At least nine dead, multiple injured in Vancouver after car drives through Filipino festival
At least nine people were killed and many were injured after a man drove into a crowd at the Filipino heritage festival in Vancouver, police said early Sunday morning.
According to Vancouver police, a man drove into a large crowd of people gathered for the Lapu Lapu Day festival around 8:14 p.m. Police confirmed the nine deaths and several injuries after the incident.
The suspect, a 30-year-old Vancouver man, was arrested at the scene and has been taken into custody.
Vancouver authorities said they were investigating the case, but 'at this time' they did not believe it to be an act of terrorism.
Interim Vancouver Police Chief Steve Rai said at a press conference that a man was arrested after he was initially apprehended by bystanders, The Associated Press reported.
During the press conference, Rai said it was believed the man was acting alone and he is someone who was 'known to police in certain circumstances,' the news service reported.
Multiple videos posted online appear to show victims and debris strewn on a long stretch of road, with several people lying on the ground of the South Vancouver neighborhood. The vehicle driven by the man, a black SUV, had a crumpled front.
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim said in a post on X that he was shocked and deeply saddened by the incident.
'We will work to provide more information as soon as we can, but at this time @VancouverPD have confirmed there are a number of fatalities and multiple injuries,' Sim said. 'Our thoughts are will all those affected and with Vancouver's Filipino community during this time.'
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also said he was devastated to hear the news and said he was monitoring the situation closely.
'I offer my deepest condolences to the loved ones of those killed and injured, to the Filipino Canadian community, and to everyone in Vancouver,' Carney said online. 'We are all mourning with you.'
The celebration was in honor of Datu Lapu-Lapuannd Indigenous chieftain who stood up to Spanish explorers in the 16th century in the face of colonization.
Vancouver, which is part of the British Columbia province, has recognized the celebration since 2023 in honor of the large Filipino immigrant community in the area.

Man charged with assault for allegedly attacking and strangling neighbor

MURRAY, Utah () — A Murray man has been charged with assault after banging on his neighbor's door and allegedly physically attacking him when he came outside. Bryan M Barrios, 31, was charged with felony aggravated assault, misdemeanor assault, threat of violence, property damage, and public intoxication. On May 21, 2025, just before 9 p.m., a Murray City police officer was called to a disturbance near Regal Street in Murray. When the officer arrived, a group of people were standing outside and pointed out a man they said had attacked them. Two inmates charged for allegedly stabbing 'rival gang member' at Utah State Prison One person, the victim, was bleeding from several injuries and had a red mark and abrasion on his neck, according to the officer's arrest statement. The victim told the officer that his neighbor, Barrios, had begun banging on his door loudly, damaging the doorframe from the impact. When the victim opened the door to speak with him, documents say Barrios began yelling at him and physically attacked him. The victim recalled Barrios saying, 'I'm going to f– kill you!' and wrapping his arm around his neck to strangle him. According to documents, surveillance footage of the altercation showed Barrios attempting to strangle the victim, causing him to fall to the ground. Barrios then made a second attempt to strangle him, but the victim managed to pin Barrios' arms to his chest and stop the physical attack. The officer who apprehended Barrios reported that he smelled of alcohol and appeared to be intoxicated. Barrios was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail and was charged by the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office on June 6. WA's Travis Decker searched ‘how to move to Canada' days before murders
The Brief Travis Caleb Decker, wanted for a triple homicide in Chelan County, Washington, conducted Google searches about relocating to Canada days before his 3 girls were found murdered. Authorities found searches such as "how does a person move to Canada" and "jobs Canada" in Decker's Google account. Decker remains at large, and the U.S. Marshals Service is seeking public assistance in locating him. Call 911 if you see him. Authorities are investigating whether Travis Decker, wanted in connection with a triple homicide in Chelan County, Washington, may be attempting to flee to Canada based on recent Google searches found in his account. What we know A deputy U.S. Marshal with the Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force, revealed in a US Marshals Service affidavit that Decker's Google account included searches such as "how does a person move to Canada," "how to relocate to Canada," and "jobs Canada." These searches were conducted on May 26, shortly before Decker allegedly kidnapped and murdered his three children, Olivia, 5, Evelyn, 8, and Paityn, 9. Decker's children were found dead on U.S. Forest Service land near Leavenworth on June 2. His vehicle was found at the scene, but Decker remains at large. US Marshals are concerned that Decker may be attempting to cross the border into Canada. "The location of the victim's remains is relatively close to the Canadian border and approximately 11 miles from the Pacific Crest Trail, a well-established trail that leads directly Canada," the affidavit read. The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) is a challenging 2,650-mile hiking and equestrian trail spanning from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon and Washington, primarily following the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges. The trail offers scenic diversity, from deserts to glaciated peaks, and is designated as a National Scenic Trail for its natural, historic and cultural significance. The most important aspect of the PCT lies in its ability to connect individuals with the beauty and demanding wilderness of the Western United States, whether experienced through a full thru-hike or shorter section adventures. Dig deeper Decker, a former military member, possesses skills in navigation and survival, which could aid him in evading capture. The arrest warrant for Decker signed on June 3, accuses him of three counts of aggravated murder in the first degree and three counts of kidnapping in the first degree. The warrant is nationwide and stipulates "no bail until first appearance." The charges against Decker are serious felonies that carry significant prison sentences if convicted. The U.S. Marshals Service is seeking public assistance in locating Decker, whose current whereabouts are unknown. The affidavit says there is probable cause to believe Decker committed unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. Anyone with information is urged to contact law enforcement immediately. Authorities told residents in remote areas of Chelan, Okanogan, King, Snohomish and Kittitas counties to be vigilant, lock doors to their cabins or outbuildings, leave their window shades open and turn on outdoor lights.
