Mercedes driver high on laughing gas jailed for killing pensioner
A driver who inhaled laughing gas and killed a woman while speeding in a Mercedes has been jailed for five years.
Washe Manyatelo, 24, struck Annette Dixon, 70, in August 2023 while she was crossing the road with her walking frame in Edinburgh.
Manyatelo had been at a party the night before, had not slept and told friends he 'felt fine to drive'. He admitted causing her death by dangerous driving.
Sentencing him at the High Court in Edinburgh, judge Lady Ross said: 'That arrogant self-assessment of your condition was woefully wrong.'
She added: 'This was a lady in her later years who was much loved by her family. They were close to her and she is missed terribly.'
Car would have failed MOT
Lady Ross pointed out the car was borrowed and had dangerous defects that meant it would have failed an MOT test.
The court heard Manyatelo was driving at excessive speed in a 20mph zone on Stevenson Drive near Saughton Park after inhaling nitrous oxide.
He had driven onto the opposing carriageway, mounted a pavement and grass verge, then went back onto the road when he struck Mrs Dixon, who had just exited a bus.
Manyatelo fell asleep in a police car following the incident and refused to provide a blood sample for testing, claiming that it was against his religion.
Prosecutor John Keenan KC said: 'He did not swerve, break or take any other action to avoid striking Mrs Dixon. The speed on impact was between 26 and 35mph.
'The impact caused her to be projected around 4.5 metres further up the westbound lane.'
Manyatelo did not slow down or stop after the collision, but drove on before returning to the crash scene.
Members of the public, including an off duty nurse, went to Mrs Dixon's aid.
She was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary but died from her injuries.
'Extremely immature'
Manyatelo gave negative tests for alcohol, cannabis and cocaine. But officers who were dealing with him noticed that he appeared drowsy and sometimes looked at them with a glazed expression.
He agreed to be examined by a doctor who expressed the opinion that he was impaired and that his condition may be due to drug consumption.
Officers found four deflated balloons in his car along with a nitrous oxide canister.
Defence advocate Iain McSporran KC told judge Lady Ross that his client was sorry for his actions.
He said Manyatelo was an 'extremely immature' man who had came to appreciate the seriousness off his actions.

Glasgow man caught with £1m of cocaine in secret hideaway
Michael O'Lone was stopped on the M74 near junction 10 at Lesmahagow, in Lanarkshire, in April 2024. The 34-year-old had previously been freed from a jail-term for growing cannabis when he was snared again. O'Lone has now been locked up once more after he pleaded guilty at the High Court in Glasgow to a charge of being concerned in the supply of cocaine. Prosecutor Eilidh Robertson told how O'Lone was the only person in the van when it was halted. She then explained: "The vehicle was searched. A total of 10 blocks of powder in bags were recovered from a compartment under the driver's seat which could be operated with hydraulics." A sensor button to open the hideaway was seized. O'Lone's DNA was also found in that area of the van. Police further discovered an iPhone - messages linked O'Lone to the drug trafficking including him discussing the collection of "paper" - slang for money - with an associate. There was also a photo of white powder being weighed on scales. Miss Roberston said the cocaine had a purity as high as 82% with a potential street value of £1,004,000. Thomas Ross KC, defending, stated O'Lone, of the city's Castlemilk, was released from his last sentence in July 2022. He had been jailed for 14 months for being involved in the production of cannabis. Mr Ross: "As far as this (latest) offence is concerned, there is very little to offer other than the value of the cocaine is high, but he would not have benefitted directly from the sale of drugs." O'Lone had got involved to help repay a debt owed by him. The KC stated he was a man "capable of very much better". Lord Cubie cut the jail-term from eight years due to the plea. The judge said O'Lone "knew fine well" what he was getting involved in, stating drugs "corrode, damage and destroy" lives. Referring to O'Lone previous prison stint, Lord Cube told him: "You had your second chance and chose to deal with it with this most serious offending."

Man from Newton Mearns raped woman and fractured her skull
Christopher McDonald repeatedly tormented his victim leaving her traumatised by her ordeal. The attacks included the 45 year-old raping her and also fracturing her skull when he discovered she was in a new relationship. The woman was known to McDonald. The crimes mainly occurred in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire. The first offender had denied the accusations during a trial at the High Court in Glasgow. But, jurors found him guilty of a total of three charges. READ MORE: Thug knocked out three of teen's teeth with one punch He was convicted of engaging in a course of abusive behaviour which included violently having sex with the woman "without her consent" in August 2022 and punching her on the face the same day. The other charges were two counts of acting in a threatening manner. Describing the most serious incidents, Judge Douglas Brown today told McDonald: "In the early hours, you awoke her from her sleep and got into bed beside her. "She got out and tried to get out the room, but you grabbed her. "You pinned her down on the bed and raped her." The hearing was told McDonald, of Newton Mearns, also East Renfrewshire, flew into a rage again later that day when he found out the woman was seeing someone else. READ MORE: Serial sex attacker raped woman he met on Tinder Judge Brown: "You punched her in the face with such force it caused severe injury in form of fractured skull and facial bones." He added the victim had been abused in her own home "where she was entitled to feel safe". The judge told McDonald: "Your behaviour has caused her substantial and enduring psychological harm. McDonald was put on the sex offenders list and banned from going near the woman - both for an indefinite period. Gary Allan KC, defending, said the attacker maintained his innocence. A clutch of testimonials from those who knew McDonald had earlier been given to Judge Brown. The advocate added McDonald's life was also in "tatters" whatever the jail-term would be.
