Hamburg residents previously rejected the opportunity to become the select city for
the games
at the ballot box in 2015.
But now they could be persuaded by the promise of a new stadium, which would become home to Hamburg after the Games.
The new $1billion arena could boast a capacity between 60,000 to 70,000.
And it will be built even if Germany's bid to host the
summer
Olympics fails, according to Germany Interior Senator Andy Grote.

Hamburg mayor Peter Tschentscher has backed the project and handed over the necessary bid documents to the DOSB - Germany's Olympic body.
He said: "The bids of previous decades consisted of a city being rebuilt to accommodate the Olympic Games. And we reversed this principle."
The city shouldn't adapt to the Games, "but rather we adapt the Olympic concept to our city," he added.
The new stadium would be built right
next
to Hamburg's iconic Volksparkstadion, which has been their home since 1953.

Roy Keane is not having Thierry Henry's 'greatest ever' shout for one position

Manchester United and Republic of Ireland icon Roy Keane has dismissed Thierry Henry's praise for ex-Arsenal and Chelsea defender Ashley Cole as being the best left-back he's witnessed. The Englishman carved out an illustrious tenure in north London starting from 1999, swiftly becoming a stalwart under Arsene Wenger and clinching two Premier League titles, alongside three FA Cups, contributing significantly to Arsenal's memorable 2003/04 Invincibles season. Despite Cole's over 200 appearances for the Gunners, his legacy was tinged by his contentious transfer to Chelsea in 2006, leading Henry to lament the lack of recognition for Cole as one of European soccer's supreme left-backs, with Keane offering a contrary viewpoint. "There is a guy that I want to talk about, who I don't understand why in this country he doesn't get his respect: Ashley Cole," Henry expressed on The Overlap's Stick to Football podcast. "Ashley Cole was outstanding. Firstly, in 2000, Ashley went to Crystal Palace on loan, and he saved them from relegation, playing as a winger. "When you have a left-back that can dribble past their winger, he was the one who created space for the rest of the team at Arsenal. He started everything. "For me, Ashley Cole is the best left-back I have ever seen. Me. I'm not talking about everybody. Ashley Cole... going forward, defending, the desire, what he won and why he won it." Henry, who shared the pitch with Cole 195 times at Arsenal, was met with a differing opinion from Keane, who remarked: "I think he was a brilliant player, but when you talk about great left-backs, he doesn't spring to my mind. Of course, he was a brilliant player." In response to Keane, Henry defended Cole's legacy, particularly in light of his contentious transfer from Arsenal to Chelsea, asserting: "Ashley Cole is an Arsenal man. "His whole family supports Arsenal. But I can understand why he left at the time. In 2005, David Dein shook hands on a deal, but he came back with something else. "With Ashley moving to Chelsea, people don't give him the respect he deserves for everything that he has done. But for me, Cole was outstanding." Dein, the former vice-chairman of Arsenal, had many triumphs during his tenure but has confessed that one of his greatest regrets was allowing Cole to leave, a decision that still resonates years after his 2007 departure from the club. Cole was presented with a substantial salary increase by the Stamford Bridge bosses, leading to an eight-year tenure filled with success. His trophy haul with the Blues includes a league title, a Champions League, Europa League, League Cup, Community Shield and four FA Cups. He's often mentioned in discussions about the greatest left-backs of all time, alongside soccer legends such as Roberto Carlos, Marcelo and Paolo Maldini.

World Boxing say they were 'not correct' to have named Imane Khelif in sex-test statement

WORLD BOXING ON Wednesday apologised to the Algerian federation saying it had been incorrect to name boxer Imane Khelif in a statement announcing mandatory gender testing to determine the eligibility of male and female athletes wanting to take part in its competitions. The breakaway international federation — of which Ireland's governing body is a member — said it was introducing the policy after the furore surrounding boxers including women's welterweight gold medallist Khelif at last year's Paris Olympics. World Boxing will organise the boxing competition at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics after being granted provisional recognition by the International Olympic Committee. World Boxing said it had informed the Algerian Boxing Federation Khelif would have to undergo the test if she wanted to compete at the Eindhoven Box Cup in the Netherlands on 5-10 June. But the federation rowed back on having named Khelif in their statement. 'The president of World Boxing does not think it was correct to have a named a specific athlete in a statement issued last Friday,' the body said. World Boxing, it continued, 'has written personally to the president of the Algerian Boxing Federation to offer a formal and sincere apology which acknowledges that greater effort should have been made to avoid linking the policy to any individual'. Advertisement Under the new policy, all athletes over 18 that want to participate in a World Boxing-sanctioned competition will need to undergo a PCR, or polymerase chain reaction genetic test, to determine what sex they were at birth and their eligibility to compete. The PCR test is a laboratory technique used to detect specific genetic material, in this case the SRY gene, that reveals the presence of the Y chromosome, which is an indicator of biological sex. The test can be conducted by a nasal or mouth swab, or by taking a sample of saliva or blood. National federations will be responsible for testing and will be required to confirm the sex of their athletes when entering them into World Boxing competitions by producing certification of their chromosomal sex, as determined by a PCR test. Khelif's success at the Paris Olympics, along with that of Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting, sparked a raging gender eligibility debate, with high-profile figures such as US President Donald Trump and Elon Musk weighing in. Khelif and Lin were disqualified from the International Boxing Association's 2023 world championships after the organisation, the long-standing governing body of amateur boxing, said they had failed gender eligibility tests. The IOC has severed links with the IBA over financial, governance and ethical concerns. The IBA is led by the Kremlin-linked Russian Umar Kremlev. Last month the IOC provisionally recognised World Boxing as the body to oversee the sport at future Games. – © AFP 2025

Sir Alex Ferguson slapped Man Utd wonderkid on the head and walked off after chat about Barcelona's transfer interest

FORMER Manchester United wonderkid Febian Brandy turned down the chance to sign for Barcelona after a cheeky slap on the head from Sir Alex Ferguson. Brandy, 36, never broke into the first team at Old Trafford after nearly 15 years on the books - but things could have been very different. And his reputation spanned across Europe too, as both Real Madrid and Barcelona were so impressed by Brandy's efforts in a youth tournament that they lodged a £1MILLION bid for the youngster. The offer was rejected by United boss Advertisement READ MORE ON MAN UTD Manchester-born Brandy told SunSport: "We went to a few tournaments when we were 14 to 16 years old. "One of the tournaments that sticks out was one in Spain. In the tournament there was teams like "We didn't qualify out of the group stages, but I must have had a worldie of a tournament because I ended up getting player of the tournament. 'About two weeks after the tournament, some Spanish guy - I don't know how he got the number - rang my mum and dad's house phone. 'About two weeks later I went into training and Sir Alex Ferguson walked past me in the corridor and said 'have you heard?'. Advertisement "I had a feeling what he was talking about, but you have to be respectful so I played dumb. He said 'Barcelona are interested in you, what are your thoughts?' 'I said, 'Listen, boss. I'm a local lad. I'm from Manchester and I see my career here, this is the place that I want to be'. Then he just slapped me on the head, called me a good lad and walked away. 'Things started to come to fruition in the weeks that followed, and I think they [Barca] made a £1million bid which obviously Sir Alex rejected and I didn't hear anything of it from then.' That decision meant that Brandy stayed put until 2010, leaving as a 22-year-old in search of a new challenge after coming up through the youth ranks alongside the likes of Ravel Morrison, Jonny Evans and Danny Welbeck. Advertisement Brandy had gone from training with the likes of He had lined up a deal with Sheffield United in the Championship, but broke his metatarsal in the last minute of his last game for Man Utd's reserves - scuppering the move. From there injuries meant Brandy was never able to settle at one club, kickstarting a journeyman-like career that saw him play in Greece and Thailand as well as for the likes of People ask 'should I have signed for Barcelona?' Don't get me wrong, the weather would have been nicer, but I've got no regrets. Febian Brandy That journey - which included 16 different clubs - ended in 2017 with non-league outfit Ebbsfleet, but Brandy has no regrets over turning down Barcelona. Advertisement He said: "I always saw myself playing for Man Utd, I didn't really know anything else. I only really knew Man Utd and 'But I thought to myself, for my career, this has to happen. I didn't want to be one of those players that was 23/24 and signing contracts just to be at a big club. "I wanted to go and make a name for myself elsewhere. I was obviously upset, but it was something that had to be done. 'People ask 'should I have signed for Barcelona?'. Don't get me wrong, the weather would have been nicer, but I've got no regrets. "I had a lot of injuries and there's things like that that I could have done better to have a better career. Other than that, I have no regrets.' 6 Brandy moved to Sheffield United later in his career Credit: Blades 6 The forward also represented England at youth level Credit: Getty Advertisement One of the big reasons for Brandy being left with no regrets is that it was his Man Utd exit that led him to his latest venture - Skouted. Brandy launched Skouted when his career came to an end, an app that helps unattached players find new clubs and clubs find the best new talent. The app, which allows young players to upload clips of themselves playing for top clubs to browse through, has already helped in excess of 300 youngsters earn trials. Had Brandy not embarked on his journey through the leagues, then he may never have started the app. Advertisement He explained: "When I was in my late 20s I had been battling with so many injuries and I started to think about my future. "I didn't really want to be a coach or a manager. That's when I started to put Skouted in place. 'I've always had an entrepreneurial mindset and I think what really triggered it was that when I was at Man Utd, I was pretty fortunate to be there as long as I was. "I was fortunate to get a contract every year from the age of eight until I was 22. Advertisement 'I had friends that might not have been good enough to make it at Man Utd, but they might have been able to go and play at a lesser club. "But when they got released their parents or their guardians didn't have the connections to pick up the phone to someone in the Championship or League One and ask for a trial. 'That's when I thought to myself, 'I need to create something that's going to bridge that gap between players and clubs'. "Something where football clubs can find these players and players have got a platform to present themselves in front of these football clubs.'
