Breakthrough in DJ Sumbody's murder as 4 suspects appear in court
Four suspects are scheduled to appear in court today for the murder of popular Pretoria DJ and businessman Oupa John Sefoka, also known as 'DJ Sumbody'.
According to Pretoria Rekord, the group faces charges including murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
The SAPS Political Killings Task Team made the breakthrough almost three years after Sefoka was killed in a hail of bullets in November 2022.
He was returning from a gig in Woodmead when he and his security detail were ambushed near the Engen Woodlands in Sandton.
Sefoka was a renowned South African DJ, radio personality, and successful co-owner of the restaurant and entertainment bar Ayepyep in Cape Town, Top-Notch restaurant in Pretoria, and other ventures.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe yesterday said the team arrested four men, aged between 45 and 60, in connection with the murder.
Mathe stated that Gauteng Organised Crime Detectives worked on the case and later called in the SAPS Political Killings Task Team to assist.
'The arrests were all effected in Gauteng on Monday afternoon. Three of the suspects are believed to be hitmen, and one is believed to have ordered the hit on the DJ,' she said.
Mathe confirmed that the weapon allegedly used in the crime was seized and has since been linked to other murders.
'All four suspects are in police custody and are expected to appear in court,' she added.
National police commissioner General Fannie Masemola welcomed the breakthrough by the SAPS Political Killings Task Team and Gauteng Organised Crime Detectives.
Masemola described it as a significant development that will hopefully provide closure to the families involved.
'Well done to the teams that have been piecing together evidence since November 2022. This is the culmination of hard work and dedication to justice. This is one of those complex cases where our teams needed time to ensure a thorough investigation and bring a strong case before court,' said Masemola.

SA's GBV terror: Many didn't celebrate Women's Day, but survived it
Call for protection of females as reported cases of scourge rise. While various Women's Day walks, marches and celebrations were hosted across the country over the weekend, many said more should be done to protect women, especially with the rise of gender-based violence (GBV). Highlights in Tshwane included more than 1 500 female law enforcement officers from Gauteng municipalities, who marched to the Union Buildings, re-enacting the historic 1956 march in which over 20 000 women protested against the extension of pass laws to women. The party's deputy spokesperson on police, Lisa Schickerling, said the scourge of GBV must be addressed and it must happen soon, adding South Africa was failing its women. 'Ekurhuleni recorded over 1 600 murders in 2024, with precincts like Primrose and Germiston ranking among the most dangerous in South Africa. 'Despite the crisis, many stations operate with inadequate critical staff and vehicle shortages, and gender-based violence victims are left without proper support,' she said. Shocking statistics Schickerling said it was no wonder that South Africa found itself in the midst of a gender-based violence crisis. Out of 1 154 police stations, only 134 have dedicated desks for GBV. Action Society spokesperson Juanita du Preez said every month in South Africa, an average of 320 women were murdered, 3 934 raped and 5 341 suffer grievous bodily harm. Du Preez said many women didn't celebrate Women's Day, but survived it. 'This is not just gender-based violence. It is a sustained, systematic assault on women. When a nation's women are attacked at this scale, it stops being crime – it becomes terror,' she said. Du Preez said the police crime statistics for 1 October to 31 December 2024 recorded 961 women murdered, which was 11 every day or 320 every month; 11 803 women raped, which was 131 every day and 3 934 every month, and 16 023 women assaulted, with 174 every day or 5 341 every month reported. 'These are only the reported cases. Thousands more remain hidden in silence, fear, or distrust of a system that too often fails them. 'By comparison, terrorism kills around 1 667 people per month globally. South African women alone face over 9 500 violent attacks every month – yet there is no war room, emergency deployment or national mobilisation.' 'Many are under-resourced, inconsistently staffed, or not fully operational. Rural and high-crime areas often have no access at all,' she said. Du Preez said Action Society wanted violence against women declared a national disaster, an urgent investment in public-private partnerships to strengthen investigative and forensic capacity, an expansion and permanent legislation of sexual offences courts in every district, with better-trained prosecutors and magistrates to prioritise GBV cases, and enforcement of mandatory minimum sentences and closure of legal loopholes. 'This Women's Day we cannot simply honour women with words. We must defend their right to safety and dignity with decisive action. Silence protects the predator, not the victim,' she said. Police Offer R300 000 Reward After Officers Killed in Brutal Attacks

These incidents highlight the ongoing and deadly threat faced by law enforcement officers in the Friday, 8 August 2025, two police officers from the Florida Police Station, Warrant Officer Vuyisile Sintwa (51) and Sergeant Simon Masenye (45), were tragically killed in a violent ambush. They were disarmed and shot dead while transporting Jabulani Moyo, a prisoner awaiting trial for a February 2023 business robbery, from the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court to prison. Moyo, who was being escorted in a police vehicle, managed to escape, stealing the vehicle and abandoning it several kilometres from the crime scene. National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, visited the families of the murdered officers and condemned the attack as a direct assault on the rule of law and the authority of the state. Masemola highlighted the increasing dangers police officers face while carrying out their duties, especially in the current climate of violent criminal attacks. The killings of Sintwa and Masenye are part of a disturbing trend of police fatalities in the country. Since the start of the 2025 financial year, six police officers have been killed in criminal attacks and ambushes. In the previous financial year, a total of 27 officers were killed in the line of duty. These figures reflect a concerning rise in violence against law enforcement and raise alarm about the safety of police officers who put their lives at risk every day to protect South African citizens. Masemola described the fallen officers as more than just numbers, emphasising that each was a parent and a breadwinner whose death left families devastated. He also reiterated the critical role police officers play in maintaining public safety, warning that the country cannot afford to remain silent while criminals attack the state's authority. 'We cannot allow criminals to declare war on the state. I urge all police officers to stay vigilant, make use of their tools and resources effectively, and ensure that they remain one step ahead of these criminals,' Masemola said. 'We must act appropriately when circumstances allow, and remember to use proportional force in response to threats.' The investigation into the murders of Sintwa and Masenye is being led by The Hawks, and police are calling on the public for assistance. Evidence gathered at the scene, including CCTV footage and witness accounts from a nearby filling station, is being used to piece together the details of the attack. A multidisciplinary team has also been formed to track down Moyo, who remains on the run. Police have raised questions about whether Moyo was properly restrained during transport, as protocol dictates that all awaiting trial prisoners be handcuffed. In addition to the R150 000 reward for information about Moyo's whereabouts, SAPS is offering another R150 000 for any leads that could lead to the arrest of the criminals responsible for the murder of Sergeant Lawrence Mtshweni, who was shot and killed during a response to a business burglary in Schoemansdal. The rise in police killings has prompted calls for better protection and more resources for law enforcement officers. These tragic events are a stark reminder of the dangers police face daily, and the need for continued vigilance in the fight against crime.
