Cubs agree to contract extension with president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs locked in president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer for the long term, agreeing to a multiyear contract extension on Monday.
The 51-year-old Hoyer's contract was set to expire at the end of the season — his 14th with the Cubs. He was hired as general manager in 2011 and replaced Theo Epstein as president of baseball operations in 2020.
The announcement came hours before Chicago opened an important three-game series at NL Central rival Milwaukee. Led by All-Stars Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Tucker, the Cubs were tied with the Brewers with a league-best 62-43 record.
In a statement, Hoyer said he's 'so grateful' for the 'trust and support' of the Ricketts family owners and called the Cubs 'a special organization with an amazing fan base.'
"I'm excited to keep building on the momentum we have and to work with a terrific baseball operations staff to consistently deliver a championship-caliber team for this great city,' he said.
Chairman Tom Ricketts praised Hoyer and his staff for building 'a healthy player development organization' and putting 'an exciting, playoff contending team on the field.'
"We are looking forward to the rest of the season and to working with Jed for years to come,' he added.

The Americans, frustrated throughout the meet with a case of 'acute gastroenteritis' picked up in a training camp in Thailand, surged on Saturday with three golds to bring their gold-medal leading total to eight. Australia has seven. The Americans have several gold-medal chances in Sunday's eight finals. Among them: world-record holder Bobby Finke in the 1,500 free, and the men's and women's 4x100 medley relays. The Americans have the fastest qualifying times in both relays. West Indies hold their nerves to beat Pakistan in T20 thriller
LAUDERHILL, Fla. (AP) — Jason Holder took four wickets and then smashed a boundary off the final ball of the game to lift West Indies to a thrilling two-wicket victory over Pakistan on Saturday and level the three-match Twenty20 cricket international series. The veteran allrounder bowled an inspired spell to take 4-19 off four overs, as Pakistan struggled to 133 for nine after it won the toss and batted in Florida. The West Indies reply also stumbled as Pakistan's spinners kept scoring difficult but late cameos by Gudakesh Motie and Romario Shepherd kept West Indies just about in the contest before Holder's heroics off Pakistan talisman Shahid Shah Afridi's final delivery clinched it. It is the first T20 victory for West Indies in seven matches, a span that includes a heavy 5-0 series defeat to Australia, on top of a test series sweep last month. Henderson hits 3-run homer in the 8th in the Orioles' 4-3 victory over the Cubs
CHICAGO -- Gunnar Henderson hit a three-run homer in a four-run eighth inning and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3 on Saturday for their seventh victory in 10 games.
