NIA counsel when the charge sheet would be filed. The counsel said: "After the probe is over. It will take some time." Asked for an exact time, the counsel added: "It's a faulty probe by the state authorities. No evidence was collected." The bench also asked the victims' families why they had not accepted the Rs 2 lakh compensation. Their counsel said that the state had initially agreed to pay Rs 20 lakh to each family.

No guarantee when Cong govt will fall, says R Ashoka

Mangaluru: Opposition leader R Ashoka said that there is no guarantee for the Congress govt in Karnataka. "Only two years remain, but there is no guarantee when this govt will fall. All police stations here have been made Congress stations. Mangaluru City police commissioner and the SP of Dakshina Kannada were transferred only to ensure that the police department dances to the tunes of the govt," Ashoka told reporters here on Monday. "The BJP delegation led by BY Vijayendra has sought answers from police officials on the legal grounds on which police knock on the doors of Hindu activists during midnight. Police should serve notice before conducting such raids. Police do not take initiatives to deport Pakistan and Bangladesh nationals," he said. He suspected the involvement of anti-national elements from Kerala and Pakistan in the murder of Suhas Shetty. "The banned PFI is involved in it, and there is a need to find the source of their funding. We are confident that the NIA will bring all facts to light," he said. In response to a query on MLC BK Hariprasad's statements questioning the necessity of an NIA probe into the murder of Suhas Shetty, as he was a rowdy-sheeter, Ashoka said that there are many definitions for a rowdy-sheeter. "How many cases does DK Shivakumar have, and didn't he go to jail? In how many cases has Rahul Gandhi obtained bail? The court should decide who is a convict," he said.
