
Couple's energy bill quadruples after 'faulty heat pump'
A couple who installed a heat pump in order to save money say they have been left with a faulty system and their bills have more than quadrupled.Geoffrey and Julie Cox claim since the air source heat pump was put in their bills have risen from £140 a month to more than £1,000 and it does not heat their home.The Chesterfield couple are among others who have had similar issues with a system fitted by Sheffield's Greener Living Ltd, which received money under a government scheme before going into administration last March. The BBC has made several attempts to contact the defunct firm. The government said heat pumps "fitted under government schemes must be installed by a certified installer".
Air source heat pumps are renewable heating systems that extract heat from the outside air and transfer it into the home.They run on electricity instead of gas and are widely seen as the best way of cutting emissions of carbon dioxide from home heating systems, which accounts for 14% of the UK's carbon emissions.
A Freedom of Information request seen by the BBC showed that Greener Living Ltd was given more than £4m as part of government efforts to encourage homeowners to replace existing fossil fuel heating with more efficient, low carbon systems.Mr Cox said they decided to install a greener alternative to their gas boiler in order to keep their bills down amid rising energy costs."It's so frustrating because you know every month you're going to get a walloping bill and how are we going to pay it? We've run out of cash."On top of high bills, the couple say their financial situation has been made worse because they are still paying off the £15,000 loan taken to pay for installation.Mrs Cox said: "If we had the money then we would have had it taken out and the gas put back in without a doubt."But the fact is, we still have to pay for the system even if we had it removed."We did this to save money but in actual fact it's cost us a fortune."
The couple said numerous attempts to fix the system had failed and their bungalow had never felt colder.In winter, they said they were sat inside with their coats on and with blankets over them to keep warm."I was taking a hot water to bed. I've not done that since I was 10," said Mrs Cox.Other former Greener Living Ltd customers have complained about similar problems on a dedicated Facebook page which has nearly 400 members.One person posted: "The system cost a fortune and it's never worked properly. Four freezing cold winters I've endured."A spokesperson for the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero said: "Any heat pump fitted under government schemes must be installed by a certified installer, with any issues promptly and properly rectified at no cost to households."Where regulatory issues are identified, we work closely with Ofgem and certification bodies to ensure support is available to households to find redress."The spokesperson added that 92% of heat pump users who were surveyed after having their heat pump for two heating seasons were satisfied.

Mint chocolate lovers will be delighted to see an Aero Peppermint Mocha flavour in the mix, which can be spotted with green packaging. Another is a "green triangle" mocha flavour - branded alongside Quality Street. Vanilla cookie dough latte is also among the new flavours available. The 250g cans sell at Morrisons for £3.50 each. They are suitable for vegetarians. Facebook users were quick to note the new flavours, with some speculating which would be their favourites. One user commented: "Not sure about this. "Coffee should be coffee and the only exception is a mocha hut none of these mixed flavours." Home Office plans to spend £2.2bn of foreign aid on asylum support this year
The Home Office plans to spend about £2.2 billion of foreign aid to support asylum seekers this financial year, according to new figures. The amount of overseas development assistance (ODA) budgeted by the Home Office – which is largely used to cover accommodation costs such as hotels for asylum seekers – is slightly less than the £2.3 billion it spent in 2024/25. International rules allow countries to count first-year costs of supporting refugees as overseas development assistance (ODA). The figures, first reported by the BBC, were published in recent days on the Home Office website. The Home Office said it is 'urgently taking action to restore order and reduce costs' which will cut the amount spent to support asylum seekers and refugees in the UK. It also said it was expected to have saved £500 million in asylum support costs in the last financial year, and that this had saved £200 million in ODA which had been passed back to the Treasury. A total of 32,345 asylum seekers were being housed temporarily in UK hotels at the end of March this year. This figure is down 15% from the end of December, when the total was 38,079, and 6% lower than the 34,530 at the same point a year earlier. Asylum seekers and their families are housed in temporary accommodation if they are waiting for the outcome of a claim or an appeal and have been assessed as not being able to support themselves independently. They are housed in hotels if there is not enough space in accommodation provided by local authorities or other organisations. Labour has previously said it is 'committed to end the use of asylum hotels over time', adding that under the previous Conservative government at one stage 'more than 400 hotels were in use and almost £9 million per day was being spent'. Jo White, chairwoman of the Red Wall group of Labour MPs, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Saturday: 'We need to be looking at things like ECHR article eight. I don't think anything's off the table … including looking at new options such as processing abroad. 'So, we have to be open to see how we can move move that backlog as quickly as possible. I'm getting impatient. 'I know my colleagues in parliament are getting impatient and we're pressing the Government as hard as we can on this.' A Home Office spokesperson said: 'We inherited an asylum system under exceptional pressure and are urgently taking action to restore order and reduce costs. 'This will ultimately reduce the amount of official development assistance spent to support asylum seekers and refugees in the UK. 'We are immediately speeding up decisions and increasing returns so that we can end the use of hotels and save the taxpayer £4 billion by 2026. 'The Rwanda scheme also wasted £700 million to remove just four volunteers – instead, we have surged removals to nearly 30,000 since the election, are giving law enforcement new counter-terror style powers, and increasing intelligence sharing through our Border Security Command to tackle the heart of the issue, vile people-smuggling gangs.'
