Southern Kentucky college to become a university: Why leaders made the decision
COLUMBIA, Ky. (FOX 56) — From humble beginnings in 1903 as a training school for Vanderbilt University, Lindsey Wilson College is getting a name change over 120 years later. The unanimous decision was made on Thursday afternoon by the Board of Trustees, according to a news release. University leaders said the change was necessary because the school is far more dynamic than it was even 10 years ago. 'I've always been convinced that the best teaching and learning in the world happens at small, private colleges across the United States,' said President William T. Luckey Jr, who is reportedly the longest-serving college or university president in Kentucky higher education and has been Lindsey Wilson's eighth president since 1998. 'That is why this move does not change our mission, who we serve or what we do, but rather it reflects the dynamic nature of who we have become.' The alumni board and SGA both unanimously endorsed the change, and the Lindsey Wilson faculty voted for the change 77 to 2 with 10 abstentions. 'There is something unique and special that's part of our institutional DNA and has been since 1903,' President Luckey said. 'We are a universe of one with an institutional culture that cannot be replicated or duplicated.' Lindsey Wilson SGA President Zachariah Lawson said that he and his fellow students are excited about the change, especially after meeting with Luckey earlier this school year to discuss it. Former inmate set to lead new re-entry program at the Jessamine County Detention Center
NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (FOX 56) — A new role at the Jessamine County Detention Center is giving inmates a roadmap to rebuild. The man leading that effort knows the struggle firsthand. For years, Robert Barbosa lived a life consumed by addiction. It landed him in jail 35 times by the age of 42. 'It wasn't an easy ride,' said Barbosa. 'I was coming off drugs and real heavy. I had some mishaps happen while in this place, and, you know, the same judge that started locking me up when I was 18, Judge Doherty, was the same judge that I went in front of this time.' He said, at the time, it felt like a cycle that would never end, but others around him believed he could break it. So much potential,'' said Jessamine County Jailer Jon Sallee. 'And it was awesome to see his transition.' Barbosa said he was eventually given an ultimatum: If he didn't turn his life around, he was told he might never see his children again. 'Not having a father in my life, I knew the importance of me needing one in my life,' said Barbosa. 'And if I needed one, my kids needed one as well. And so, that family piece was everything to me.' A judge offered him an opportunity to enter a long-term recovery program, and he never looked back. 'If we can give them a lens to look through outside of these walls and help guide them, I think that we'll have a lot of success stories,' said Barbosa. Barbosa is now returning to the Jessamine County Detention Center, this time on the other side as a re-entry coordinator. It's a position dedicated to helping inmates attain a future unchained. He said it will be an honor serving the place and people that helped him achieve the life he always dreamed of. 'So glad that I was able to scoop you up and bring you in here. And you know, use you as a vessel to help these guys and girls out.' Barbosa will officially start his new job in June. Phone feature helps rescue family lost in Red River Gorge
RED RIVER GORGE, Ky. (FOX 56) — At 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wolfe County Search and Rescue crews were alerted that a family of three was lost in the Red River Gorge, including a small child. Authorities said the family went out to hike Tower Rock Trail but eventually got lost after crossing over to a different trail. The family used the Apple Emergency SOS feature, which provided a set of coordinates to help rescuers locate the family about 2.5 miles from the Bison trailhead. 'In our case, Wolfe County Search and Rescue went right to their location, and they were back to safety in roughly an hour and a half,' Kevin Osbourn, with the rescue team, said.
