Fire-breathing Nancy Mace gets ICY reception in campaign for South Carolina's top job

Daily Mail5 days ago
The primary election is ten months away, but many South Carolinians who spoke to the Daily Mail said they are unenthused about Nancy Mace's maverick campaign for governor.
'No way, not for South Carolina,' Rodney, a Charleston resident, told the Daily Mail in the city's bustling downtown on Monday. He made it clear in other terms that he was not a MAGA fan.
Another resident, Sherry, told the Daily Mail she is 'not interested in Miss Mace.'
'She's for our current president,' Sherry added, 'That's a no.'
Half of the voters the Daily Mail spoke to, most using first names only to protect their identities, were flat out against Mace, if not skeptical of her leadership in Congress.
Meanwhile, Annie, a South Carolinian seemingly in her mid-twenties, was more enthusiastic about Mace's announcement.
'It's awesome to have a woman run for governor,' she said. 'Historically, it has only been males in South Carolina, so I'm excited to see what she can do.'
Rep. Mace, 47, a third-term congresswoman who represents the coastal areas surrounding Charleston, announced on Monday she's running for governor in 2026. She's forged a fiery reputation for her dramatic confrontations with pro-transgender activists and divulged deeply personal stories about sexual assault and abuse.

The conservative is not shying away from her controversial reputation forged on Capitol Hill as she joins an already-crowded pack to replace outgoing Gov. Henry McMaster.
'I'm not a huge fan of Nancy Mace for our governor,' said Trent, a Republican from Charleston. 'There's a couple of big things that I don't agree with her on.'
He didn't elaborate on what, but did relent that he'd vote for Mace 'if there's not a better candidate.'
The congresswoman's primary opponents include South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and fellow Rep. Ralph Norman.
Though the race is still early, whoever secures an endorsement from President Donald Trump will likely hold a major advantage among the crowded GOP field.
Another South Carolinian, Bill, noted that Mace's announcement 'looks like an obvious step up for her ... after a bunch of years in Congress.'
Another Republican, David, admitted he didn't know anything about Mace.
'Well, I really don't know much about her, but I'm gonna look at her for sure,' he responded. As a conservative, he'd likely go for whoever the GOP nominee is, he later clarified.

Rodney Simons, a Charleston resident, told the Daily Mail he thinks the congresswoman would not be a good choice for South Carolina governor
Maebelle, an elderly lady who appeared to be in her eighties, was happy to hear of Mace's announcement and shared some excitement about the news because she claimed the two had met.
'I think she's a cool person,' she told the Daily Mail. 'I met her once, and I think she'll be good.'
'She seemed to be a fair person, and someone you can go to and talk to and for the right things.'
Early polling shows that the 47-year-old may be one of the top contenders to win the Republican nomination, though it's too close to early seen.
A survey from the South Carolina Policy Council published last week found Mace with 16 percent support while state AG Wilson had 15 percent.
Wilson, the son of longtime congressman Joe Wilson, announced his bid for office last month. Mace sparked attacks against Wilson for mishandling legal cases and has painted him as someone 'who likes to put pedophiles on trial and give them one day in jail.'
Wilson has denied the accusation and has labeled the lawmaker a 'liar.'
The poll also showed Rep. Norman received 6 percent support, while Lt. Gov. Evette snagged 8 percent and State Sen. Josh Kimbrell had 3 percent. Still, over half of the respondents, 52 percent, said they were undecided.
During Mace's campaign announcement at her alma mater, The Citadel, a military college in Charleston, South Carolina, she ripped into 'weak leadership' of the past.
She pledged to no longer 'turn a blind eye' to 'trannies invading women's spaces, an unaccountable judicial process and failed schools.'
Her top priorities are to restore law and order, protect women and children and fix the judicial system.
She also had some new proposals: The Republican unveiled a five-year plan to eliminate state income taxes. 'Other states, like Florida, Tennessee, Texas, have zero state income tax,' she said.
Mace also announced initiatives to expand school choice, vocational education and floated policies that could help the state's authorities better cooperate with ICE to accelerate deportations.

India's election body faces scrutiny as voter list anomalies prompt allegations of ‘vote theft'

India 's election commission is facing renewed scrutiny over discrepancies in voter lists and allegations of result tampering. The latest row began last week after opposition leader Rahul Gandhi claimed that almost 100,000 listed voters in Karnataka 's Mahadevapura constituency were fake. The voter lists were replete with duplicate names, wrong addresses and blurred photos, he said, calling this a 'theft' of the people's mandate. The election commission denied any wrongdoing. It, however, asked Mr Gandhi to submit a formal statement and provide evidence. DK Shivakumar, deputy chief minister of Karnataka from Mr Gandhi's Congress party, then filed a complaint to the poll body seeking a full audit of voters rolls. He also asked the commission to provide voter data in a format that would allow checking it for possible manipulation. Similar allegations were made in other states. In Uttar Pradesh, Congress chief Ajay Rai said that the ruling BJP had used fake voter entries and duplicate names to influence the 2024 parliamentary election in prime minister Narendra Modi's Varanasi constituency. In northern state of Haryana, Congress MP Deepender Hooda claimed the results had changed in the BJP's favour after several rounds of the opposition leading. These allegations mounted pressure on the election commission, which was already under scrutiny for controversially updating electoral rolls in Bihar ahead of the state election in November. The poll body removed 6.5 million names after Special Intensive Revision it said was aimed at eliminating dead, duplicate, or migrated voters. But Mr Gandhi seized on the exercise to accuse the commission of aiding the BJP in 'vote theft', echoing opposition claims that the rushed process disproportionately targeted minority Muslim voters, typically considered to support non-BJP parties. The commission claimed the Special Intensive Revision, a door-to-door verification drive conducted between 25 June and 26 July, had reached all 78.9 million registered voters in the eastern state. The exercise was the first extensive update since 2003 and was long overdue. The commission says similar verification exercises will soon be launched across the country, covering close to a billion voters. The preliminary rolls now list 72.4 million electors in Bihar, 6.5 million fewer than before. The commission claims to have removed 2.2 million to deceased voters, about 700,000 duplicate registrations and roughly 3.6 million people emigrants from the state. The commission insists the revision was necessary and impartial but refuses to publish the list of deletions. It has given voters until 1 September to seek corrections and, according to local media reports, more than 165,000 people have already submitted requests. In several Bihar villages, the BBC found voters complaining the newly drafted electoral rolls were riddled with glaring errors, from photos of strangers appearing next to their names to images of women replacing male family members. Some villagers discovered deceased relatives listed as active voters while others spotted the same person enrolled multiple times. The Bihar revision is now at the centre of a wider political storm in India, amplified by Mr Gandhi accusing the election commission of enabling large-scale voter suppression. Citing the deletions in Bihar and similar exercises in Karnataka, Mr Gandhi alleged the process was being manipulated to disenfranchise opposition-leaning communities, a charge the poll body strongly denied. Fellow opposition parties in the INDIA bloc, led by Mr Gandhi's Congress, echoed his charge, accusing the commission of working in the BJP's interest ahead of a high-stakes state election. The Congress launched a 'Vote Chori', meaning vote theft campaign, alleging electoral list manipulation in the 2024 parliamentary election, especially in the Bangalore Central constituency, and demanding greater transparency from the election commission. 'Vote chori is an attack on the foundational idea of 'one man, one vote'. A clean voter roll is imperative for free and fair elections. Our demand from the EC is clear - be transparent and release digital voter rolls so that people and parties can audit them,' Mr Gandhi said. The opposition leader alleged that over 100,000 fake votes in Bengaluru's Mahadevapura helped the BJP win the seat in last year's parliamentary election. The BJP won the seat by 32,707 votes. His party alleged similar voter roll anomalies in Bihar, including hundreds registered at single addresses. Mr Gandhi called this a 'huge criminal fraud', accusing the BJP and the election commission of collusion. The commission rejected Mr Gandhi's allegations on X as 'false and misleading'. The poll body claimed that it was not sharing electoral rolls in machine-readable formats to safeguard privacy and comply with legal precedents. The BJP dismissed the opposition campaign as pure theatre, with spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia saying the Congress party should pursue election petitions rather than float unsubstantiated accusations.

Oil falls as markets focus on US-Russia talks

LONDON, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Oil prices fell on Monday, extending last week's more than 4% decline, as investors looked to talks between the U.S. and Russia later this week on the war in Ukraine. Brent crude futures fell 45 cents, or 0.68%, to $66.14 a barrel by 0826 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were down 49 cents, or 0.77%, to $63.39. U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that he would meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15 in Alaska to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine. The talks follow increased U.S. pressure on Russia, raising the prospect that penalties on Moscow could also be tightened if a peace deal is not reached. Trump set a deadline of last Friday for Russia, which invaded Ukraine in February 2022, to agree to peace or have its oil buyers face secondary sanctions. At the same time, Washington is pressing India to reduce purchases of Russian oil. UBS has lowered its year-end Brent crude forecast to $62 a barrel from $68, citing higher supply from South America and resilient output from sanctioned countries. An Exxon Mobil-led consortium began crude production four months earlier than expected at a fourth floating production, storage and offloading vessel in Guyana, Exxon said on Friday. Consultancy Energy Aspects estimated Indian refiners have already purchased WTI totalling 5 million barrels for August loadings, with an incremental 5 million barrels possible depending on tender outcomes, and 5 million barrels for September loadings. Trump's higher tariffs on imports from dozens of countries, which took effect on Thursday, are expected to weigh on economic activity as they force changes to supply chains and fuel higher inflation. Separately, data from the National Bureau of Statistics on Saturday showed China's producer prices fell more than expected in July.

JD Vance unwittingly sparks new wave of calls to release the Epstein files in Fox interview

Vice President JD Vance 's latest attempt to shift the narrative away from the Jeffrey Epstein furore over the weekend has only succeeded in inspiring fresh calls for the release of all federal files on the late pedophile. Appearing on Fox News 's Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, Vance sought to kill off the uproar that has raged ever since the Justice Department and FBI ruled in early July that the deceased sex trafficker left behind no 'client list' and died by suicide in August 2019. That verdict enraged President Donald Trump 's supporters, who continue to demand answers and allege a 'cover-up' to protect influential people. 'I have to say, Maria, I laugh at the Democrats who are now all of a sudden so interested in the Epstein files,' the VP told Bartiromo on Sunday. 'For four years, Joe Biden and the Democrats did absolutely nothing about this story. We know that Jeffrey Epstein had a lot of connections with left-wing politicians and left-wing billionaires. 'And now President Trump has demanded full transparency from this. And yet somehow the Democrats are attacking him and not the Biden administration, which did nothing for four years.' Vance's comments only succeeded in reviving calls for full disclosure on Epstein after a clip of the interview was circulated on social media. 'Fine. Release all the files,' wrote Defending Democracy's director Bill Kristol. 'With victims and survivors' names and PII redacted. But no redactions of clients, enablers, and see-no-evil associates.' 'The thing about people on that list that bothers me is not their political leanings or their bank account,' said newspaper columnist Brigitte Pellerin. 'Donald Trump's name is in the Epstein files and JD Vance has been plotting with the AG and FBI Director to cover it up,' alleged Pod Save America host Jon Favreau. 'Release the names! Democrats, Republicans, billionaires, or not. What are you afraid of, JD Vance?' Trump continues to face questions about his past friendship with Epstein, but has not been accused of any wrongdoing and is currently suing The Wall Street Journal for reporting that he once sent the sex offender a 'bawdy' doodle for his birthday. It has been reported that the president was briefed by Attorney General Pam Bondi, who stated that his name appears in the files, but this does not imply misconduct. Trump is known to have become increasingly frustrated at the story's continued dominance of the news agenda over the past five weeks and has even lashed out at members of his conservative coalition for obsessing over Epstein. 'Look, the whole thing is a hoax,' he declared impatiently in the Oval Office last week. 'It's put out by the Democrats because we've had the most successful six months in the history of our country. That's just a way of trying to divert attention to something that's total bulls***.' His attempt to dismiss the matter did not satisfy conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, for one, who commented: 'Trump's disastrous handling of the Epstein firestorm last month was starting to die down and now he has let the corporate media bait him into re-launching a new Streisand effect.' Jones was referring to the phenomenon through which a public figure's efforts to suppress an unwanted story only succeed in drawing more attention to it.
