Three Manchester United players leave club after final game of season

Metro25-05-2025

Manchester United announced the departure of three first-team players after the final game of the season.
Ruben Amorim's side concluded a miserable campaign by beating Aston Villa 2-0 at Old Trafford.
Villa, who missed out on Champions League qualification, went down to ten men when Emiliano Martinez was sent off for bringing down Rasmus Hojlund as he raced through on goal.
The hosts made their numerical advantage count in the second half, sealing a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Amad Diallo and Christian Eriksen.
Immediately after the victory, Manchester United confirmed Eriksen as one of three first-team players who would be leaving the club this summer along with Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans.

Eriksen, 33, made 107 appearances for the Red Devils since joining on a free transfer in 2022.
Evans returned to Old Trafford for a second spell in 2023 and played over 200 games for the club across his two stints in Manchester.
Lindelof, meanwhile, departs as one of Manchester United's longest-serving players, having arrived at the club back in 2017.
'Manchester United have confirmed that Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans and Christian Eriksen will leave the club at the end of the season,' a statement read.
'The departure of the experienced trio was confirmed following United's final game of the season on Sunday, as we beat Aston Villa 2-0 at Old Trafford, with Eriksen scoring the second goal from the penalty spot.
'Lindelof, who made the most appearances for the club out of the three, has represented United 284 times, since his arrival from Benfica in the summer of 2017, and won Emirates FA Cup and League Cup winners' medals during his time here, lifting both trophies in the preceding two campaigns. 'Evans has served United with distinction for more than a decade as a senior player, across two spells at the club.
'While Eriksen's spell at Old Trafford has lasted only three years by comparison, the Dane's impact has been strongly felt in M16 during that time.
'Everybody at United thanks Victor, Jonny and Christian for their contributions during their time at Old Trafford, and wishes them the best of luck for the future.'

Lamine Yamal disagrees with Trent Alexander-Arnold after Jamie Carragher blast

Lamine Yamal's words will be music to the ears of Barcelona and Spain supporters - and they are in contrast to those of Trent Alexander-Arnold in the past concerning the Ballon d'Or Barcelona and Spain superstar Lamine Yamal is not yet concerning himself with the prospect of winning the Ballon d'Or as he attempts to lead his national team to more success. The teenager is in Germany for the semi-finals of the Nations League as Spain look to add another title to the Euro 2024 victory they record last year. Luis de la Fuente will have to lead his team past France, and a contender for the label of best player in the world in Ousmane Dembele, before potentially facing off against Germany or Portugal in the final. And the Spanish boss will be pleased his young starlet's aspirations are centred on team trophies rather than individual accolades. ‌ The 17-year-old racked up 18 goals and 25 assists in 55 appearances as Barcelona won La Liga and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. And Yamal is already thinking about winning the latter competition and the World Cup next year. ‌ "I don't think about the Ballon d'Or; I think you'll end up badly if you only think about that," he said. "I think about winning. "Imagine if I win the World Cup and the UCL next year, then the Ballon d'Or will come by itself. But the most important thing is to enjoy football." Asked about a potential battle between himself and Paris Saint-Germain ace Dembele, Yamal refused to add too much fuel to the hype behind their meeting. "I am confident that we [Spain] will win on Thursday, but whether we win or not, I would still vote for the best player in the world,' Yamal told COPE. "If Thursday doesn't go the way I want or Dembele wants, then what? You're voting for someone else who plays on Sunday? "I'm the kind of person who votes for the best player over the whole year. But if people want to risk it all on one game, well… we can play that game then." ‌ Yamal's approach to the Ballon d'Or is somewhat in contrast to that of a new La Liga rival. Trent Alexander-Arnold joined Barcelona rivals Real Madrid at the start of the window, and has previously suggested he'd like to win the accolade over earning Champions League glory. It is a moment that irked some Liverpool supporters and club legend Jamie Carragher. The former defender said on Sky Sports: "Trent was asked whether he'd want to win the Champions League or the Ballon D'or and he said Ballon D'Or – even if he thinks that, it's not the right answer for a local player at Liverpool. "The club has to come first. That showed Liverpool supporters he's not a player who thinks about the club more than himself. He's a brand. He's an amazing footballer and that's why Real Madrid want him."

Facing Rangers at Ibrox was the craziest experience of my career and I've won the World Cup AND the Champions League

One former star was blown away by Ibrox during a Champions League clash way back in 2007 It's not uncommon for top players from around the continent to rave about the atmosphere generated at Ibrox or Celtic Park. But one World Cup winner has described facing Rangers in their own backyard as the 'craziest experience' of his whole career. ‌ Former midfield dynamo Sami Khedira had only recently cemented himself as a regular fixture for Stuttgart when the Bundesliga side travelled to Govan in September 2007 for the opening round of fixtures in the Champions League group stage. ‌ The future Real Madrid and Juventus superstar played the first 77 minutes as his team fell to a 2-1 defeat, despite goal machine Mario Gomez giving them an early second half lead before Walter Smith's Gers hit back with a double courtesy of strikes from Charlie Adam and Jean-Claude Darcheville. Khedira went onto form a key cog in the Germany team under Joachim Low that lifted the World Cup in Brazil in 2014 but insists the amazing experience he witnessed in that game has stuck with him. In an interview with TikTok star Fiago, the 77-time Germany cap was asked about the best atmosphere he had ever played in and replied: "For me the most craziest experience ever was my first Champions League match. We played Glasgow Rangers and it was such an amazing experience." And that view was unequivocally shared by Stuttgart and Germany teammate and future Bayern Munich striker Gomez, who was also blown away by what Ibrox had to offer: "That's a difficult one. "I would say the Scottish fans like Celtic but to me I played against the Rangers and I will never forget this. They've been really strong." ‌ Despite getting off to a winning start in the Champions League that season, Gers bowed out of the group stage after three consecutive defeats in their return clashes against Stuttgart, Barcelona and Lyon. However, avoiding a fourth place finish in the group saw the Light Blues remain in Europe after Christmas by dropping into the UEFA Cup. Smith's side pulled off fine triumphs against Panathinaikos, Werder Bremen, Sporting Lisbon and Fiorentina over two legs before losing out to Zenit St Petersburg in the final in Manchester. Marcus Rashford a shock transfer target for Inter Milan as Man Utd outcast desperately looks for next club

MARCUS RASHFORD has emerged as a target for Inter Milan - as they look to bounce back from their Champions League final horror show. The Manchester United forward, 27, spent the second half of the season on loan at Aston Villa, with his red-hot form securing him a place back in the England squad. 2 2 But Villa, who narrowly missed out on a Champions League spot for 2025-26, are unlikely to make a permanent move for Rashford due to the player's sky-high wages. Unai Emery and Co are now firmly focused on other targets and hope to keep hold of Ollie Watkins, who has been linked with an exit from Villa Park. Sources close to Rashford told SunSport he doesn't see a future at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim. The pair reportedly fell out last season with the Portuguese manager unhappy with Rashford's attitude during training and off the field. And that means Rashford is frantically searching for a new club, which has put Inter Milan on red-alert. The Italian giants are looking to rebuild their side in the wake of the Champions League final demolition at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain. Inter were thrashed 5-0 in a defeat which came on the back of them throwing away the Serie A title late in the season, opening the door for Napoli. Club chiefs believe that Rashford could be a key acquisition and would excite supporters. And although Man Utd would prefer a permanent deal, Inter are also exploring the option of a long-term loan move. A source said: 'Marcus is open-minded to a move abroad, and a fresh start. Aston Villa star Marcus Rashford hits the race track as he works out on holiday in St Tropez "Lots of players have made the move from the Premier League to Serie A in recent years and performed very well. That's why the idea of such a switch excites both the player and Inter.' Rashford is one of a number of players in limbo at United. Team-mates Jadon Sancho and Antony both ended the campaign on loan at other clubs and are deemed surplus to requirements. But United face a challenge in offloading all of them due to their massive wages.
