Phone feature helps rescue family lost in Red River Gorge
RED RIVER GORGE, Ky. (FOX 56) — At 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wolfe County Search and Rescue crews were alerted that a family of three was lost in the Red River Gorge, including a small child.
Authorities said the family went out to hike Tower Rock Trail but eventually got lost after crossing over to a different trail.
The family used the Apple Emergency SOS feature, which provided a set of coordinates to help rescuers locate the family about 2.5 miles from the Bison trailhead.
'In our case, Wolfe County Search and Rescue went right to their location, and they were back to safety in roughly an hour and a half,' Kevin Osbourn, with the rescue team, said.

He said the family was cold but otherwise okay.
The team gets called out for rescues in the Gorge 60-70 times a year. Osbourn said it's important for hikers to become familiar with this phone feature.
iPhone Emergency SOS via satellite allows people with the iPhone 14 and later to connect and get help when a cellular signal is unavailable.
If you do not have an iPhone, Osbourn said there are other precautions to take.

'Tell somebody, tell a loved one or a friend, 'Hey I'm going into the woods; this is the time,'' Osbourn said.
Sandy Moore and her family made the spring break trip to the gorge from Ohio.The family completed a short hike and said they make sure to follow safety measures, like bringing snacks and doing research ahead of time.
'The right footwear is good, so we definitely want to make sure we either have hiking shoes or shoes with good treads and just take it slow and steady,' Moore said.
Search and rescue crews encourage people not to shy away from bringing a traditional map with them when going hiking.

Gila National Forest closes part of its land due to Trout Fire
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Gila National Forest has issued a public safety closure order for part of its land and recreation sites threatened by the Trout Fire that is burning north of Silver City. The closure area is south and west of New Mexico Highway 35, north of Allie Canyon Trail, Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, Signal Peak Trail, and Tadpole Ridge Trail, and east of Sheep Corral Canyon Trail and Forest Road 4083V in the Sheep Corral area, the Gila National Forest said. The fire was estimated to be 2,170 acres at 0 percent containment as of Friday morning, June 13. Trout Fire burning north of Silver City at 2K acres, 0% containment All National Forest system lands within the closure area are closed to public entry, including developed recreation sites along New Mexico Highway 35 including Allie Canyon Trailhead, Sapillo Continental Divide National Scenic Trail Trailhead, Railroad Canyon Trailhead, Pictograph Canyon Trailhead, Purgatory Chasm Trailhead, Sapillo Group Campground, Mesa Campground, Upper End Campground, Lake Roberts Day Use Area, Lake Roberts Picnic Area, Vista Ruins Picnic Area, and the Lake Roberts Recreation Area. Additionally, Grant County Sheriff's Office issued a 'Go' evacuation order for private properties along the western end of New Mexico Highway 35, from Sapillo Campground west to the Highway 15/35 intersection, on both sides of the highway. (WHTM) — Michelin stars are awarded only to restaurants that display the epitome of culinary excellence through their cooking. Cities like Philadelphia are known for their vibrant food scenes, but no Pennsylvania restaurants have a Michelin star. The Michelin Guide lists restaurants awarded a Michelin star, one of the highest culinary achievements a restaurant can earn. Subscribe Now However, this could soon change. In May, the MICHELIN Guide announced it would be coming to Philadelphia and Boston for its newly minted MICHELIN Guide Northeast Cities edition. 'We are thrilled for Boston and Philadelphia to join the MICHELIN Guide Northeast Cities as both are premier destinations for gourmets to experience a rich diversity of cuisine and culinary history,' said Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guides. 'The local passion, talent and camaraderie in both Boston and Philadelphia is evident in their restaurant communities and the anonymous Inspectors look forward to spotlighting their unique experiences in both cities.' The announcement said that Michelin Inspectors are already in the field, making reservations and hunting down hidden gems and local favorites. Michelin added that it won't be long before Pennsylvanians start seeing familiar restaurants in the famed guide. Pennsylvania fried chicken eatery announces expansion According to Michelin, the selection process is determined by anonymous inspectors, who are full-time employees who are former restaurant and hospitality professionals. Several inspectors must eat at each restaurant before coming to a final decision. A Michelin star is awarded to the restaurant's food on the plate and nothing else, according to Michelin.
