Jared Goff ranks high in Tier 2 in Mike Sando's QB Tiers list

USA Today3 days ago
After effectively feeling unwanted by the Los Angeles Rams, quarterback Jared Goff has felt more than welcome by the Detroit Lions since joining the team for the 2021 season.
Goff has steadily improved and re-energized his career, being a key component to the renaissance of the Lions. As a result, he is now being viewed among the better quarterbacks in the league. That can be seen thanks to Mike Sando's annual QB Tiers list at The Athletic.
Goff landed at No. 8 overall on the list and is among nine quarterbacks in Tier 2. Goff remained in Tier 2 from 2024 but moved up two spots from No. 10.
Of the 50 votes, 37 place Goff in Tier 2. Five placed him in Tier 1 — for reference, five quarterbacks were voted Tier 1 on this list: Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and, ironically enough, former Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford.
The following was a quote provided by Sando from a defensive coordinator on Goff's improvement since joining the Lions:
'He has definitely grown over the last couple years. Early in his career, if you got him to be just a dropback quarterback, he would make a lot more mistakes. He is better in that area as far as protecting the football. He has a good run game, they have a good team. I'm not going to hold that against him too much.'
After the 2021 trade, many wondered if Goff would reach such a high level in the NFL. But the trust the Lions organization has had in Goff going into this fifth season in the Motor City has paid huge dividends, including back-to-back NFC North titles and an appearance in the NFC Championship Game. 2025 is all about making it to San Francisco and Super Bowl 60.

Kellen Moore mum on timeline for naming Saints starting QB: 'We'll see'

New Orleans Saints coach Kellen Moore doesn't yet appear ready to pick the winner of the team's quarterback competition. Moore was asked following New Orleans' 17-all tie with the Jacksonville Jaguars whether he planned to announce the team's Week 1 starter ahead of preseason Week 3. His response? "We'll see," Moore replied. "Obviously, I got first sight here, but film will be an important aspect of this thing, and we'll just see how everything progresses leading into this week." The Saints currently have three quarterbacks on their roster: Spencer Rattler, Tyler Shough and Jake Haener. Moore has spoken well of all three throughout the offseason and praised them after Sunday's game. "All these QBs aren't making this easy," Moore said of New Orleans' quarterback battle. "They're all doing a really good job and they're all having their days and they're taking advantage of their opportunities. So, you know, it's an evaluation and we'll take it where it needs to go." 2025 NFL RECORD PROJECTIONS: Who wins Super Bowl 60? (Hint: not the Eagles) That said, the Saints appear to be choosing between Rattler and Shough two for the starting job. Haener was the third quarterback off the bench in the team's preseason opener before failing to play against the Jaguars. Shough outperformed Rattler in preseason Week 1, completing 15 of 22 passes for 165 yards, one touchdown and one interception in New Orleans' 27-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The tables turned against the Jaguars, when Rattler completed 18 of 24 passes for 199 yards, one touchdown and one interception while throwing the game-tying touchdown to Dante Pettis with 20 seconds left in regulation. As such, Moore has not yet made up his mind about who will start in Week 1. Still, he told reporters he doesn't necessarily view that as a bad thing. "Sooner is always better, but these guys are competing and they're giving us everything that we can ask," Moore said of the Saints' quarterback competition. "So, we'll continue to evaluate." Lions' moment to trade for Trey Hendrickson has arrived

Lions' moment to trade for Trey Hendrickson has arrived originally appeared on The Sporting News The Detroit Lions have been at the center of the speculation all offseason, not really by their own choosing. But everyone looks at the Super Bowl contender, sees they might be a pass-rusher short and connects that to disgruntled Cincinnati Bengals superstar Trey Hendrickson. And now, if the Lions really would have any interest in Hendrickson, they have to pursue it. The Bengals might actually trade Hendrickson after all. He's made it clear that he won't play for the $16 million he's due to make in 2025, and so a trade might be the resolution to the conflict if a new deal isn't reached. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, "the Bengals are listening to trade offers" for Hendrickson. MORE: Shedeur Sanders shows his NFL Draft slide might've been a mistake "It's unclear if the NFL sack leader will be playing elsewhere in 2025, and a trade will be a real challenge," Rapoport adds. "But time will tell." Hendrickson is one of the best defensive players in the NFL. He has 17.5 sacks in each of the past two seasons. The Lions have Aidan Hutchinson coming at quarterbacks from one side of the defense. It'd certainly look quite imposing to have Hendrickson flying in from the other side. MORE: Rams' Jimmy Garoppolo decision tells us everything about Matthew Stafford's injury Nothing is a given here. The Bengals' phones will surely be busy, and whatever team acquires Hendrickson will then likely be looking at giving him the big contract he feels he deserves. But the Lions have been everyone's favorite Hendrickson landing spot for a long time. If Detroit really wants in, now's the time to make it happen.
