A University of Manitoba professor has been charged in connection with a historic sexual assault investigation.
Oleg Pokhanovski, 55, was arrested after he turned himself in at Winnipeg Police Service headquarters on July 29 according to a Winnipeg police news release. He has been charged with sexual assault and sexual exploitation and was detained in custody.
None of the charges against Pokhanovski have been proven in court.
Winnipeg police said they started the investigation in February after being notified by a police agency in Canada.
Police allege between Dec. 17, 2007 and March 11, 2010, Pokhanovski started providing private music lessons to a 15-year-old girl at the university. It is alleged he started grooming the victim during the lessons and sexual assaults occurred off-campus.
Police allege when the girl ended the relationship, Pokhanovski repeatedly emailed her in an attempt to reinitiate contact. The victim was originally from Winnipeg and has since moved.
Pokhanovski's faculty page on the University of Manitoba's website describes him as 'an accomplished virtuosic violinist, pianist, arranger, and music educator.' He is listed as being 'on leave.'

Man shot dead by police in Vancouver's Joyce-Collingwood area

Social Sharing A man was shot dead by Vancouver police late Tuesday afternoon in the Joyce-Collingwood neighbourhood. The IIO, B.C.'s civilian-led police watchdog, is looking into the case. Vancouver police said in a short statement just before 7 p.m. PT that they responded to a call of a dispute between two neighbours around 4 p.m. When police officers arrived at the scene, near the intersection of Rupert Street and Vanness Avenue, they said they found a man with a weapon. The VPD statement said the man was shot by police and later died at the scene despite life-saving efforts. Police have not specified the nature of the weapon or the identity of the individual. No one else was injured. The Independent Investigations Office of B.C., which investigates all instances of death or serious harm that may have been the result of police action or inaction, is looking into the case. In its own statement, the IIO said that police were called to a residential building near the intersection where the shooting happened. The VPD said the case was an "unfolding investigation" and it would not provide further information at this point.
