OT7 Finals: Garcia's takeaways from Saturday's action
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The pool play rounds of the 2025 OT7 Finals are now behind us as more of the nation's top prospects turned heads in South Florida on Saturday. Rivals was again on hand and provided some fresh takeaways from the action.

The Saturday Quarterback Clinic
The initial day of OT7 featured play-making from every position, but the quarterbacks were especially dominant on Saturday. We counted single-digit interceptions tossed on the entire day and night while high point totals were simultaneously achieved.

In amassing a top performers list, at least half of a top 10 would include passers who sprayed it all over the field from Dereon Coleman (Miami), Derrick Baker, Briggs Cherry (Louisville), Gavin Sidwar (Missouri), Maika Eugenio (Hawaii), Neimann Lawrence and many more.
The clear weather was an indicator of precise QB play on this day.
Jared Curtis Settles In
The big-time passer headed to Georgia has a big frame and the big arm attached to it, something he has showed off on routine at OT7. When power and/or distance is needed, the five-star is seemingly at his best.
He admitted there has been an up-and-down pace to his first club 7-on-7 event, but when Curtis has been right, it has looked plenty good to the point the Matt Stafford comparisons seem to make more and more sense.

His team has taken some tough losses, so he'll be up against elimination early on championship Sunday.

Cam Newton's Calls
The former Heisman Trophy winner commands his own attention in any setting, and he doesn't run from it, but there should be more said and/or written in regards to his longevity and true involvement with C1N.
He is calling plays, letting his emotions fly and most importantly orchestrating perhaps the emerging favorite of this national tournament.
Newton's squad, captained by breakout quarterback prospect Derrick Baker, goes for a 'one-point gamble' after every score and it has executed on a high enough level to convert well more than not.
Youth Movement
Among the stars of Saturday were a trio of 2028 recruits, from IMG Academy's do-it-all talent Eric McFarland, who kicked off the day with multiple scores and the type of yards after contact that already separates him as a national recruit, to more dominance from Brysen Wright on the outside. The Jacksonville native made the play of the day Friday and continued to get behind defenders on Saturday in another multi-score showing.

South Floridian Amir Sears continues to look like one of the more lengthy and instinctive players regardless of class or position, making plays at both wide receiver and defensive back.
Maika Eugenio's Flowers
There is just a buzz when the Lo-Pro quarterback, who is committed to Hawaii, takes the field. He pilots the nation's top 7-on-7 club, which exited the weekend as not only the No. 1 seed for the championship on Sunday, but ran through its schedule undefeated and scored the most points along the way.
Eugenio has the charisma to lead, but his play doesn't get spoken of enough. He processes like few passers nationally and can deliver to all three levels with both great accuracy and timing. Sure, he's small in stature and won't project like a potential No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick, but he just racks up wins at Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman High School and everywhere in between.
I wouldn't bet against him continuing to prove his worth at Hawaii either.

Shohei Ohtani throws fastest pitch of MLB career in third mound start for Los Angeles Dodgers
Shohei Ohtani threw the fastest pitch of his MLB career on Saturday as he continued his return to the mound with two innings during the Los Angeles Dodgers' 9-5 defeat to the Kansas City Royals. Making just his third start as a pitcher for the Dodgers, Ohtani threw a fastball to Vinnie Pasquantino on an 0-2 count that clocked in at 101.7 mph and was grounded into a double play by the first baseman. The Japanese two-way superstar couldn't contain his smile as he walked back to the dugout. 'It's something that I don't think I would have been able to do in a live BP (batting practice) setting, so it's nice to be able to hit this velo and see how my body reacts,' he said afterward through interpreter Will Ireton, per 'I felt pretty good about being able to come back and pitch well, especially considering when I first had the surgery – the second time through was a lot better in terms of recovery than the first time through,' added Ohtani, who did not pitch in his record-breaking debut season for the Dodgers last year after undergoing his second Tommy John surgery in 2023. 'Just talking to the doctor, he was very confident that I was able to come back at full form.' Ohtani's 101.7 mph was the Dodgers' fastest of the season and the franchise's second-fastest since the beginning of 2023. Four of the seven pitches which have clocked in at over 100 mph for the Dodgers this year were thrown by Ohtani on Saturday, according to 'There's a little bit of stress, and that's when you start seeing the hundreds and trying to bully guys,' said manager Dave Roberts, per 'And I still thought the sweeper was good, the sinker was good, but no one knows himself better than he does. And so, again, today I thought he was still in control, and it was still good to see triple digits.' While Saturday's pitch was the fastest of his MLB career, Ohtani has previously dialed it up to 102 mph for Team Japan during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Remarkably, that pitch was also to Pasquantino. '(Ohtani) keeps doing that to me,' said the Royals man on Saturday, per 'I just saw the fastest pitches he's ever thrown in his career – two of them are against me. His two hardest throws. I need to talk to him.' The Japanese star allowed one hit to Bobby Witt Jr. and one walk to Maikel García during the first inning at Kauffman Stadium, before sending the Royals down one-two-three in the second. In total, he threw 27 pitches, 20 of which were strikes, and struck out one batter – Jac Caglianone. At the plate, he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. During his five seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, Ohtani had 86 starts on the mound, going 38-19 with an ERA 3.01.

Kansas City Chiefs OL Trey Smith reflects on health issues before the 2021 NFL Draft
During the latest episode of New Heights, Travis Kelce and his brother Jason welcomed Kansas City Chiefs offensive guard Trey Smith. The Pro Bowl offensive lineman opened up about his battle with blood clots at Tennessee. "One week in conditioning, we were doing half-gassers, and I passed out. I had never passed out. I couldn't breathe well," said Smith, "I lost 13 pounds in a day. I remember talking to our team doctor, 'Hey, you guys gotta run more tests on me; I feel terrible. And he's like, 'We're gonna do a blood draw, just go ahead and go to class." Advertisement After starting at left tackle during his sophomore season, Tennessee's medical staff discovered blood clots in Smith's lungs and ruled him out indefinitely. The issue was identified in February 2018, before the start of spring practice. "They rush me to the hospital and figure out that I have blood clots in both sides of my lungs," said Smith, "So that was sort of one of those moments where it's like, man, can I still play football? Like, what does this mean? And pretty much, I was working with the doctors for five months. (I had to go on) blood thinners." Smith started all ten games in his last collegiate season, earning first-team All-SEC honors for the Volunteers. "So it was a crazy experience. But in my junior year, I was able to play the entire season. Decided to stay at Tennessee, "said Smith, "I made a promise to my deceased mom, Dorsetta Smith, that I would get my degree and play in the NFL one day. So I kept my promise."
