Punjab: AAP's Sikhya model failed in edu sector: Balbir Sidhu
Senior Congress leader and former Punjab health minister Balbir Singh Sidhu on Thursday criticised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led government in Punjab, accusing it of 'hollow governance' and failed promises in the education sector.
Sidhu claimed that the much-hyped Sikhya model promoted by the AAP government was far from reality on the ground.
The AAP administration's focus on advertisements and posters had not translated into tangible improvements in the education system, Sidhu said.
He pointed to the work done during his tenure, stating, 'We constructed six state-of-the-art classrooms and purchased furniture worth ₹1 lakh, with ₹35 lakh allocated for upgrades in multiple schools across Mohali,' Sidhu said.
'Today, the AAP government is inaugurating toilet repairs and calling it an education revolution,' Sidhu added.
The Congress leader further criticised the AAP government for failing to upgrade schools despite its claims, highlighting teacher shortages and poor infrastructure that persist in many schools. 'The visible improvements are a result of the work done by previous governments, not AAP,' Sidhu said.
Sidhu demanded that chief minister Bhagwant Mann and the AAP leadership shift their focus from publicity stunts and empty slogans to completing long-pending educational projects in Mohali region.

Mangaluru: The Muslim community's anger towards the Congress govt became evident following a Congress leader's emotional outburst regarding Abdul Rahiman's brutal killing during district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao's press conference here on Saturday. Congress leader Usman Kallapu, a former chairman of the standing committee in Ullal City Municipal Council, intervened when the minister was briefing media persons about the law and order situation in the district. In Kolhapur, INDIA bloc likely to face local body elections together says Cong MLC Satej Patil
Kolhapur: Congress MLC Satej Patil has confirmed that the INDIA bloc parties will contest the upcoming local body elections in Kolhapur as a unified force. The elections for local bodies in Kolhapur district are slated for Sept-Oct. The alliance partners — comprising Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (SP) and left parties — have started their preparations at the booth level. Following a preliminary meeting with INDIA representatives in Kolhapur on Friday evening, Satej Patil indicated a 90-95% likelihood of contesting jointly. He noted that Congress state president Harshvardhan Sapkal recently consulted with NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray regarding Congress's stance in the forthcoming local body elections. He observed the state administration has lost its financial direction, and women previously addressed as "ladki" have seen reduced benefits. "The elections for Kolhapur and Ichalkaranji municipal corporations, ZP, and town councils will be held after the rains. This time, the picture will be different from the assembly elections. Ladki Bahin saved Mahayuti from defeat; however, for govt, the sisters are no longer considered 'ladki'. Funds need to be arranged to save the scheme by curtailing funds from other departments. State govt is planning to hand out loans to the Ladki Bahin beneficiaries so that govt can refrain from paying the monthly dole. Instead, the banks will receive the amount once a year," said Patil. The Congress MLC said state govt's total debt burden has reached Rs 9.5 lakh crore, approaching Rs 10 lakh crore. "The three parties in govt have failed to plan the finances of the state. The Mahayuti MLAs are still ignorant of the problems faced by the people. We raised our voice, and only after that did state govt start assessing the damages caused by the recent floods and heavy rain. With all these issues, we are going to face the elections, and we are hopeful of winning in all local bodies," added Patil.

Farmers protest Hemavati Link canal, DKS terms it politically motivated
Bengaluru, May 31 (UNI) Farmers in Karnataka's Tumakuru district launched a fierce protest on Saturday against the Hemavati Link Canal project, voicing concerns over water diversion from their area, its environmental impact and lack of consultation. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar dismissed the agitation as politically motivated and assured that the project would continue. Speaking to reporters here, he said, "This is just a political protest. There's nothing in it that can't be resolved. I've already held discussions with the concerned parties. We have a technical report in hand, and nearly 40 per cent of the work is already completed. There is no question of stopping the project." The protest turned tense as demonstrators set tyres ablaze and blocked the national highway between Bengaluru and Shivamogga, disrupting traffic and prompting police intervention. The protesters, including local farmers, members of the BJP and JD(S), and farmer organisations, accused the Congress-led government of pushing ahead with the project without addressing legitimate concerns of the local agrarian community. Farmers fear that diverting water from the Hemavathi River to benefit Magadi and Ramanagara districts will significantly reduce water availability for Tumakuru, thereby threatening irrigation and agricultural productivity in the region. "There was no proper consultation with us. This project is being imposed on us without considering its adverse effects on our livelihoods," said one of the protesting farmers. Apart from water concerns, activists and opposition leaders have called the project "unscientific," raising questions about its technical feasibility and possible environmental repercussions.
