Nepal PM Oli to visit to India in mid-September

Kathmandu, Jul 20 (PTI) Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli will pay an official visit to India towards mid-September, the Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.
'Preparations for the upcoming visit of the prime minister are underway. However, the date and the detailed schedules of the visit are yet to be finalised," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lok Bahadur Chhetri said.
However, sources at the Prime Minister's Office said that Oli will embark on his official visit to the southern neighbour on September 16.
The visit will be short this time, probably for two days, the sources added.
Oli, the chairperson of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) – popular as the CPN-UML – had assumed the office of prime minister for the fourth time last July.
He had chosen to visit China for his maiden foreign visit, breaking the tradition of visiting India as the first destination after assuming the post of prime minister.
Prime Minister Oli visited China in December last year at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Li Qiang. During his four day visit, the prime minister addressed a function at Peking University in Beijing and met President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Qiang.

In June 2020, border tensions between India and China escalated when a violent face-off between Indian and Chinese soldiers took place in Ladakh's Galwan Valley along the Line of Actual Control. It led to the death of 20 Indian soldiers. Beijing said that the clash left four of its soldiers dead. In response, India imposed several restrictions on China including banning hundreds of popular Chinese apps and suspending passenger routes, Reuters reported. While China allowed students and business travellers in 2022, Indians were not allowed to apply for tourist visas until March this year, when both countries announced that they would resume direct air services, Reuters reported. Since the Galwan clashes, China and India have held several rounds of military and diplomatic talks to resolve their border standoff. In October, the two countries announced that they had reached a patrolling arrangement along the Line of Actual Control, 'leading to the disengagement' of the two militaries in eastern Ladakh. The agreement came two days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan. This was the first formal meeting of the two leaders since the military standoff began in mid-2020. In January, the two countries agreed to resume the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra this summer, restore direct flights and ease visa restrictions after Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong in Beijing. In July, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankart said during a meeting with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng that relations between both countries were ' steadily improving ' and called for the continued normalisation of the bilateral ties.

Human rights groups and Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), claim his detention is politically driven. Concerns about Khan's conditions in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, are growing globally. Reports indicate he is held in solitary confinement, cut off from newspapers, books, and television. This isn't Grenell's first show of support for Khan. Grenell previously backed Khan during Trump's 2024 campaign. Not govt but NGT has banned use of old vehicles in NCR: Gadkari
New Delhi, Jul 23 (PTI) Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday said the government has not prohibited plying of old vehicles, and it was the National Green Tribunal which banned use of diesel and petrol vehicles beyond a certain age in the NCR. The vehicle scrapping policy of the government does not ban use of 15-year-old vehicles, Gadkari said in a written reply to Rajya Sabha. He further said that the Supreme Court has directed the transport departments of states in the National Capital Region (NCR) that all diesel vehicles more than 10 years old and petrol vehicles more than 15 years old shall not ply in terms of order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) dated April 7, 2015. The road transport and highways minister said that the government has formulated the Voluntary Vehicle Fleet Modernization Program (V-VMP) or Vehicle Scrapping Policy for creation of an ecosystem to phase out unfit and polluting vehicles in an environment-friendly manner. "Under this for private vehicles plying in States/UTs other than Delhi NCR, determined based on their fitness status, as certified by the Automated Testing Stations (ATS)," he said. In respect of vehicles registered in the name of governments, the usage will expire after 15 years, Gadkari added. Responding to a separate query, the minister said till date, 13,795 black spots have been identified on National Highways. The minister said rectification of black spots is a continuous process, and temporary measures are taken on an immediate basis. "Out of total 13,795 black spots identified on National Highways (NHs) in the country, short-term rectification has been completed on 11,866 black spots and long-term rectification has been completed on 5,324 black spots," Gadkari said. Replying to another question, he said the Dehradun-Delhi Access Controlled highway with a total capital cost of ₹ 11,868.6 crore is targeted for completion by October 2025.
