Genting's Q1 earnings plunge to RM4.5mil versus RM588.7mil a year ago
Group revenue stood at RM6.51 billion, down 12 per cent from the previous year's corresponding quarter of RM7.43 billion.
Genting attributed the lower revenue mainly to the leisure and hospitality division.
The group's adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) for Q1 2025 of RM1.99 billion was lower than the RM2.57 billion posted in Q1 2024.
The strengthening of the ringgit against Singapore dollar, pound sterling and US dollar partly contributed to the lower group revenue and Ebitda.
Genting said Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) recorded lower revenue and profit.
"The results for Q1 2025 was affected by a lower VIP rolling win rate and the temporary closure of Hard Rock Hotel for renovation and rebranding works, which led to a reduction in available room inventory.
"RWS' performance was also weaker in comparison with Q1 2024 where Singapore saw stronger visitorship and tourism spending during the Chinese New Year festive season along with the relaxation of visa regulations between China and Singapore in February 2024."
Resorts World Genting (RWG) recorded lower revenue over 1Q24, due to the timing of the festive season and lower business volumes in the premium players segment in Q1 2025.
Revenue from the group's leisure and hospitality businesses in the United Kingdom and Egypt was lower due to strengthening of the ringgit against pound sterling.
However, a lower Ebitda was recorded primarily due to higher operating and payroll related expenses in Q1 2025.
The leisure and hospitality businesses in the United States of America and Bahamas included the inancial results of Resorts World New York City (RWNYC), Resorts World Bimini (RW Bimini) and Resorts World Las Vegas (RWLV).
Revenue recorded by RWNYC was lower due to stronger ringgit against the US dollar.
RWLV's revenue and Ebitda were impacted by lower hold percentage and lower visitation compared with the record visitation benefited from NFL Super Bowl event in Q1 2024.
Hotel occupancy and average daily rate in Q12025 were 82.3 per cent and US$274 respectively compared with 89.1 per cent and US$298 in Q1 2024.
Genting said its performance for the remaining period of the 2025 financial year may be impacted by the global economic conditions and market volatility.
"In Malaysia, economic growth is expected to expand at a slower pace as heightened geopolitical tensions continue to weigh on both domestic and global sentiments.
"Despite ongoing global uncertainties, demand for international tourism is expected to remain resilient, although recovery is anticipated to be uneven across regions. Consequently, the regional gaming market may face increasing challenges," it added.
In Malaysia, the group remains focused on enhancing RWG's appeal as a regional tourism hub by introducing new facilities and attractions, including new ecotourism experiences at Genting Highlands.
"Celebrations to commemorate the Genting Group's 60th anniversary are underway, featuring a variety of special events, promotions and activities designed to engage visitors and enrich their experience at RWG," it added.

KUCHING, July 30 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) has built and upgraded a total of 39 Tamu Desa (Village Guest) premises across Sarawak over the past year, with a total allocation of RM7.85 million. Its minister, Datuk Ewon Benedick, said the project's implementation is being carried out in phases in collaboration with the local authorities (PBT) involved. "This is a project that was first introduced by KUSKOP to improve guest markets in Sabah and Sarawak, starting in 2024, and we will continue this project for this year. "For the project in Sarawak this year, we will discuss with the state government the implementation mechanism, taking into account the requests of several Sarawak Members of Parliament (MPs) who want stalls and tamu (markets) in rural areas to also be assisted," he told reporters after visiting the Tamu Sungai Apong premises here today. He said the implementation of the Tamu Desa premises development project is among KUSKOP's ongoing commitments in empowering the rural community's economy and encouraging the active participation of small entrepreneurs in the local economic system in Sabah and Sarawak. He said he has received four applications from Sarawak MPs who want the initiative to be expanded in the state. "I need to have a discussion first with Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan to select a suitable location for this project," he said. Meanwhile, Ewon said in a statement that for the Tamu Desa project in Sarawak, a total of 13 Tamu Desa projects have been implemented, costing RM1.99 million, and all of them involving Phase 1 have been fully completed. Phase 2 involves 26 projects with an allocation of RM5.85 million, and ongoing projects include Tamu Semarak and Tamu Sukma, which are expected to be completed next month (August).

FORMER UMNO supreme council member Isham Jalil has led a chorus of detractors to troll Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's out of the box notion that detractors who complained about high petrol prices in Malaysia should try to re-fuel in Singapore or for that matter even Thailand and Indonesia. For context, PMX who is also the Finance Minister had snubbed opposition leaders at Saturday's (July 26) Turun Anwar rally who criticised the proposed six sen RON95 price reduction to RM1.99/litre as being 'chicken feed' given such cut has to take into account implications to the nation's financial stability. 'First and foremost, Singapore has no oil companies. There are no oil wells either. That's why the price is expensive,' Isham who was expelled from UMNO on Dec 7, 2023 for opposing the party's collaborations with DAP in elections schooled PMX on his Facebook page. 'Secondly, while the petrol price in Singapore is four or five times that of our RON95, their per capita earnings is five to six times ours. If we adjust the per capita earnings with purchasing power parity, it is still three times higher than Malaysia. 'As their purchasing power is much higher than ours, it is most insensible of you to lash out at Malaysians by challenging them to buy petrol in Singapore.' Strive for change to the best of one's ability, Anwar reminds PKR members
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reminded Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) members to hold firmly to the call for islah mastata'tum, meaning to strive for change to the best of one's ability. Anwar, who is also PKR president, said this during a meeting with Federal Territories PKR members in Putrajaya today. "We may not be able to achieve everything in the blink of an eye, but we will continue to advance the reform agenda step by step," he said in a Facebook post. He said the Federal Territories have long stood as one of the strongholds of PKR's struggle, but the party's strength would only be meaningful if it continued to be grounded in core values and grassroots efforts. "Divisions must remain active through programmes that truly engage with the people, regardless of race, age or background," he said.
