Three ways CFOs can drive value for the business
The role of CFO has grown exponentially in recent years. While traditional CFO roles may have focused on being the gatekeeper and scorekeeper, the exponential CFO helps set the vision, advises on strategy and steers execution. If one part of this growing role stands out from the rest, it is enterprise value creation.
Creating value isn't straightforward. With investors, partners, employees, customers and other stakeholders all placing their own demands on a business, making decisions to drive enterprise value involves deftly managing trade-offs and tensions across a broad range of risks and rewards.
That's why the risk-balanced, capital-informed perspective that CFOs can bring is crucial for pushing through uncertainty and paralysis to unlock the most optimum path forward. But what does this path actually look like?
Deloitte's recent The CFO Value as a Value Driver report suggests the top value levers for CFOs include managing cash and capital, shaping the cost curve, and accelerating growth. Independently valuable, these three priorities can also reinforce one another in a dynamic interplay that boosts value creation.
Accelerate Growth
When it comes to increasing the pace of growth, simply going 'bigger' isn't the whole answer. It requires a careful assessment of the organisation's priorities, willingness to absorb costs, and go-to-market practices, alongside a clear view on where the growth opportunities exist.
Those opportunities can come in different forms. Business model transformations, for example, can boost efficiency and resiliency while capitalising on product or market synergies. Channel optimisation can help develop a more loyal customer base by creating better interactions and richer experiences.

Entering new markets can be risky, but the risk can be minimised through a joint venture — particularly if the JV links previously unlinked sectors, meaning the potential for growth is high. Meanwhile, product diversification can not only help grow the top line, but also insulate against downturns or losses in existing lines.
No matter what path is taken, all growth opportunities have flow-on effects on the other two value levers: growth changes the cost base and can free up or tie up capital. CFOs need to be able to see all sides of the equation and keep things in balance to achieve the best outcome.
Shape the Cost Curve
One practical example of this is the way a CFO approaches cost cutting. It's common for CFOs to be instructed by their CEO to focus on managing and reducing cost, but the way that's done can have consequences on capital flexibility.
As part of a value creation agenda, some CFOS may need to shift their thinking from 'taking costs out' to 'keeping costs out'. Rather than making sporadic cuts in the moment, the organisation should tighten up visibility, supplier terms and technology commitments to pursue sustainable, structural change.
However, making diligent and structural cost reductions brings its own challenges. When it's clear on the page that different operational areas need to be trimmed differently, it may feel 'unfair' to some around the table.
Stature and buy-in are needed to make those decisions with authority. A CFO who establishes and manages expectations while using leadership and communication to embed them across the enterprise can instil permanent discipline that may even last longer than their tenure at the company.
Manage Cash and Capital
The connection between costs, growth, and capital is clear: it's the deployment of capital that fuels growth. But the resources you have are only as valuable as the uses you put them to.
Every line-of-business leader in an organisation wants more capital investment to grow, and each one can usually argue a good case in their favour. CFOs need the ability to weigh a limited capital pool against unlimited demand to assess where returns will likely be the greatest.
CFOs should develop a value-centred rational framework aligned with enterprise strategy-guided investment decisions over a one-off, in the moment approach. Long-term aims should be balanced with short-term objectives using a 'portfolio-like' approach that groups investments to match priorities.
This can help CFOs detach capital decisions from the annual treadmill, making capital investment a focus of constant attention and decision-making rather than a big yearly number that no one can question or change.
This approach can also improve communication to capital markets and investors by providing them with more granular detail in forward-looking guidance about investment and return on equity.
Another option is to allocate investment in accordance with strategic goals, one at a time. Doing things across the board may be simple to administer, but also may overlook areas of growing or diminishing need.
By recognising and managing the interplay between accelerating growth, shaping the cost curve, and managing cash and capital, CFOs will play a crucial role in driving value at their organisations. But although CFOs are expected to do more and more in this area, it's not something they can do alone.
CFOs will need the buy-in and collaboration of the C-suite, the finance function, and the broader business to succeed. This means establishing themselves as trusted leaders with strong people management skills and a compelling vision for where they want to help take the company, and how.

Premier League 'under strain' despite record £6.3 bn revenues
The combined revenue of Premier League clubs rose to a record £6.3 billion ($8.5 billion, 7.5 billion euros) in the 2023/24 season, but fan unrest and worsening competitive balance are cause for concern, according to financial experts Deloitte. The rise in income for England's 20 top-flight clubs was fuelled by commercial income surpassing £2 billion for the first time and a rise in matchday revenue beyond £900 million. English clubs continue to enjoy a huge financial advantage over their European rivals. Spain's La Liga, the second highest revenue-generating league, earned just over half that amount at 3.8 billion euros, almost 50 percent of which came from Real Madrid and Barcelona. However, fan protests have become a common sight at Premier League stadiums over rising ticket prices and the squeezing out of local supporters to make way for more tourists willing to spend more for a special matchday experience. "There can be no doubt that the system in English football is under strain," said Tim Bridge, the lead partner in the Deloitte Sports Business Group. "Repeated reports of fan unrest at ticket price and accessibility demonstrate the challenge in the modern era of balancing commercial growth with the historic essence of a football club's role and position in society: as a community asset." There is also uncertainty over the implications of an incoming independent regulator for England's top five leagues. And for the past two seasons, all three promoted clubs from the Championship have been immediately relegated back to the second tier. "The financial implications of the 'yo-yo effect' on clubs, their spending, and overall competitiveness are major factors to address in order to continue attracting high levels of investment across the system," added Bridge in Deloitte's Annual Review of Football Finance. Total revenue of European clubs rose by eight percent in the 2023/24 campaign to 38 billion euros, boosted by increased commercial revenue and stadium developments. The women's game also continues to grow commercially, particularly in England's Women's Super League (WSL). Collective revenues in the WSL rose 34 percent to £65 million in 2023/24 and are projected to reach £100 million in the upcoming season.

Triumvirate of senior executives is the key to succeeding with AI
ROI is the goal for most organisations today as they work to conceive and execute a bold AI vision, but measurable value can be elusive. Whether owing to greater than expected costs, weaker than desired capabilities, or unanticipated risks, demonstrable results aren't guaranteed. Take generative AI, for example: a recent Deloitte survey revealed that more than 40 per cent of organisations struggled to define and measure the impact of their generative AI efforts. Leadership drives the pursuit of AI value, and many enterprises may benefit by taking a fresh look at which executives are playing a central part. A triumvirate of three executive roles tends to carry the banner for AI ROI: the CIO, the CFO, and the chief strategy officer (CSO). Defining what these executives own and how they work together can help pave a smoother path from AI dreams to concrete business outcomes. Leaders for the AI Journey The triumvirate of executive leaders is at the centre of AI collaboration and strategic decision-making. Each has distinct responsibilities and priorities. CFO: the capital allocator. The CFO has the final say in capital deployment and prioritisation and views technology programs through the lens of cost and return. Budgets, forecasts, and quantifiable outcomes are where the innovative rubber meets the road. The CFO is concerned with whether an AI use case can deliver more business value than it costs, as well as whether risks could imperil the desired value. To support and measure ROI, they use performance metrics and AI-specific profit and loss statements, as well as allocate budgets for AI investments and mitigate financial risks associated with them. CFOs are accountable for formalising and communicating economic value and results, so their focus is on monitoring how AI programs affect strategic targets such as key performance indicators and earnings per share. Importantly, decisions are made in conjunction with line-of-business leaders, including collaborating with IT leadership on vendor relationships and contract negotiations. Ultimately, the CFO's financial oversight and guidance helps ensure that investments are strategically aligned and deliver measurable value; if AI outcomes do not affect P&L statements, the programs may be coming up short. The CIO is the CSO's co-conspirator in pursuing value. CSO: the convener with a vision. The CSO owns the value narrative and facilitates fact-based strategy at the enterprise level. This executive's purview includes activities such as aligning stakeholders on use cases and applications, setting quantitative targets, sensing the ecosystem for partners and M&A targets, and helping the organisation track and measure success. CSOs can push a bold AI vision and, while they are not a proxy for AI expertise, should understand AI as a mechanism for enabling the commercial strategy. CSOs increasingly hold a scorekeeper function, ensuring strategy is executed through the leadership team's activities. If there is not an enterprise-level conversation happening around AI, the CSO should prompt the discussion. There is reason to think CSOs could be playing a larger role in AI strategy; a Deloitte survey found 54 per cent of CSOs play only a supporting role in shaping AI strategy, and 31 per cent reported having no role in the enterprise ecosystem strategy at all. Ultimately, the vision for value and technology trust is established by people, and the CSO plays a vital part. CIO: the technology catalyst. CIOs are the bridge between technology capabilities and business value, and they are positioned to bring forward opportunities that can make the enterprise strategy real. The CIO is the CSO's co-conspirator in pursuing value. The technology executive is responsible for execution and implementation and leads the hard work of making AI use cases deliver impact at scale, including by developing the technology infrastructure and governance frameworks, managing vendor relationships, and evaluating emerging technologies. Yet the CIO needs to consider not just technology capabilities but how technology choices support the AI vision codified in enterprise strategy. There may be room for CIOs to take a broader view of their role in driving strategy. A 2024 Deloitte survey found only 35 per cent of CIOs ranked embracing the potential of AI and analytics as their first priority. The CIO's role could include overseeing AI integration and risk management, fostering a data-driven culture, upskilling the workforce, and measuring AI's effect on business outcomes. Strategic Collaboration in the AI Era The C-suite triumvirate lays the foundation for AI ROI and charts the path towards capturing it. In AI, as with other technologies, the numerator of ROI is the expected value; this is owned by the business units that use the deployed AI to generate value, be it via efficiency, productivity, or other metrics. The denominator of ROI, meanwhile, is the cost to achieve the expected value. With this insight, the question becomes, what can the triumvirate do to strengthen the collaborative endeavour and show up accordingly? Regular, collaborative engagements are where leaders can gain insight into competing priorities and potential risks. They are also an opportunity to identify where other leaders should join the AI deliberations. For example, at what point should the chief legal officer be included to raise priorities around compliance and technology trust? Additionally, companies should recognise that competitive advantage from AI is not just operational excellence. AI at scale can play a role in different parts of the value chain. The triumvirate should think holistically about how to scale AI, including workforce needs, process changes, and technology orchestration. AI programs thrive (or falter) based on true understanding in the decision-making process and a continual focus on commercial value. In this, the triumvirate of AI ROI can and should be at the forefront. What these three job market trends mean for employers
From the outside looking in, Australia's labour market looks robust: inflation is easing, wages align with expectations, and falling interest rates are boosting jobs amid already low unemployment. The numbers support this — over the past year, 389,800 people found employment, with roughly two-thirds of those jobs being full-time. The unemployment rate stands at 4.1 per cent, well below the historical average, representing one of the smallest unemployment increases following a major disinflation period in Australia's history. Underemployment has also declined since late 2023. However, these headline figures obscure some of the more complicated dynamics at play in the labour market and their implications for employers, which we have explored in Deloitte Access Economics' most recent edition of Employment Forecasts. Public Sector Leads Job Growth; White-Collar Expansion Slows Australia's economy is set to strengthen in 2025, supporting labour demand. However, some continuing economic challenges and global uncertainties mean many private sector firms remain cautious about expanding their workforce, instead focusing on maximising existing staff. Consequently, non-market employment — which means public sector jobs and roles in health, education, and social assistance — will continue to drive most job growth. In the year to December 2024, this sector accounted for about 80 per cent of employment gains. Overall employment growth is forecast to ease from 2.7 per cent (375,300 workers) in 2023-24 to 2.3 per cent (324,600 workers) in 2024-25, then slow further to 1.5 per cent (218,800 workers) in 2025-26, influenced by reduced public spending and lower net migration. David Rumbens is Partner, Deloitte Access Economics Of this, market sector jobs are expected to grow by just 1.2 per cent (113,700 workers) in 2024-25 and 0.8 per cent (84,400 workers) in 2025-26. In contrast, non-market sector employment is expected to rise 4.9 per cent (210,900 workers) in 2024-25 and 3 per cent (143,400 workers) in 2025-26. White-collar employment growth is projected at a modest 0.9 per cent — or just 48,600 workers — in 2024-25, the slowest since the pandemic slowdown of 2019-20. By contrast, blue-collar job growth is expected to ease to 1.7 per cent in 2024-25 and 0.3 per cent in 2025-26. Despite a focus on residential construction, capacity limits will restrict growth in construction employment. The human services sector stands out, with workforce growth expected at 4.1 per cent in 2024-25 and 2.7 per cent in 2025-26, significantly above the overall workforce average. Remote Work is Here to Stay The tug-of-war between employers and employees over working arrangements appears to have settled. Research from the Australian HR Institute (AHRI) shows that the share of employers requiring office returns has remained steady between 2023 and 2025. About 80 per cent of Australian HR professionals expect hybrid working arrangements to stay the same or increase over the next two years. Moreover, businesses with no office attendance mandate rose from 25 per cent to 28 per cent over this period. Hybrid work is now firmly embedded in Australia's labour market — roughly 40 per cent of employed Australians worked remotely late last year, well above pre-pandemic levels of 20-30 per cent (1989-2019). This isn't too surprising — Australian workers clearly prefer hybrid or flexible work. The ABS Working Arrangements report finds around 88 per cent of workers want to work from home at least partly, with 60 per cent favouring hybrid setups. Financially, an average Australian worker can save about $5300 annually on transport costs by working from home full-time, according to the Grattan Institute, who also highlight that flexible work supports participation among older Australians, people with disabilities, and carers, broadening the labour pool. While employee preference for flexible work is clear, its impact on productivity is less certain. Research by Professor Nick Bloom at Stanford University suggests hybrid arrangements boost profitability by reducing turnover without harming productivity. About three days in the office per week appear sufficient for mentoring and collaboration. For employers, flexible work will remain a key feature of the labour market. Balancing business goals with employee flexibility will be crucial going forward. Productivity Challenges and AI Opportunities With unemployment remaining relatively low and wages growing in real terms, it is clear that Australia's current labour market issues mainly concern low productivity growth — with clear implications for employers. Since peaking in March 2022, labour productivity has fallen 5.7 per cent, with productivity in the non-market sector near a 20-year low. Without improvement, this risks further damage to business performance and living standards. Improving productivity is, therefore, critical for governments and employers alike. One promising solution is the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in workplaces. AI's impact will vary across industries and roles. Deloitte's recently launched Work Analyser tool assesses AI's potential to streamline tasks and has been integrated into Employment Forecasts projections. AI-driven labour savings will likely alter how many tasks are performed, improving efficiency and often allowing higher-quality work, making certain roles more attractive. To stay competitive, employers who haven't developed an AI strategy should consider how the technology may change the way various roles at their organisation will be performed, whether that may require a chance to workforce composition, and how to use the efficiency gains generated.
