S.W.A.T. EXILES: Can Someone Make the Spinoff's Premise Make Sense…?

S.W.A.T. EXILES: Can Someone Make the Spinoff's Premise Make Sense…?

Yahoo24-05-2025

The S.W.A.T. EXILES spinoff news landed smack dab in the middle of my six-day vacation, so I only recently got around to getting eyes on and processing exactly what it is.
Having now done so, and as a 'charter subscriber' to the eight-season CBS reboot that twice defied cancellation, I have questions.

S.W.A.T. Spinoff Ordered to Series, With Shemar Moore Returning Alongside 'New Generation of Characters'
First off, make no mistake, I commend the mission of the spinoff, to not only keep the S.W.A.T. brand alive but 'preserv[e] jobs for the 200-person local production crew who have been instrumental to the success of the original series for the last eight seasons,' as the press release put it.
Because as 'Well, that's show business!' as a TV show's cancellation may be, it does threaten the livelihood of the many crew members who count on the steady gig. Especially when even a 'steady' gig these days translates to fewer episodes (and thus fewer weeks of work, fewer paychecks) per season.
Now… all that said… does the premise make a lick of sense to anyone?
In this spin-off of the hit series, after a high-profile mission goes sideways, Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson (played by Shemar Moore) is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental SWAT unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits. Hondo must bridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is.
From the S.W.A.T. EXILES press release
Let's take it piece by piece…..
S.W.A.T. over eight seasons has dealt with many high-profile missions, and while the team's methods are sometimes called into question or ruffle a politician's feathers, an op has never quite 'gone sideways.' What does that mean here? Was there preventable loss of civilian life? Or was it a PR fiasco, where, say, 20-Squad was assigned to protect a government VIP… but didn't?
So, not only was Hondo not part of the mission that went 'sideways,' he was in 'forced retirement' at the time.
Forced retirement? For Hondo?? He was always a veritable Boy Scout, one of the straightest shooters on the team. After the several times that Hondo has tested politicians' patience, I can't imagine what act would subject him to forced retirement. And as far as half-assed Internet research can tell me, there is no mandatory retirement age for SWAT. (Shemar Moore appears to be around 55.)
It sounds like after the 'sideways' mission, SWAT as a whole is closer than ever to being disbanded — which in and of itself seems improbable, as you need that amped-up line of policing for the dicier situations. But even if you buy into SWAT's threatened dissolution, who up the food chain would sign off on an 'experimental' unit? Seems reckless. Especially when it is…
This is where the synopsis really lost me.
So, the SWAT program is hanging on by the thinnest of threads after a team of well-trained, veteran officers couldn't keep a high-profile mission from going damningly 'sideways.' And your 'last-chance, experimental' solution is to put Hondo in charge of 'untested, unpredictable' recruits? After multiple instances (including in the last two finales!) where Hicks and Hondo couldn't find anyone up to snuff to fill a vacant slot?
Tapping untested, unpredictable officers to form a squad that will be extra-averse to 'sideways' missions… doesn't math.
Again, if a well-trained 20-Squad couldn't avoid one (1) 'sideways' mission, who would expect a collection of misfit toys armed with big guns to fare at all better?
And we haven't even gotten into the whole 'culture clash of Gen X versus Gen Z,' as Sony Pictures TV Studios chief Katherine Pope described the Hondo vs. recruits dynamic to Variety. 'Where Hondo is all about duty, hierarchy and chain of command,' Pope said, 'the Gen Zers are a little more like, 'I might need to take a mental health day. I want to talk about it. I want to understand it.''
Of course, the question about (other than where it will air/stream Stateside) is: 'Where are Deacon, Tan et al?' Were they part of the team whose mission went sideways, and are now persona non grata?
I 'get' that, financially, the spinoff works because you're shedding several eight-season salaries, and in turn hiring some fresh blood on the cheap. But for Hondo to tackle this new job without ever engaging with any old pals will be conspicuous. (Like, he and his new team must report to someone; will it not be Hicks?)
Hopefully, we can take heart in something else that Sony TV's Pope said — that while the creative team is 'still putting it all together,' 'I think you can expect some of your favorites to be a part of it in some way.'
What do you think of the idea?

Nicolas Cage Thriller ‘The Surfer' Arrives On Streaming This Week

Nicolas Cage in "The Surfer." The Surfer — an acclaimed psychological thriller starring Nicolas Cage — is new on digital streaming this week. Directed by Lorcan Finnegan, The Surfer opened in theaters in limited release on May 2. The official summary for the film reads, 'A man (Cage) returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son (Finn Little). But his desire to hit the waves is thwarted by a group of locals whose mantra is, 'Don't live here, don't surf here.' "Humiliated and angry, the man is drawn into a conflict that keeps rising in concert with the punishing heat of the summer and pushes him to his breaking point.' Rated R, The Surfer also stars Julian McMahon, Nic Cassim, Miranda Tapsell, Alexander Bertrand and Justin Rosniak. The Surfer is expected to arrive on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Friday, June 6, per When to Stream. While the streaming tracker is typically accurate with its PVOD reports, it noted that The Surfer's studio, Roadside Attractions, and distributor, Lionsgate, have not announced or confirmed the release date of the film and it is subject to change. The Surfer will be available on such digital platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video and YouTube. The film will be available for digital purchase for $14.99 and since digital rentals are typically $5 less, viewers can expect to rent the film for $9.99 for 48 hours. In an interview with Nerdist prior to the release of The Surfer, Nicolas Cage said one of the elements of the film that piqued his interest was its unique story. 'When I read this script, I thought, 'Well, this is different. This is weird. This is the kind of story I aspire to write.' It was a non-linear narrative. I couldn't believe the whole thing took place on a beach in a parking lot. That was new,' Cage told Nerdist. 'And the more I do this, the more I want to find expressions in cinema that are unlike other things that we kind of become bored with. I wanted to find a new way of storytelling.' The Surfer has earned $1.3 million from North American theaters and more than $800,000 internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $2.1 million to date. Production budget information for The Surfer was not disclosed. The Surfer earned a collective 86% 'fresh' rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 154 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus reads, 'Nicolas Cage expertly rides the waves of toxic masculinity in this sand-filled arena of torment.' Audiences on RT thought differently of The Surfer, though, giving the film a 'rotten' 46% Popcornmeter score based on 250-plus verified user ratings. The Surfer, starring Nicolas Cage, is expected to arrive on PVOD on Friday.

‘The Phoenician Scheme' Lands Top Limited Opening Of 2025

Wes Anderson's is now the top-grossing limited opening of the year with an estimated $570,000 this weekend at just six locations in New York and Los Angeles for a per-theater average of $95K. The Focus Features' film expands to 1,500 screens next weekend. The film unseats A24's Friendship, which kicked the indie box into high gear a few weeks ago with a great $445K limited opening and $75K per-theater opening for Andrew DeYoung's feature debut starring comedian Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd. More from Deadline 'The Phoenician Scheme' Review: Benicio Del Toro Hilariously Dominates Wes Anderson's Latest All-Star Wes Anderson Movie – Cannes Film Festival 'The Phoenician Scheme' Cannes Red Carpet Photos: Wes Anderson, Mia Threapleton, Benicio del Toro, Bill Murray, Michael Cera, & More Wes Anderson's 'The Phoenician Scheme' Tees Up Strong Indie Weekend With Angelika Film Center Takeover - Specialty Preview The Phoenician Scheme, written by Anderson and Roman Coppola, stars Benicio del Toro as a family patriarch and business titan beset by rivals and assassins, and Mia Threapleton as his daughter, a nun, whom he wants to inherit it all. Michael Cera, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Riz Ahmed, Mathieu Amalric, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Richard Ayoade, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis, and Benedict Cumberbatch also star in the pic, which is coming off its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this month. The Phoenician Scheme is the third major collaboration of Focus, Anderson and Indian Paintbrush, who also partnered on Anderson's most recent feature Asteroid City (2023) as well Moonrise Kingdom (2012). It was produced by Anderson for his American Empirical Pictures banner alongside longtime collaborators Steven Rales of Indian Paintbrush, Jeremy Dawson and John Peet. The movie was filmed in Germany in association with Studio Babelsberg. Asteroid City's PTA of $132K was the biggest in years, and The Grand Budapest Hotel in 2014 a record-setter at $200K. The latter ended up scoring nine Oscar nominations including Best Picture and winning four. Focus took over the Angelika Film Center in New York this weekend with Phoenician Scheme on all six screens, a jazz band and movie-themed merchandise and activations in the lobby and concessions – reflected in higher ticket prices — $30 for standard and $60 for premium. NYC's Alamo Brooklyn and AMC Lincoln Square and AMC's The Grove, Century City and Burbank in Los Angeles are other opening theaters. Other new openings: IFC Films debuted UK period thiller to $130K at 412 theaters, and Music Box Fims opened Jonathan Millet's feature debut from Cannes 2024 with French-Tunisian star Adam Bessa at four locations to $5,600. Holdover: Sony Pictures Classics clocked $561K on 526 screens in week 2 (up from 61 last week) for a cume of $977.500. Event cinema had a terrific weekend with the final Met: transmission of the 2024–2025 season, Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia, grossing $906K at about 800 cinemas in North America. Fathom distributes in most markets. Trafalgar had a doubleheader, with Saturday's live worldwide broadcast of j-hope tour — the BTS solo star's concert from Osaka — grossing $789K at 631 screens in North America. The UK-based distributor's collaboration with Hasbro was also out with globally including 428 venues in North America that grossed $420K for Friday and Saturday.
