Zahid confident BN-PH ties will lead to election success

BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (fourth from right) has defended the coalition's ties with Pakatan Harapan, which has come under criticism from Umno members.
GOPENG : Barisan Nasional is confident that the cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH) can ensure they retain the seats won in the last general election, its chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.
He said it was based on observations and results of the Mahkota and Ayer Kuning by-elections. He pointed out that BN had secured the Mahkota seat with a majority of 5,166 votes in 2022, but managed to win with a majority of 20,648 votes in the by-election in 2023, thanks to the partnership with PH.
'The same with Ayer Kuning; at the general election, we won with a majority of 2,213 votes, then when the by-election happened, we won with a majority of 5,006 votes. That's the type of increase we can see from the cooperation with PH,' he said at the Gopeng Umno delegates' meeting here today.
He said the cooperation with PH should be a guide and reflection for leaders and the grassroots as the strategy is sound and suitable to retain existing power. 'We cannot be proud and arrogant and want to go solo. This is the current reality and by cooperating with PH, we can also become dominant in the national political arena,' he said.

July 16 hearing on lawyer's bid to challenge JAC's constitutionality

The KL High Court has to determine whether the questions posed crossed the threshold of Section 84 of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964 for it to send the case to the apex court, which is the 'guardian of the Federal Constitution'. KUALA LUMPUR : The High Court will hear on July 16 a lawyer's application to refer several legal questions to the Federal Court regarding the constitutionality of the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) and its authority to propose candidates for judicial appointments. Counsel Daniel Annamalai, who is appearing for Syed Amir Syakib Arsalan Syed Ibrahim, said the court notified the parties about the matter via e-mail last week. That date was fixed in May by Justice Amarjeet Singh to hear Syed Amir's originating summons on the same subject matter. Syed Amir withdrew his stay application to suspend JAC activities and instead filed 16 questions of law on June 25 for the determination of the Federal Court. Amarjeet has to now determine whether the questions crossed the threshold of Section 84 of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964 for him to send the case to the apex court, which is the 'guardian of the Federal Constitution'. Syed Amir has named the government and JAC as defendants. Annamalai said the Bar Council would remain as an intervener in the latest application. Syed Amir is seeking a ruling on whether the JAC Act 2009 contravenes the constitution and is therefore unconstitutional, and whether judicial appointments made under the Act are rendered void as a result. He also questions whether the establishment of the JAC – without an express constitutional amendment and without consultation with the Conference of Rulers as required under Article 38(4) – invalidates the Act. In the originating summons filed in early April, Syed Amir argues that the powers vested in the nine-member JAC violate the doctrine of separation of powers and the basic structure of the constitution. He is seeking a mandamus order to compel the prime minister and the government to strictly adhere to the judicial appointment process prescribed under Article 122B of the Federal Constitution. He further claims that the JAC Act is inconsistent with Article 4, which declares the written constitution as the supreme law of the land. Under the JAC Act, the commission is tasked with proposing nominees for judicial appointments to the High Court, the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court. It also recommends candidates for the positions of chief justice, the president of the Court of Appeal, the chief judge of Malaya, and the chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak when vacancies arise. Syed Amir asserts that the questions were neither academic nor hypothetical but directly affect the validity of all judicial appointments made in Malaysia since 2009. He also maintains that Article 122B of the Federal Constitution grants the prime minister absolute discretion to advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on judicial appointments.

Amanah to review call for PH to contest Melaka polls solo

The Hang Tuah Jaya Amanah division yesterday agreed that PH should be prepared to face three-cornered contests if necessary at the next Melaka state election. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Amanah will review a resolution from one of its divisions urging Pakatan Harapan (PH) to contest the upcoming Melaka state election on its own. The Hang Tuah Jaya Amanah division passed the resolution yesterday, with members unanimously agreeing that PH should be prepared to face three-cornered contests if necessary. Amanah secretary-general Faiz Fadzil said the push to go solo may have been driven by overlapping seat claims with Umno. 'Amanah must respect the voice of the grassroots as this is a motion passed during the division's annual meeting,' he said. 'I understand the concerns of grassroots members as many of the seats contested by Amanah overlap with Umno's.' Amanah Youth chief Hasbie Muda said a final decision on whether to accept or reject the Hang Tuah Jaya resolution would be made at the party's national convention. 'Every view and motion from the grassroots will be considered and must be respected by the leadership,' he said. The Melaka state assembly has 28 seats: 20 held by Barisan Nasional (BN), five by PH, and three by Perikatan Nasional. Disputes over seat allocations in Melaka also surfaced in May when nine Melaka DAP branches proposed an equal split in seats between PH and BN, with each contesting 14 seats in the next election. BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi later said that such discussions were premature as the Melaka polls are only expected to be held next year. The current state assembly term ends in December 2026.

Sarawak assembly speaker Asfia Awang Nassar said all three readings of the bill will be done on the same day. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Sarawak has tabled a bill to increase the number of elected representatives in its state assembly from 82 to 99. Tourism, creative industry and performing arts minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who tabled the Dewan Undangan Negeri (Composition of Membership) Bill 2025, said the proposed increase was necessary to reflect Sarawak's demographic shifts and urban growth, as well as the rising demand for equitable representation. 'The state assembly must remain dynamic and responsive to the evolving needs of our people,' he said during a special sitting today, reported The Borneo Post. On Saturday, Sarawak assembly speaker Asfia Awang Nassar said all three readings of the bill would be done on the same day.
