Anwar: Retirement age proposal not yet discussed by Cabinet, requires thorough study

Malay Mail22-05-2025
KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said the proposal to raise the retirement age to 65 requires careful study before it can be presented to the Cabinet.
The suggestion, made by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, was put forward in her personal capacity, citing the concept of 'active ageing.'
However, Anwar clarified that the matter has not been raised or discussed in Cabinet meetings.
When asked about his views on the proposal, Anwar said: 'Let them (the ministry) study it first.'
'Usually, the suggestion needs to be discussed before it is presented at the Cabinet meeting. There are a lot of implications involved in the proposal, such as the financial cost and new job opportunities.
'The idea deserves attention and consideration, but let the agencies involved discuss it first,' he told reporters after launching the Hadiah Bahasa 2025 award at Hilton Kuala Lumpur today.
Since 2012, the mandatory retirement age for civil servants has been set at 60 years. This is also the minimum retirement age for private sector employees under the Minimum Retirement Age Act 2012.

Anwar thanks security personnel on duty at rally, reaffirms commitment to democratic freedoms

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today expressed his deep appreciation to all security personnel and volunteers who ensured public safety and the smooth running of today's gathering in the capital. "I extend my utmost gratitude to all members of the security forces, (namely) the police, fire and rescue department, medical personnel, and volunteers, who served with speed, discipline, and dedication in maintaining public order and ensuring the event proceeded smoothly," he said in a statement posted on his Facebook today. Anwar also thanked those who participated in the gathering, regardless of their purpose, whether to voice opinions, show solidarity, or simply observe. "To all those who attended, whether to express your views, show support, or who travelled from afar, I wish you a safe journey home. "May you travel safely and under divine protection," he said. As the prime minister, Anwar reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to democratic principles, particularly the freedom of speech and the right to express dissent. "Criticism and differing views should not be seen through a lens of hostility. "Instead, they must be allowed to flourish as the lifeblood of a mature, progressive, and sovereign nation. "What matters is that such expression is carried out peacefully, respectfully, and in the spirit of patriotism," he said. He said this principle is reflected in the Prime Minister's Question Time (PMQT) in Parliament, where members of parliament are free to pose any questions directly to him. "I urge all of you to continue pressing your elected representatives to attend and actively participate in all sessions, especially PMQT," he added. He said he also encouraged continued dialogue and constructive discourse beyond street demonstrations. "I invite everyone to engage in national dialogue, to find common ground, and to build this country together, not only in the streets, but through meaningful efforts in new arenas of knowledge, innovation, and progress, to move Malaysia forward with strength and energy," he said. He also invited the public to return to Kuala Lumpur in the future, citing ongoing efforts to conserve key historical landmarks in the capital, including the iconic Sultan Abdul Samad Building at Dataran Merdeka. "These efforts are part of a wider plan to boost tourism and strengthen the economy of our capital, rich with history, hope, and national spirit, particularly in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026, which promises a variety of exciting activities, Insya-Allah," he said.

In a Facebook post today, he expressed gratitude to security and emergency personnel and called for continued democratic engagement beyond protests. 'I extend my utmost appreciation to all members of the security forces — from the police, fire department, medical teams, and volunteers — who have served with agility, discipline and high dedication,' Anwar said, crediting them for ensuring public safety and a smooth event. Addressing the crowd that had gathered, Anwar wished them safe journeys home and urged continued participation in national discourse. 'Criticism and differing views should not be seen through the lens of hostility,' he wrote. 'In fact, they must continue to flourish and thrive as the lifeblood of a mature, progressive and sovereign nation-state.' Anwar, who has long styled himself a reformist leader, said he remains 'steadfast and consistent' in upholding democratic principles, particularly the right to free speech and criticism. He also pointed to the Prime Minister's Question Time (PMQT) in Parliament as proof of his administration's openness to scrutiny. 'Members of Parliament are free to ask any question directly, and to raise objections to me as prime minister directly,' he said. 'I urge you to continue pressing MPs to attend and actively participate, especially in PMQT.' The prime minister went on to invite Malaysians to move beyond protest alone, encouraging them to 'engage in dialogue and discourse, find common ground, and chart and build this nation together.' He added, 'Not merely on the streets, but by rising to explore, master and seize new frontiers so that this country can be propelled forward with strength and vigour.' Ending his post on a forward-looking note, Anwar invited the public to return to Kuala Lumpur in the near future, highlighting upcoming restoration efforts at historic sites such as the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. 'These landmarks are undergoing large-scale conservation so we can boost tourism and support the economy in the capital, rich with historical value, hope, and national spirit, especially in conjunction with the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026,' he said. The Facebook post comes after a peaceful rally earlier in the day, organised by Opposition figures and civil society groups to protest against the rising cost of living and demand political accountability. Among the speakers were Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, former prime ministers Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, Perikatan Nasional information chief Datuk Seri Azmin Ali and Gerakan president Datuk Dominic Lau. Police said the event ended without incident. – Malay Mail Anwar Turun rally free speech kuala lumpur
