James Whale issued an emotional update on his cancer battle as he appeared on live television. The TalkTV presenter was taking part in one of his last ever shows following his revelation he has stage four kidney cancer and has been dealing with it for five years.
Now, in a heartbreaking moment alongside co-host Ash Gould, 53, the 74-year-old TV star confessed things are getting "very very difficult". Speaking on James Whale Unleashed on Friday, the presetner opened up about his cancer journey while talking to a guest who had been through cancer with her late husband.
He said: "Until very recently, everything was quite normal for me, everything was fine, and then you do get to a stage like I am now, with things get to be very very difficult."
James added: "To anybody else who is in the final stages of cancer, you have my sympathy. I know exactly what you're going through, I do know, I look basically okay, I get told you look alright and I look okay, it's all make-up."
With his comments shared to social media, fans were quick to offer messages of support. One user wrote on the Twitter /X upload: "I'm also stage 4 kidney cancer but you are a real inspiration. I seriously can't believe how much better you look compared to 2 weeks ago!"
James first revealed in May that his condition had worsened. He told viewers that treatment was no longer an option and candidly said he will be "lucky to make it to Christmas".
He sadly told viewers at the time: "I'm at the end of my cancer journey. There is no treatment I can have anymore."
He added: "I can't tell you how grateful I am to Talk to actually let me on the air and sit next to Ash, which is a real pain in the butt, but I've been doing it for 25 years!"
He said at the time that his recent ill health had taken its toll on him. He also revealed he had a severe bout of flu which led to an intensive care stay.
Despite his health, the present was able to joke, saying: "It might actually be helping me, you never know, so I don't let that cloud my judgment – but on the medication I am on, I'm all over the place.
"I'm hoping to go on for another few weeks, few months but as soon as I can't do the show anymore, I won't."

James Martin announced he will be taking a break from his ITV show, Saturday Morning. TV chef James Martin has declared he will be taking a break from his hit ITV show, Saturday Morning, as he and his colleagues take time out for summer. The famed cook concluded June 7's show with a touching message. The celebrity chef and TV personality wrapped up the programme by expressing his appreciation, saying: "That's all we have got time for today, a massive thank you to all of my guests". He then showed his gratitude towards his food team, continuing: "My food team, you can sleep better now. Daniel and Sally, and of course, Harry Redknapp and Carly Paoli." James subsequently announced the series finale, adding: "That is also for the series. Me and the crew are heading off on sunny holidays. Different climates." Engaging in banter about holiday plans with the crew, it was revealed one member would be jetting off to Portugal whilst James plans a jaunt to Yorkshire, reports the Mirror. He assured fans that they can expect more gastronomic treats when the show resumes: "Yorkshire for me. But we will be back here with more top chefs, other brilliant guests, and more delicious recipes later on in the year." James signed off by wishing the audience a fabulous summer break. "Until then, thanks for watching," he said. "Have a wonderful, fantastic summer. I'll see you out there wherever you are." So I've sold quite a few of the race cars and I've gone into sort of old school cars. So stuff that I can get into and get out of." James noted that motor racing is better suited for the svelte: "It comes down to the fact that I race cars, or I still try and race a few cars and I actually struggle to get out of them now. "Getting in them, you kind of fall in them, but then you've got to get out of them and it just doesn't look very good." ITV has been making headlines in recent weeks over the brutal changes they have been making behind-the-scenes, reportedly leading to staff redundancies and even reports Lorraine Kelly is considering quitting the network after her number of shows per year was cut in half and her time slot hugely reduced. ITV revealed last month: "From January 2026, Good Morning Britain will be extended by 30 minutes to run from 6am to 9.30am daily, and will transfer to be produced by ITV News at ITN at their base at Gray's Inn Road in London. GMB will be made by a dedicated team within ITV News at ITN. "This change will see ITV bring all its national news gathering into one hub, with Good Morning Britain benefitting from the journalistic and production resources already in place for national news bulletins, for the website and for digital platforms including ITVX." It was added: "Lorraine, This Morning and Loose Women will continue to be produced by ITV Studios and will be broadcast from a new location in central London." Drastic changes have not yet been made for weekend scheduling.
