British Open 2025: Sergio Garcia snaps driver in half on second hole of Open final round
After a poor drive Sunday at Royal Portrush's par-5 second hole, Garcia recoiled his driver and slammed the club into the turf. The shaft immediately snapped in half.
Despite the frustration, Garcia salvaged birdie on the hole, and playing the rest of the round with 13 clubs, Garcia shot 3-under 71 to finish his Open Championship at 3 under.
Garcia began his LIV Golf season with a win and two other top-10s in his first five starts. But he has just one top-10 – and two top-25s – in five events since. He made two of his three major cuts as well, though he likely won't have cracked the top 30 in either of them.
As a result, Garcia arguably has done little to boost his Ryder Cup prospects in recent events.
'I had a good conversation with [European captain Luke Donald] last week, and we both know what we want," Garcia said earlier this week. "The only thing I can do is keep working hard, keep building my confidence up, and if I'm able to do that, then it should be fine. We'll see."

Former Gunner named as Premier League club captain
Just a couple of weeks after signing for the club, former Gunner Granit Xhaka has been named the new captain of Sunderland AFC. Photo via Granit Xhaka joined Sunderland AFC on a three-year deal in late July, leaving Bayer Leverkusen after two seasons and three trophies with the German club. Xhaka's new club have clearly already taken to him, as just a fortnight after his arrival he's been named their club captain. 'It makes me incredibly proud to be captain of this Club and of this team,' Xhaka said. 'I hope to show my leadership on and off the pitch, helping my team-mates in the training ground and across the Club. 'To be part of Sunderland's history, alongside some of the names who have worn the armband before, is an honour. People who know me know exactly what they'll get – I'm someone who demands a lot. I'm a winner and I want to win – and I expect the same from my team-mates.' Photo byXhaka had also worn the captain's armband at Borussia Mönchengladbach and Arsenal, though perhaps the less said the better about the latter stint. The midfielder is also wearing the number 34 shirt at Sunderland, just as he did at Arsenal. Sunderland spent in the region of €20m (£17.2m) for Xhaka, and they clearly intend for him to be a key part of their team in 2025/26. Photo byBefore his move to Leverkusen, Xhaka spent seven years in the Premier League with Arsenal. The 32-year-old won two FA Cups and two Community Shields with the Gunners. 2025/26 will bring his first competitive fixtures playing against his old club, with the two clubs set to meet on the weekend of November 8-9th.

Stockport sign Norwich defender Hills
Stockport County have signed Norwich City defender Brad Hills for an undisclosed fee on a five-year deal. The 21-year-old ended last season on loan at the Hatters and made 18 appearances in all competitions as they finished third. He could go straight into the squad to face Leyton Orient, who knocked Stockport out of the play-offs in May, on Saturday. "I don't need to tell our supporters what Brad will bring to our group, as he showed that in his time with us previously, but it's great now to have him as our player," boss Dave Challinor told the club website. Pittsburgh native Neal Shipley earns PGA Tour card
The pride of Mount Lebanon's and Central Catholic's golf team is now an official PGA member. Ohio State golfer Neal Shipley just became the third Korn Ferry Tour player to get the card this year. The announcement came Wednesday after Shipley's impressive performance on the Korn Ferry Tour. He won two matches and had a streak of five consecutive top 10 finishes. Shipley tried to make the cut as an amateur for the 125th U.S. Open in Oakmont in June. He had said it was a dream for him to play at his hometown course. Unfortunately, he did not qualify, but he was at Oakmont for the tournament, cheering players on and talking to fans. Shipley played three years of collegiate golf at James Madison before transferring to Ohio State for the 2023-24 season. He stood apart by finishing as the low amateur at both the 2024 Masters and the 2024 U.S. Open, joining Jack Nicklaus as the only Ohio State golfers to achieve the low amateur honor at the Masters. At the 2024 Masters, Shipley was paired with golf legend Tiger Woods. His recent performance includes tying for eighth place at the Pinnacle Bank Championship in Omaha, Neb., just last week. Shipley is among the top Korn Ferry Tour players, with the potential for an immediate promotion to the PGA Tour for the remainder of 2025 if he secures a third win this year. Johnny Keefer and Austin Smotherman, both with two Korn Ferry Tour wins in 2025, are also close to earning immediate promotions. A total of 20 Korn Ferry Tour players will earn PGA Tour cards for 2026, a reduction from 30 in the previous year. Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts.
