The mega-brands pulling back millions from Pride events as DEI continues to crumble

A host of major companies is pulling financial support from this year's Pride events as once-popular DEI initiatives continue to tank under the Trump administration.
Credit card giant Mastercard is pulling it corporate sponsorship of the New York City Pride March as many Diversity, Equity and Inclusion measures have crumbled during President Trump's second term.
Mastercard has supported Heritage of Pride, the nonprofit that organizes the annual NYC parade as well as other Pride events, for around a decade, the Wall Street Journal reported.
It isn't the only NYC Pride sponsor not returning this year.
PepsiCo, Nissan, Citi, Comcast and PricewaterhouseCoopers have also pulled out as sponsors of NYC Pride.
Financial reasons, including looming tariff threats, have been cited by companies like Nissan for the decision as Trump's war on DEI has highlighted his first few months in office.
John Paul Rollert, an adjunct associate professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, told the New York Times that many organizations fear 'that they will be subject to heightened scrutiny and perhaps even reprisal by the current administration.'
'Supporting a Pride event is not particularly expensive undertaking. This is a fear of a potential reputational harm that might come from the administration turning its spotlight on them,' he added.
Beer maker Anheuser-Busch InBev pulled support for Pride events in St. Louis while booze company Diageo dropped out of events in San Francisco, though Diageo said it would sponsor U.S. Pride events through its Smirnoff brand, WSJ reported.
Eve Keller, co-president of USA Prides, told NBC News that members across the country have reported a significant reduction in sponsorship funds this year.
Some rural Pride events, Keller said, are experiencing a 70 to 90 percent reduction in funds compared to an average year.
Support for Pride events soared in 2015 following the Supreme Court's ruling in favor of same-sex marriage.
Companies supporting Pride events have fueled accusations of only showing support to the community when it is financially advantageous - dubbed 'pinkwashing' or 'rainbow capitalism.'
This year, 39 percent of executives plan to decrease their recognition of Pride, according to a survey by Gravity Research, WSJ reported.
Trump's executive order against DEI policies and programs has now seemingly further hindered Pride events.
Trump declared DEI initiatives to be 'illegal and immoral,' barring the government from funding them. He also prohibited federal funds from promoting 'gender ideology.'
In an attempt to avoid the administration's wrath, many companies have scaled back their DEI practices
Suzanne Ford, the executive director of San Francisco Pride, said companies backing away haven't been entirely certain on their reasoning.
'Obviously, the Trump administration and the war on diversity, equity and inclusion, I think, has affected some corporations' decisions about who they sponsor,' she told Business Insider.
'Some corporations are hedging their bets, not trying to inflame one side or the other and trying to just stay out of the fray.'
In January, Target received backlash for axing its DEI program and was subsequently banned from the Minneapolis Pride parade.
The retailer has long supported Twin Cities Pride, but after news broke of the company deciding to cut back on its policies, the pride organization's executive director banished the store and its $55,000 in funding.
The organization took to social media to share that the company's decision - announced in a newsletter in late January - was 'the breaking point,' even though Target was expected to sponsor the parade again this year.
The retail giant announced the drastic change just one week after Trump initiated orders to sever diversity, equity and inclusion policies across the nation.
'Throughout 2025, we'll be accelerating action in key areas and implementing changes with the goal of driving growth and staying in step with the evolving external landscape,' Target said.
As part of that change, the company said it planned to end its three-year DEI goals, conclude its Racial Equity Action and Change (REAC) initiatives, halt 'external diversity-focused surveys,' and rename its 'Superior Diversity' outreach to 'Supplier Engagement.'
Twin Cities Pride officially announced the 'bold decision' to axe the retailer on social media, stating that even though Target's absence at the parade 'means losing $50,000 in funding,' it had to be done.
The group urged the community to instead donate to Twin Cities Pride to help 'fill the gap' from the money lost.
'Your donation will ensure we can continue providing year-round programming, celebrating Pride with authenticity, and creating safe, inclusive spaces for all,' the post read.

If Rachel Reeves is to have any chance of making it to her autumn budget without U-turns or raising taxes, the improved economic forecasts of recent months need to come true. Missiles flying between Israel and Iran may destroy that hope. Things had been getting better for the Chancellor. Look at economic forecasts from the aftermath of Trump's 'liberation day', and there was a common theme when it came to Britain. Because of the nature of our economic relationship with America – as a massive exporter in services (we're their call centre) and with more or less balanced trade in goods – we would be shielded against the worst impacts of a trade slowdown. Global GDP growth would suffer, but the effects would not come to Britain. The real boon, if one was being positive, though was what effect these tariffs might have on inflation. While raising prices in the shops for American consumers, the view of the economic world was that for the UK they may in fact be disinflationary. That's because, as the consultancy firm Oxford Economics explained to their clients last month, dampening demand for commodities such as oil and gas would reduce the cost of products consumed in Britain. But all that was before the first Israeli missiles landed in Iran. A barrel of Brent crude now goes for over $70. On Monday it went for $65 – so there has been a 9 per cent in just five days. On Friday morning, it briefly spiked to nearly $80 in what was the sharpest price spike since Russia invaded Ukraine three years ago. Within hours of Reeves delivering what director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies Paul Johnson yesterday called an 'incomprehensible' spending review speech, economists were warning that tax rises in the autumn were becoming likely. Just a day later, a worse-than-expected GDP contraction turned likely into very likely. If oil prices continue climbing as the war escalates, tax rises could become certain. Some 20 billion barrels of oil pass through the Strait of Hormuz, or about 30 per cent of total global trade. So it's easy to see how if Tehran tried to attempt to close the Strait – as Iranian news reports it is considering – or even attacked a few tankers, the oil price would quickly head northwards again. Indeed the FT reported yesterday that the world's largest oil tanker company has stopped accepting new contracts to sail through the Strait. If oil prices do continue to rise – and some say disruption in the Strait could send the price over $100 a barrel – it would be mere days before Brits start paying the cost at the petrol forecourt. But oil supplies are crucial to much more than petrol and diesel and taken together, it's easy to see how the rate of inflation remains sticky or even begins to rise again. Given that the bond markets are keeping the cost of UK debt far higher than the Treasury has been used to – much more because of inflation worries and the after effects of money printing than is understood in Westminster – any signal that prices were rising again are not going to give them faith in Britain as a debtor. If that were to happen and gilt yields remain high, or even climb further, then Reeves could find herself in heaps of trouble. It surprises many City economists just how unequivocal the government has been about sticking to fiscal rules and indeed keeping Labour's manifesto promise not to 'raise taxes on working people' given how hard that is when Reeves only has £9.9 billion of headroom. Before her Spring Statement the chancellor talked of the economic challenges posed by a 'changing world'. Things in the middle east have a habit of spilling over and the world seems to be changing again. Could this once more be the excuse the chancellor has to reach for?

The City should ditch Pride celebrations and focus on its real job

The multi-coloured flags are not flying as prominently as they once did. The LinkedIn pages are no longer festooned with symbols and the company's X page no longer reminds everyone of its solidarity with the cause, while at the same time corporate donations to parades and fairs are collapsing. We are already halfway through Pride month, designed to promote the LGBTQ+ community, and it is already clear that the City and the wider corporate world is dialling down the celebrations. In reality, it is about time. Sure, we all agree that everyone should be treated equally regardless of their sexuality. But the City is in steep decline – and it should get back to deal-making before it is too late. The Pride celebrations are definitely quieter than usual among businesses this year. Law firms such as DLA Piper and Linklaters have all abandoned Pride logos on their LinkedIn pages, although in the past they were prominently displayed over the course of the month. Likewise, PwC has chosen not to update its logo and so have EY and Deloitte, while KPMG only did so after being contacted by this newspaper. Meanwhile, corporate funding for the events planned around the country is in free-fall, with corporate sponsorship of Pride events down by 50pc this year according to the UK Pride Organisers Network. There are reports of local events being cancelled after the contributions from companies dried up. Indeed, Bloomberg reported earlier this month that 75pc of organisers had seen a fall in corporate backing and that Pride in London, the largest event in the UK, was at risk as businesses politely backed away. One reason for that, of course, is US president Donald Trump. In the US, his administration has clamped down on diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) spending –in many cases forcing companies to abandon their support for liberal causes or face exclusion from government contracts and applying moral and financial pressure on others to scale back their commitments. The tactics might be rough but it is working. It is noticeable, for example, that many of the law firms that are no longer visibly backing the Pride celebrations have significant operations in the US. And since the internet does not respect national boundaries, they may well have decided that it is prudent – and law firms are always cautious – to scale back their commitments on this side of the Atlantic just in case. Trump may well have gone too far, as so often. And yet, it is surely right for the City to drop the high-profile support for Pride. Sure, we can all agree that staff should be treated with respect, and treated equally, regardless of their sexuality or gender. But the high-profile 'rainbow-washing' of Pride month – which even many gay people now feel has been hijacked by extreme activists – had also become a distraction from the real work of the Square Mile. In reality, the City is in a very perilous position right now. The initial public offering (IPO) market has collapsed and listings are moving elsewhere. We saw that confirmed earlier this month when Wise, one of the most consistently successful technology companies in Europe, decided to move its primary listing from London to New York, And the Chinese fast-fashion giant Shein – which may be controversial but is still a major company – decided to list its shares in Hong Kong instead of London. The number of companies listed in the UK's capital has fallen from 2,400 a decade ago to 1,600 now. There are virtually no new listings to replace them, with 18 listings last year raising a mere £770m, an 18pc fall on a year earlier, and plenty of companies are still giving up and accepting takeover offers. On current trends, the London market will go the way of the Liverpool and Manchester stock exchanges. It will be absorbed into New York in the same way that regional markets were absorbed into the City a hundred years ago. Meanwhile, the non-doms are all leaving following the ending of tax breaks in the UK. And much of the hedge fund and wealth management industries will go with them. The foreign exchange markets are still under threat from the European Union's determination to move trading and settlement within its own borders. Even pension funds may not be safe for much longer as Chancellor Rachel Reeves eyes them up as one of the few remaining pools of money she can raid, as she desperately searches around for more money to feed into a government machine with an insatiable appetite for more cash. Indeed, it is getting to the point where the City's only remaining major business is financing and rolling over the Government's vast and growing debts. Everything else is facing an accelerating decline. Those are the real challenges and a rainbow flag, no matter how well intentioned, does not do anything to fix any of them. In reality, the City has always been a place that tolerated just about anything except losing money, You could be gay, bi or straight, wear what you liked, dress anyway that made you feel comfortable, get up to anything you felt like at the weekend and spend your bonus money any way you chose to so long as the profit and loss account was in good shape at the end of the week. But the City no longer has the luxury of indulging fashionable causes or allowing resources to be wasted on issues that, while they may be important socially and some of the staff may personally feel very strongly about them, don't make any significant contribution to the growth of the business. In reality, Pride month was just a distraction from the real challenges of doing more deals, creating new products and opening up new markets. There won't be nearly so many high profile rainbow celebrations this month – and if we are being honest it is unlikely that anyone will miss them.

​So the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the US Army will not be a day that will live infamy. Nor will it be one many Americans will recall with pleasure, in part because it coincided with the birthday of President Trump, a man who generates some sort of veneration from his MAGA supporters and a reaction known as TDS, Trump Derangement Syndrome, from others. No vaccination is known that will prevent the onset of either disease, leaving those immune to both looking for a candidate. The President's decision to order out this parade enabled him to join the rather exclusive club of Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un, men he says he 'respects', 'likes' and calls 'a great leader', respectively. His initiation fee to become a member of this club comes to up to $45 million, with $16 million to be used to repair streets damaged by tanks. But, hey, it's a business expense, and so is charged off to the taxpayers. The significance of the event tells us a great deal about what is going on in America today. It has changed. This was not the first show of military hardware at parades in the nation's capital. It was not unusual for the military to be featured at Presidential inaugurations, and the parade ordered by President H.W. Bush in 1991 to celebrate the success of the war to drive Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait drew no protests, Arizona State University history professor Brooks Simpson told CBS News. Those days are gone, probably forever. But plus ça change, as they say. Some 34 years ago the New York Times's Anthony Lewis was not pleased by George H.W. Bush's decision to celebrate the success in driving Hussein from Kuwait, '… A celebratory parade would be inappropriate. Fireworks while Kurdish babies die?' Today's mainstream media are largely disapproving. The New York Times finds the event particularly inappropriate at a time when the President has taken charge of California's national guard, without the approval of Gavin Newsom, its governor and a leading candidate for the approbation of those Democrats who will nominate the party's candidate for the presidency in 2028. The differences between the American event and those in China, Russia and North Korea are more profound than the similarities. Whereas Trump faced a nationwide protest by millions of Americans free to make their voices heard, neither Xi, nor Putin, nor Kim were troubled by protesters, that being an occupation with lethal results in those countries. And the marchers were dissimilar in a way that speaks volumes about the difference between America and despotic regimes. The soldiers marching in Washington were volunteers, those participating in parades in China, Russia and North Korea are largely conscripts, with Russia's treatment of its soldiers made clear every day in Ukraine. The Americans interviewed on television, and some that I know, expressed pride in participating in the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the US Army that has kept us free after removing the British yoke in what we call our War for Independence.
