‘S.W.A.T.' Spinoff Could Now Feature Possible Cast Returns — Besides Shemar Moore — Amid Backlash
Despite only announcing Shemar Moore as a returning cast member, it turns out the S.W.A.T spinoff could feature more surprise appearances from fan-favorite characters. Sony Pictures TV President Katherine Pope weighed in on the possibility earlier this month after S.W.A.T Exiles was announced, telling Variety, "There is a clear world that we're exploring here. We're still putting it all together, but for sure, I think you can expect some of your favorites to be a part of it in some way." Pope noted that the shows now exist in their own "universe" while Exiles is "a bit of a take on the culture generation clash of Gen X versus Gen Z." "Where Hondo is all about duty, hierarchy and chain of command, the Gen Zers are a little more like, 'I might need to take a mental health day. I want to talk about it. I want to understand it,'" Pope teased about the upcoming series. "It's kind of our take on Top Gun Maverick." Why Did Shemar Moore Receive Backlash for 'S.W.A.T.' Spinoff? Surprising Cast Drama Explained Pope continued: "How do we build bridges around not just generational divides, but all forms of divide? There's a lot of division going on in our world. If we just took some time to listen and to try and be part of a team, and what that really means, it would probably be better for all of us." S.W.A.T. premiered in 2017 and aired for six seasons before CBS planned to end its run with season 7. The network ultimately reversed that decision and S.W.A.T. returned for two more seasons, but CBS officially canceled the series while season 8 was airing in March 2025. Earlier this month, S.W.A.T.'s series finale aired and just two days later Sony Pictures Television announced a spinoff starring Moore, 55, and a new cast. The decision received backlash since Jay Harrington, David Lim, Patrick St. Esprit, Anna Enger Ritch, Annie Ilonzeh and Niko Pepaj also took part in efforts to revive the series. Moore stood by the decision, saying in an Instagram video, 'Nobody likes change. I understand that. I get it 100 percent. But without change, you can't grow. You can't win without taking your lumps. It ain't easy making it in the game of Hollywood. It ain't. TV shows don't last eight years anymore. The game has changed. But S.W.A.T. Exiles, baby! S.W.A.T. Exiles. Bigger, bolder. S.W.A.T. on steroids." Which 'S.W.A.T.' Stars Are — And Aren't — Returning for Surprise Spinoff After Multiple Cancellations? He continued: 'I'm not saying I'm Tom Brady, but I'm the Tom Brady of S.W.A.T. That's not arrogant. That's not ego. It's a fact. I'm the quarterback. I'm Shemar Moore a.k.a Hondo. But I had a squad. A strong squad. A family. A team. And I would be remiss If I didn't say out loud to the world and to them — because I know they're watching this — I love you. I respect you. I appreciate you.' Lim, 41, who has been with the show since season 1, was the first cast member to officially break his silence on the drama. "I'd be lying if I said the rollout of the new spinoff didn't sting. It was tough to see it announced just two days after our finale — with no mention of the cast who helped build S.W.A.T. from day one," he wrote via Instagram on Wednesday, May 28. "After eight incredible seasons, it felt like we were brushed aside when there could've been a moment of reflection and recognition — for the people who built this show, and for the impact it had on so many."

Pittsburgh Zoo welcomes 3 adorable armadillo pups
The Pittsburgh Zoo is welcoming three adorable baby nine-banded armadillo pups. The zoo on social media shared a video of Boulder, Geode and Onyx. The three pups were born with soft leathery skin that hardens within a few weeks. The video shows the zoo's education team caring for the pups as they transform from little pink babies. The armadillos will join the zoo's other animal ambassadors, which visitors can see through education programming, outreach, special visits and select wild encounters. The nine-banded armadillo isn't native to North America, but the National Park Service says they can be found all over the southern states, and their range is slowly expanding north, with some found as far as Illinois. Armadillos migrated across the Rio Grande in the mid-1880s and merged with another population that was established in Florida. When you imagine an armadillo, you may picture it curling up in a ball. But the nine-banded armadillo actually can't. Instead, it jumps about three feet up in the air, and since it can't control which direction it goes, the unpredictability scares off predators, the National Park Service explains. The three nine-banded armadillo pups aren't the only recent new arrivals at the zoo. Hondo, an 8-year-old African lion from the Idaho Falls Zoo, is making a home in Pittsburgh. The hope is that he'll be a companion for lionesses Abana and Scarlett. Those two came to the zoo in 2019 with Kit, who died in 2023.

S.W.A.T. EXILES: Can Someone Make the Spinoff's Premise Make Sense…?
The S.W.A.T. EXILES spinoff news landed smack dab in the middle of my six-day vacation, so I only recently got around to getting eyes on and processing exactly what it is. Having now done so, and as a 'charter subscriber' to the eight-season CBS reboot that twice defied cancellation, I have questions. More from TVLine Shemar Moore: It's 'Bittersweet' Doing S.W.A.T. Spinoff Without OG Cast, 'But I'm the Tom Brady of S.W.A.T. It's a Fact' 'S.W.A.T. Universe Was Dead for Less Than 48 Hours': Shemar Moore and EP Celebrate EXILES Spinoff News S.W.A.T. Spinoff Ordered to Series, With Shemar Moore Returning Alongside 'New Generation of Characters' First off, make no mistake, I commend the mission of the spinoff, to not only keep the S.W.A.T. brand alive but 'preserv[e] jobs for the 200-person local production crew who have been instrumental to the success of the original series for the last eight seasons,' as the press release put it. Because as 'Well, that's show business!' as a TV show's cancellation may be, it does threaten the livelihood of the many crew members who count on the steady gig. Especially when even a 'steady' gig these days translates to fewer episodes (and thus fewer weeks of work, fewer paychecks) per season. Now… all that said… does the premise make a lick of sense to anyone? In this spin-off of the hit series, after a high-profile mission goes sideways, Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson (played by Shemar Moore) is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental SWAT unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits. Hondo must bridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is. From the S.W.A.T. EXILES press release Let's take it piece by piece….. S.W.A.T. over eight seasons has dealt with many high-profile missions, and while the team's methods are sometimes called into question or ruffle a politician's feathers, an op has never quite 'gone sideways.' What does that mean here? Was there preventable loss of civilian life? Or was it a PR fiasco, where, say, 20-Squad was assigned to protect a government VIP… but didn't? So, not only was Hondo not part of the mission that went 'sideways,' he was in 'forced retirement' at the time. Forced retirement? For Hondo?? He was always a veritable Boy Scout, one of the straightest shooters on the team. After the several times that Hondo has tested politicians' patience, I can't imagine what act would subject him to forced retirement. And as far as half-assed Internet research can tell me, there is no mandatory retirement age for SWAT. (Shemar Moore appears to be around 55.) It sounds like after the 'sideways' mission, SWAT as a whole is closer than ever to being disbanded — which in and of itself seems improbable, as you need that amped-up line of policing for the dicier situations. But even if you buy into SWAT's threatened dissolution, who up the food chain would sign off on an 'experimental' unit? Seems reckless. Especially when it is… This is where the synopsis really lost me. So, the SWAT program is hanging on by the thinnest of threads after a team of well-trained, veteran officers couldn't keep a high-profile mission from going damningly 'sideways.' And your 'last-chance, experimental' solution is to put Hondo in charge of 'untested, unpredictable' recruits? After multiple instances (including in the last two finales!) where Hicks and Hondo couldn't find anyone up to snuff to fill a vacant slot? Tapping untested, unpredictable officers to form a squad that will be extra-averse to 'sideways' missions… doesn't math. Again, if a well-trained 20-Squad couldn't avoid one (1) 'sideways' mission, who would expect a collection of misfit toys armed with big guns to fare at all better? And we haven't even gotten into the whole 'culture clash of Gen X versus Gen Z,' as Sony Pictures TV Studios chief Katherine Pope described the Hondo vs. recruits dynamic to Variety. 'Where Hondo is all about duty, hierarchy and chain of command,' Pope said, 'the Gen Zers are a little more like, 'I might need to take a mental health day. I want to talk about it. I want to understand it.'' Of course, the question about (other than where it will air/stream Stateside) is: 'Where are Deacon, Tan et al?' Were they part of the team whose mission went sideways, and are now persona non grata? I 'get' that, financially, the spinoff works because you're shedding several eight-season salaries, and in turn hiring some fresh blood on the cheap. But for Hondo to tackle this new job without ever engaging with any old pals will be conspicuous. (Like, he and his new team must report to someone; will it not be Hicks?) Hopefully, we can take heart in something else that Sony TV's Pope said — that while the creative team is 'still putting it all together,' 'I think you can expect some of your favorites to be a part of it in some way.' Pittsburgh zoo welcomes new male lion Hondo
The Pittsburgh Zoo has a new African lion, and so far, he's been a hit with the ladies. The zoo on Tuesday announced that 8-year-old Hondo has arrived from the Idaho Falls Zoo. The hope is that he'll be a companion for lionesses Abana and Scarlett. The females came to the zoo in 2019 with Kit, who died in 2023. The zoo said it had a few choices, but Hondo's "robust" genes and experience living with females made him "the most eligible bachelor." (Photo Credit: Paul A Selvaggio) How Hondo will join the pride The zoo said lions are social animals with a unique pride structure, and introducing a lion to an existing pride isn't easy, especially because females take longer to accept a new member. It could take anywhere from three months to five years, but so far, the zoo says it's looking pretty good for Hondo. "There were lots of matches, but Hondo was the best fit," curator of mammals Kelsey Forbes said in a news release. "He is good with females having lived with his mother and two younger sisters. Here in Pittsburgh so far, Hondo is a perfect gentleman, and the ladies are obsessed with him." As Hondo gets used to his new home and future pride-mates, the zoo says he and the lionesses will alternate on view in their outdoor habitat. Initial signs of a bond include behaviors that look friendly like grooming and head rubbing, but some gestures like swatting, hissing and biting may be alarming to guests. The zoo says it's all part of the process. Lions also typically call at sunrise and sunset, and the zoo says Scarlett and Abana are already responding to Hondo's call. As for whether the pride will expand to include some little lion cubs, Forbes says, "That remains up to them!"
