AEP Ohio urges drivers to pay attention to help keep linemen safe
GROVEPORT, Ohio (WCMH) — April is Distracted Driving Awareness month and AEP Ohio is urging drivers to pay attention to keep both themselves and line workers safe.
Director of Operations, Matt Bennett, said power outages caused by vehicles are up from the previous year in Central Ohio. In 2023, there were 254; last year, there were 272.
'We have the same dangers as the public, right? Our first and foremost is going to be safety,' Bennett said.

At the lineman training facility in Groveport, workers are trained for all different types of outages, including those caused by vehicles.
'We have to treat all wires no matter if they're ours or somebody else's. If they're energized, anything that they're touching can also be energized,' Bennett said.
Ohio strengthened its distracted driving law in 2023, making it a primary offense to use or hold a mobile device while driving. However, Bennett said this problem is persisting for them. There were 900 vehicle-related power outages across the state. He blames a lot of that on distracted driving.
'Slow down. That's the biggest thing is we're always in a hurry. The world's moving fast, and pay attention to what you're doing,' he said.
Bennett said while they're aiming to bring these numbers down, they also want to keep the public safe when it does happen. AEP Ohio crews gave NBC4 a demonstration on what to do if you are involved in an accident with a utility pole.

'We want you to stay in the vehicle. That's the safest place for you,' said Craig Williams, Line Crew Supervisor at AEP Ohio.
He said it's best to wait for emergency responders to help you get out. However, if you feel like you're in danger Williams said there are ways to get out safely.
'Keep people away from the vehicle first and foremost,' he said.
The first step from Williams was to step to the very edge of the car and make sure you aren't still attached to the vehicle by something like a seatbelt. From there, you want to jump out of the vehicle with both feet at the same time. The last step is to shuffle your feet away from the vehicle.
'Don't panic. Call 911. 911 operators will be able to talk you through this and help you through this as well,' Bennett said.

Fugitive of the Week known to be in local area
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — The U.S. Marshals Fugitive of the Week has been wanted since 2020. Marshals are looking for Stashon Williams, 39, who is wanted on warrants from 2020 in the U.S. Northern District Court of Ohio on drug trafficking charges. Williams is known to have been in Cleveland, Warren and Youngstown. Williams was one of 11 people indicted in September 2020 for selling drugs in the Warren area. They were accused in a 92-count indictment of selling fentanyl and cocaine in Warren between March 2019 and February 2020. Members of the alleged ring used homes on Hamilton Avenue NW, Oriole Place, Austin Avenue, Kenilworth Avenue NE, Tod Avenue, Webb Court, Dover Avenue NW and Union Street to sell drugs. Williams faces charges of conspiracy to distribute cocaine, fentanyl and heroin, and three counts of use of a communications facility in furtherance of a drug crime. Ten of the 11 defendants have pleaded guilty and have been sentenced. Williams is described as 6 feet tall and 215 pounds. Driver leaves scene due to ‘childcare issues' after adult struck on I-670 exit ramp near Downtown, Columbus
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A person walking along Interstate 670 exit ramp was struck by an SUV, whose driver had to leave the scene due 'childcare issues', according to police. Officers and Columbus Fire Medic units arrived at the I-670 westbound ramp towards Interstate 71 South Sunday night at 11:15 p.m. and found an adult victim had been hit by a Toyota 4Runner. The driver and two passengers stopped briefly to check on the victim. Central Ohio bitten by price cycling bug at the gas pump The driver of the Toyota said they had childcare issues and had to leave. The passengers stayed behind and reported the crash to authorities. Police said the Toyota was located, with the driver's side mirror missing and damage to the vehicle that matched the damage found at the crash scene. Police did not say if there were any arrests made or charges filed against the driver. The victim was taken to an area hospital and listed in stable condition with a broken leg. Three people killed in crash on interstate in South Carolina, cops say
Three people were killed early Sunday morning in a crash on Interstate 85, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The three-vehicle collision happened at about 12:15 a.m. in Spartanburg County, said Master Trooper William Bennett. A 2015 Honda sedan was driving south in the northbound lanes of I-85, according to Bennett. At the 75 mile marker the Honda collided head-on with a 2019 Toyota sedan that was driving north on I-85, Bennett said. After that collision, the Honda then crashed into a 2024 Ford Expedition that was also heading north on the interstate, according to Bennett. The driver, who was the only person in the Honda, as well as both the driver and a passenger in the Toyota died at the scene, Bennett said. The Spartanburg County Coroner's Office has not publicly identified any of the victims. In addition to the Ford driver, there were five passengers in the SUV, but none of those occupants were hurt, according to Bennett. No other injuries were reported. There was no word if anyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt. Information about how the Honda came to be driving toward oncoming traffic on I-85 was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol. Through June 1, at least 316 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported. At least 38 people have died in Spartanburg County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 60 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported. That includes a fatal crash on Saturday afternoon. At about 1:50 p.m., both a 2007 Dodge Ram and a 2008 Yamaha motorcycle were driving north on S.C. 11, Bennett said. When the pickup truck turned left onto Cannon Ford Road it was hit on the driver's side by the motorcycle, according to Bennett. The motorcycle driver, who died at the scene, has not been publicly identified by the coroner's office. Bennett said the pickup driver, who was the only person in the truck, was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported. This crash also continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
