Eastern trying to get more PBA Commissioner's Cup matches played in Hong Kong
Hong Kong Eastern will continue to play in the East Asia Super League (EASL) next season despite failing to win the city's local basketball title this year.
League officials confirmed Eastern's participation was contractually bound, and team officials said they could again play on three fronts next season – locally, in the EASL and in the Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner's Cup – despite being overstretched and facing schedule clashes.
'We have contracts with both [overseas] leagues, so chances are we are going to play,' said Wilson Choi Fong-yue, team leader of Eastern.
However, Choi added, the issue was whether they could play more matches at home instead of playing all their matches away.
'We already had our home matches in EASL this season, so that wasn't a problem,' Choi said. 'The question is whether we can bring, say, half of the [Commissioner's Cup regular season] matches to Hong Kong. 'Our original aim in playing in these regional competitions was to give the sport in the city a push, to let our young, home-grown players play more on home soil. I'm not sure what the point is if we have to play the entire season in the Philippines.'

Hong Kong striker ignoring selection controversy, aiming to make history against India
Manuel Bleda said he was ignoring outside noise over his Hong Kong call-up as the striker sets his sights on 'making history' when the city team welcome India to Kai Tak Stadium on Tuesday. Advertisement The Spain-born player made a belated international debut in Thursday's 0-0 draw with Nepal. When he received his passport in February 2024, Bleda was recovering from the anterior cruciate ligament tear he suffered the previous pre-season. A May 2024 comeback proved to be a false start, and he would have to wait until March this year for his genuine return to action. However, Bleda's selection for Hong Kong despite not scoring in eight appearances for his club team Eastern – at the expense of 18-goal BC Rangers striker Lau Chi-lok – stoked the ire of supporters. Advertisement 'For me, it's no problem – I don't decide who comes and who does not; that is the coach's job,' Bleda said.

But Baffoe, the 32-year-old Eastern striker who had just been crowned Hong Kong Footballer of the Year, netted three goals in five minutes from the 80th minute to secure a 3-1 comeback for Eastern. This is the club's seventh FA Cup win in its history.

Eastern win Hong Kong FA Cup after brilliant Noah Baffoe hat-trick downs Rangers
Noah Baffoe bagged a brilliant four-minute hat-trick as Eastern retained the Hong Kong FA Cup on Saturday, beating BC Rangers 3-1 at Mong Kok Stadium. Advertisement Leading 1-0 with 10 minutes remaining, after Lau Chi-lok's early strike, Rangers looked on course to claim the trophy for the first time since 1995. But a previously subdued Baffoe sprang to life with time running out, when he ran onto a pass behind Rangers' defence to squeeze a shot past the onrushing Oleksii Shliakotin. If that was a piece of predatory expertise from Baffoe, what the Spaniard did next was coated with genius. After gathering a pass from substitute Timmy Ma Hei-wai, Baffoe turned to guide a 25-yard chip beyond the helpless 6ft 5in goalkeeper Shliakotin. Only two more minutes had elapsed when Baffoe, crowned Hong Kong footballer of the year on Wednesday, chased down a pass over the top from Clement Benhaddouche and thumped a bouncing ball inside the left post. It was his 35th goal of the season and seventh in three FA Cup matches. Advertisement The victory for Eastern added to their success in the Senior Shield. It also secured Hong Kong's second Asian Champions League Two spot, alongside league champions Tai Po, for next season, and HK$350,000 (US$45,000) in prize money.
