SEOUL: Hybe founder and chair Bang Si-hyuk, once celebrated as the trailblazer of the K-pop industry with the unprecedented success of BTS, now finds himself under intense legal scrutiny, putting Hybe's roughly 12 trillion won market valuation to the test.
According to the allegations, Bang deliberately misled investors in 2019 by suggesting that the public listing of Hybe – then Big Hit Entertainment – would be unlikely, while the company was preparing to go public as planned in the back.
He is accused of unfair trading, pocketing roughly half of the 400 billion won generated in proceeds.
Bang, who had remained mostly silent throughout the process, sent an official statement to Hybe employees, shortly before returning to South Korea from the United States on Aug 11.
'Having already provided a detailed explanation regarding the circumstances behind the listing during the previous probe carried out by the financial regulators, I will continue to explain the matter once again in full,' the statement read.
'I expect that this process will help clarify the facts, and I will humbly await the authorities' decision.'
As President Lee Jae Myung pushes his 'one-strike' policy in a declared war against stock manipulation, Bang has emerged as a prime example of its enforcement, with authorities competing to take the lead in pressuring him.
On July 16, the Financial Supervisory Commission, the nation's top financial regulator, referred the case to prosecutors, the strongest measure the agency can take.
Meanwhile, police have intensified their crackdown, raiding the agency's headquarters as well as the Korea Exchange.
The National Tax Service has also launched a sweeping probe into Hybe, deploying its special bureau that handles large-scale tax evasion cases.
Industry officials noted that it is highly unusual for all major state investigative bodies, including the police, financial regulators, prosecutors and the NTS, to simultaneously target a single company, highlighting the extraordinary scope of the investigation.
Though still at an early stage, the criminal charges against Bang could trigger upheaval in Hybe's shareholder structure.
In recent years, major investors have steadily pared back their holdings in the K-pop powerhouse amid a series of public setbacks, including its feud with former Ador chief executive officer and producer Min Hee-jin.
Bang is the largest shareholder of the Kospi-listed company, holding a 31.57%, followed by game developer Netmarble at 9.44%, the National Pension Service at 7.8% and crypto exchange operator Dunamu at 5.53%.
Although the NPS remains one of Hybe's largest shareholders, it had trimmed its stake by more than one percentage point in June 2024.
A month earlier, Netmarble offloaded Hybe shares amounting to 2.6 percentage points.
While the game developer explained the sale as a move to secure liquidity and offset operating losses, industry watchers pointed instead to escalated volatility in Hybe's valuation, challenged by its dispute with Min. — The Korea Herald/ANN

Police Arrest Man For Threatening To Plant Explosives At PLAVE's Upcoming Concert

Concerts are meant to be exciting events where fans gather to see their favourite artists perform. Unfortunately, many K-pop concerts have been targeted with bomb threats, sparking concern. Recently, news outlets reported that a man had recently threatened to plant a bomb at PLAVE's (플레이브) upcoming Seoul concert. The virtual group will hold an encore concert at Gocheok Sky Dome on 21st and 22nd November 2025 as part of their Asia tour. According to reports, the suspect, referred to as Mr. A, shared an edited promotional photo of the concert on 19th August 2025 (Tuesday) with the phrase 'I will plant explosives'. After receiving reports of the social media post, police arrested Mr. A. During questioning, the man reportedly stated that the post was 'just a prank'. The case has since been transferred to the police with jurisdiction over Mr. A's residence for further investigation. The 20-something is facing charges for public intimidation. Earlier this year, South Korea criminalised threats against the general public. Sadly, the number of bomb threats at K-pop concerts is rising, even with the new law on public intimidation. Earlier this month, K-pop group THE BOYZ had to delay their concert at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena after the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation (KSPO) received an anonymous fax claiming that an explosive device had been placed at the venue. Everyone in the building was instructed to evacuate while authorities searched for the device. Thankfully, the police found no explosive devices, and the concert was able to proceed as usual. However, the incident sparked concern over the safety and caution at large-scale events. Since many of these threats ended up as pranks by netizens, there is now a debate on whether the government should take stronger legal measures, as weak penalties for making false threats may embolden offenders. Even if they end up as hoaxes, bomb threats should be taken seriously as they pose a potential danger to the public. We hope the South Korean government will take the appropriate measures to ensure the safety of its citizens. At the same time, the public should remain vigilant for any suspicious activity online and offline. Source: Chosun News

Over 3,700 domestic violence cases reported nationwide as of June, says Noraini

IPOH: A total of 3,768 domestic violence cases were reported nationwide as of June this year, says Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad. The Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister said the cases involved 2,751 female victims (73%) and 1,017 male victims (27%). 'Most domestic violence cases are committed by individuals known to the women (victims) such as husbands, ex-husbands or boyfriends. Many incidents also go unreported due to embarrassment or fear of social stigma. "However, women are not the only victims as men too experience domestic violence, facing both physical and emotional abuse,' she told reporters after officiating the Advokasi Kesejahteraan Untuk Wanita @ Keganasan Rumah Tangga @ Aku Wanita @ KRT Programme on Wednesday (Aug 20). Noraini also said according to police statistics, Perak is among the top five states with the highest number of domestic violence cases. From January to June 2025, Selangor recorded 687 cases, followed by Perak (653), Johor (440), Kedah (379) and Sabah (289). "Victims are aged between 36 and 45 years old," she added. Noraini said there were also 32 cases involving persons with disabilities (OKU) comprising 20 women and 12 men. "We believe the increase in reported cases may be due to greater awareness, as more victims are now willing to come forward. 'However, some female victims remain reluctant to lodge reports because they depend financially on their husbands. In some cases, victims who initially wanted to report eventually backed out, fearing for their children or family, " she added. "That is why we are here to provide counselling and support. 'Come forward, lodge a report and protect yourself. Do not delay until it is too late and end in tragedy,' she said. On the programme, Noraini said that it was created as a strategic platform to engage with the community through high-impact activities, ensuring transparency in addressing domestic violence issues within neighbourhoods. "Through this initiative, issues related to domestic violence are discussed in depth with experts in the field as well as survivors who have managed to rebuild their lives after experiencing abuse. "In addition, a psychological intervention session called 'K-Chat' has also been introduced. It is a group-based intervention that brings together survivors, counsellors, and trained facilitators to help participants better understand and cope with the challenges they face as a result of domestic violence," she added.

iQIYI Eyes Hong Kong Secondary Listing To Raise Up To US$300 Million

Chinese video streaming platform iQIYI is preparing for a secondary listing in Hong Kong that could raise between US$200 million and US$300 million, according to people familiar with the matter. The Nasdaq-listed company, controlled by Baidu, has hired Bank of America, China International Capital Corp (CICC) and JPMorgan as advisers. iQIYI is expected to file its application in the third quarter, with the listing potentially taking place before the 2026 Lunar New Year in February. The move comes as an increasing number of Chinese firms seek listings in Hong Kong, partly to hedge against the risk of being delisted from US exchanges amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. This trend has pushed Hong Kong ahead of New York in terms of listing volumes this year. With a market value of around US$2.2 billion, iQIYI is China's second-largest video streaming service after Tencent Video. Shares in the company surged more than 20% on Monday after regulators announced measures to support quality content creation, though the stock remains about 30% lower than a year ago. Last year, it plunged nearly 60% on the back of shrinking revenue, subscriber challenges, weaker advertising demand and foreign exchange losses. Analysts expect iQIYI to report second-quarter revenue of 6.6 billion yuan, an 11.2% year-on-year decline, according to LSEG data. iQIYI, as well as the banks involved, declined to comment on the planned listing.
