Hong Kong pair's ‘chronic' Asia Triathlon Cup swims leave coach with National Games fear

Cade Wright and Hilda Choi Yan-yin paid for delivering 'chronic' swimming performances, as the Hong Kong pair finished 10th and 12th, respectively, in the Asia Triathlon Cup in Dexing on Saturday.

Of the city's five men, Wong Tsz-to delivered the best effort to finish 12th.
While Wong and his colleagues are fighting to retain their Hong Kong Sports Institute full-time status, head coach Andrew Wright said the need for Cade Wright and Choi to improve in the water was growing urgent.
'Their swims were chronic – losing two minutes is poor,' coach Wright added.
'There's still time to fix it … if we can't, there's no point entering the National Games individual race [in November].'

The duo, who were racing in Dexing primarily to work on their swimming legs, emerged from the water more than two minutes down on the leading group.
Huang Anqi of China won the race in two hours, one minute and two seconds. Cade Wright came home in 2:06.52, while Choi finished in 2:07.40.

Hong Kong to invest up to an additional HK$30 million into National Games team

Hong Kong is investing up to HK$30 million (US$3.8 million) more in its National Games team as the city goes all out to optimise every aspect and ensure the smooth running of eight locally hosted events, according to the sports commissioner. Commissioner for Sports George Tsoi Kin-pan said on Saturday that the Hong Kong venues designated for the National Games had completed test runs and were ready, with the countdown to the 15th edition of the Games in November under way. 'Work in the coming three months will focus on optimising every aspect to ensure the events will be held smoothly,' he added, referring to minor issues such as how to ensure athletes had the most convenient access back to locker rooms after finishing their warm-ups. The Games, which run from November 9 to 21, will feature more than 400 events across 34 sports staged in the Greater Bay Area, which comprises Hong Kong, Macau and nine Guangdong province cities. Hong Kong will host eight sports – fencing, men's under-22 basketball, track cycling, golf, men's handball, rugby sevens, triathlon and beach volleyball. Choi also revealed at the forum that the government would allocate HK$20 million to HK$30 million to support athletes' expenses during the Games, such as logistics and accommodation. This is in addition to the HK$15 million already budgeted for their preparation, including training.

Hong Kong public urged to ‘come and cheer' city to National Games glory

Hongkongers have been urged to unite behind the city's athletes and 'cheer them to greatness' in this year's National Games. Eight events are being staged in the city as it jointly hosts the 15th edition of the Games along with Guangdong and Macau. With excitement mounting as the November 9 start date speeds into view, leading figures from cycling and triathlon said fervent support from the locals would 'make all the difference' in their hunt for medals. More than 300,000 tickets are set to be released for the Hong Kong-based competitions, with the first wave of sales beginning on August 28. Track cycling will be held at Hong Kong Velodrome from November 13 to 17. Herve Dagorne, the city team's cycling head coach, called it a unique opportunity. Hong Kong cycling's Vincent Lau ready to be National Games leader after coach demand

As someone who performs the grunt work for his professional team, Vincent Lau Wan-yau has needed a seismic mindset shift to become the spearhead of Hong Kong's National Games road cycling glory bid. Lau, a 2022 Asian Games medallist and Paris 2024 Olympian, is a domestique for Roojai Insurance, the Thai team he joined last year. 'I transport bidons [water bottles] to my teammates [from team car], help control the peloton, and spend time at the front to do lead outs and take the wind,' Lau said. 'It's giving me more experience. We have to make the race; be aggressive and attentive. With Hong Kong, we're not so [prominent] in races.' After Lau recently relinquished his Hong Kong time trial title to Chu Tsun-wai, head coach Herve Dagorne said: 'I don't see the anger in him, sometimes, I want to see more willing'.
