Backwardness only benchmark to decide OBC status, not religion: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) told the State Assembly that backwardness is the only benchmark to decide the OBC status of people.
Maintaining that a disinformation campaign is continuing on social media by some quarters, she asserted that there is no connection with religion in deciding the inclusion of any person in the OBC category.
Noting that the only benchmark for deciding OBC status in the State is backwardness, Ms. Banerjee said that a commission set up by the government is holding a survey on 50 new subsections for inclusion in that category.
The Chief Minister said that 49 subsections have been included under the OBC-A and 91 under OBC-B categories. She said that while more backward sections of people have been included under OBC-A, the less backward people come under OBC-B.
The Chief Minister addressed the House after laying the annual report of the West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes for the financial year 2024-25.
Ms. Banerjee said that all inclusions have been done after extensive field surveys and on the basis of recommendations by the Commission appointed for identification of such people.

CM inaugurates BBSR- Abu Dhabi direct flight services
Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated direct flight services to Abu Dhabi from Biju Patnaik International Airport here on Thursday. An IndiGo flight with 180 passengers on board started its journey to the capital of the United Arab Emirates from Bhubaneswar, Majhi said. Besides, 50 tonnes of mangoes produced in Odisha have also been sent to Abu Dhabi, he said. The inauguration took place on a day when the BJP government in the State was celebrating its first anniversary. The flight services were launched under Odisha's Building Management of Aviation Assets and Network (B-MAAN) initiative. The airline will operate flights on Abu Dhabi-Bhubaneswar route on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday every week, an official said. Speaking to mediapersons at the airport, Majhi said, 'Todayis a proud day for the State as the aspiration of the people of Odisha to have direct flight services to Abu Dhabi has been fulfilled.' Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and support from the Central government, the flight services to the capital of the United Arab Emirates have been launched as part of the State's new destination policy, he said. The Chief Minister said the flight services will create an opportunity for Odisha to directly connect with West Asian countries. It will help boost tourism, trade, investment and cultural exchange, he said. The flight services to Visakhapatnam were also restarted from Bhubaneswar on Thursday. 'Apart from infrastructure development, our government is taking steps for industrialisation and strengthening road, air and rail connectivity to enhance the State's GDP,' the Chief Minister said. To strengthen air connectivity, the BJP government has launched flight services to Dehradun, Ghaziabad, Goa, Indore, Kochi, Lucknow and Port Blair from Bhubaneswar and Hyderabad, Lucknow, Mumbai and Raipur from Jharsuguda, he pointed out. With the launch of flight services to major domestic and international destinations, Bhubaneswar is going to be a hub for the aviation sector in the coming days, Majhi added.

Thunderstorms are threatening President Donald Trump's big birthday celebration this weekend in Washington, D.C., where he's planning a $45 million military parade to mark both his 79th birthday and the Army's 250th anniversary. General Randy George, the Army's Chief of Staff, will reportedly have the final say on whether the show can go on. 'It's June in Washington DC. We get thunderstorms. Notably, the parade will showcase around 6,600 Army personnel, vintage warplanes like a WWII-era B-25 bomber and a P-1 fighter, as well as iconic Huey helicopters from the Vietnam War era.
