Pittsburgh zoo welcomes new male lion Hondo
The Pittsburgh Zoo has a new African lion, and so far, he's been a hit with the ladies.
The zoo on Tuesday announced that 8-year-old Hondo has arrived from the Idaho Falls Zoo. The hope is that he'll be a companion for lionesses Abana and Scarlett. The females came to the zoo in 2019 with Kit, who died in 2023.
The zoo said it had a few choices, but Hondo's "robust" genes and experience living with females made him "the most eligible bachelor."

How Hondo will join the pride
The zoo said lions are social animals with a unique pride structure, and introducing a lion to an existing pride isn't easy, especially because females take longer to accept a new member. It could take anywhere from three months to five years, but so far, the zoo says it's looking pretty good for Hondo.
"There were lots of matches, but Hondo was the best fit," curator of mammals Kelsey Forbes said in a news release. "He is good with females having lived with his mother and two younger sisters. Here in Pittsburgh so far, Hondo is a perfect gentleman, and the ladies are obsessed with him."
As Hondo gets used to his new home and future pride-mates, the zoo says he and the lionesses will alternate on view in their outdoor habitat. Initial signs of a bond include behaviors that look friendly like grooming and head rubbing, but some gestures like swatting, hissing and biting may be alarming to guests. The zoo says it's all part of the process.
Lions also typically call at sunrise and sunset, and the zoo says Scarlett and Abana are already responding to Hondo's call.
As for whether the pride will expand to include some little lion cubs, Forbes says, "That remains up to them!"

Gonzalez and Williams homer as Miami takes Hattiesburg Regional 5-4 over Southern Miss
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — Dorian Gonzalez Jr. and Derek Williams hit home runs and Miami won the Hattiesburg Regional with a 5-4 decision over Southern Mississippi on Monday night. The Hurricanes go to the best-of-three Louisville Super Regional with a College World Series berth on the line. The Cardinals won the Nashville Regional hosted by No. 1 overall seed Vanderbilt. Southern Mississippi, which lost its regional opener to Columbia 11-4, got revenge for that game with an 8-1 win and Sunday night topped Miami 17-6 to force the deciding game. Miami (34-25) had nine hits and they were bunched well. Williams had a solo home run in the first inning. In the fifth, after a two-out single by Michael Torres, Jake Ogden had an RBI double and Max Galvin drove Ogden home with a single to make it 3-1. Gonzalez had his home run leading off the sixth and then Torres had a two-out single for a 5-1 lead. Matthew Russo had a run-scoring single in the fourth to tie the game and Tucker Stockman drove in a run in the seventh for the Golden Eagles (47-16). Carson Paetow hit a two-run, two-out homer in the ninth before Brian Walters got the last out for his 10th save. Will Smith (3-0) pitched the middle three innings for the win. 2025 NCAA baseball Super Regionals set: What are the most intriguing matchups?

Top seed Vanderbilt and No. 2 seed Texas were both eliminated on Sunday, but five of the six other top-eight national seeds advanced and will serve as hosts next weekend. Advertisement The story on Monday night was Murray State, which became the 10th No. 4 seed to advance to the Super Regionals since the current format was instituted in 1999. The Racers, the champions of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament, held on for a 12-11 win over Ole Miss in Game 7 of the Oxford Regional on Monday night. Ole Miss trimmed a 12-3 deficit to 12-11 with five runs in the seventh and three in the eighth but went down quietly in the ninth. Little Rock, one of two teams in the field with a losing record, almost became a second No. 4 seed to advance, but the Trojans lost to LSU in the Baton Rouge Regional championship game. Arkansas counters with star shortstop Wehiwa Aloy, outfielder Charles Davalan and pitchers Gage Wood and Zach Root. It's a talent bonanza. And neither team had an easy path to get here. After Oregon State's opening home loss, the Beavers' chances were shaky, but OSU responded by scoring 43 (43!) runs in its final three Regional games. FSU needed some magic of its own to pull off a late-game comeback against Mississippi State and advance to its 19th (19th!) Super Regional, the most of any program in the country. Florida State has one of the top prospects in the country in junior left-hander Jamie Arnold. The Beavers boast one of the best freshmen in the nation in right-hander Dax Whitney. Though they aren't likely to start the same game — Arnold should be the Game 1 guy while Whitney is likely for Game 2 — we are probably in for a masterclass in pitching. — Schnell This battle of the four-letter state schools is a historical mismatch. The Roadrunners are in the NCAA postseason for the first time since 2013 — which happens to be the year that the Bruins last qualified for the College World Series. UCLA won it all 12 years ago. Coach John Savage, in his 21st season, aims to take a fourth UCLA team to Omaha. But UTSA will not be intimidated by the iconic jersey or the setting after it rolled Texas twice en route to sweeping the Austin Regional. It was one of several black eyes for the SEC in the opening weekend of the tournament.
