Scarred U.K. assets soothed by U.S. trade pact, Bank of England rate cuts
Investors are betting on long-depressed U.K. markets as a U.S. trade deal, rate cuts and hopes for renewed links with Europe spur optimism for a revival as they search for alternatives to a volatile Wall Street and flailing dollar.
Britain's FTSE 100 share index completed its longest daily winning streak of all time this month and is now moving in line with international peers for the first time since 2021, while sterling sits near 38-month highs against the dollar .
Money managers expect at least more stability for U.K. assets scarred by Brexit, ex-Prime Minister Liz Truss' 2022 mini-Budget scare and January's bout of capital flight as soaring bond yields threatened shaky government finances.
A UK-EU summit, bets for Thursday's Bank of England rate cut to be followed by more easing this year and a wider move into Europe and Asia by investors spooked by potential tariff hits to U.S. growth are also sweeping gloom out of British markets.
'These are all marginal benefits that together add up into something bigger,' said Invesco global head of asset allocation research Paul Jackson, who sees U.K. stocks outperforming the U.S. this year.
The FTSE is up just over 4 per cent this year, while the broad S&P 500 index is down almost 4 per cent.
Jill Hirzel, senior investment specialist at London-based Insight Investment, said the 626 billion pounds ($834.27-billion) asset manager expected 30-year gilt yields, which underpin U.K. government borrowing rates, to likely drop from current levels around 5.2 per cent. When bond yield falls, their price rises.
U.S. President Donald Trump, who unleashed market turmoil with universal levies on April 2 before pausing most of those, on Thursday unveiled a trade agreement with the UK.
Britain's car industry will see U.S. tariffs immediately slashed to 10 per cent from 27.5 per cent, while levies on steel and aluminum will reduce to zero.
In late London trade, the domestically-focused FTSE 250 index was up 0.6 per cent.
The U.K. was already viewed as unlikely to be targeted by punitive import taxes, Fidelity International portfolio manager Shamil Gohil said, but a clear trade deal would lift market and economic sentiment from here.
'It reduces uncertainty, with clarity on tariffs helping to give confidence to businesses and consumers to start spending and investing,' Gohil added. 'We could even see a GDP bump because of it.'
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also wants annual UK-EU summits to follow talks in London on May 19, which will focus on defence partnerships but could set the scene for renewed co-operation in areas like youth mobility and labour.
U.K. assets have been on a rollercoaster ride for years, with the latest selling spree in January pushing sterling to 14-month lows and 10-year gilt yields to 17-year highs as fiscal and market stability fears fed on each other.
A brief market rally alongside the labour government's landslide election win last year faded fast as investors stayed cautious on British assets layered with extra risk after the 2022 rout and 2016 Brexit vote.
Heightened U.S. trade uncertainty, however, which has sparked anxiety about growth slowing and inflation rising and shaken faith in U.S. assets, means Britain appears relatively steady.
'I think the political volatility (in the U.K.) continues, but hopefully from an international perspective investors become less concerned about the fiscal issues than they have been in the last decade,' Aberdeen Investments fixed income fund manager Mark Munro said.
'Some of that concern might move elsewhere (with investors) starting to look again at U.S. budget deficits and the volatility of Treasuries.'
Big investors have warned that protectionist and volatile U.S. trade policies may erode the safe haven status of U.S. Treasuries, with higher yields raising the cost of financing $37-trillion worth of national debt.
In the U.K., weak growth and high borrowing are still driving finance minister Rachel Reeves towards hiking taxes or breaching budget targets, the National Institute of Economic and Social Research think tank said, but investors see rate cuts helping.
'The U.K. has been viewed poorly and discounted for quite a long time now and I think overall it is a lot more stable now than what we've had,' said Janus Henderson global equity income manager Andrew Jones, who said he has had overweight stance on U.K. stocks for some time.
And although Bank of England rate setters were split on Thursday's rate decision, lower oil prices and a stronger pound would help contain price pressure and clear the way for further rate cuts ahead, analysts said.
Premier Miton CIO Neil Birrell added that while he was not currently raising exposure to the U.K., he was receiving an unusually high volume of queries about this long unpopular market from clients.
Fidelity's Gohil said overseas pension fund clients had started expressing interest in buying into Britain to diversify away from the U.S. He was also raising holdings of debt issued by U.K. banks and utilities groups.
'The UK's definitely more immune to the direct impact of trade wars. So actually, as a place to hide, it's not the worst.'

Equinox Gold Stock Trading Cheaper Than Industry: Should You Buy Now?
Equinox Gold Corp. 's EQX stock looks attractive from a valuation perspective. EQX is currently trading at a forward price/earnings of 6.54X, a roughly 51.2% discount to the Zacks Mining – Gold industry's average of 13.4X. EQX is trading at a discount to its peers, B2Gold Corp. BTG, Eldorado Gold Corporation EGO and IAMGOLD Corporation IAG. Equinox Gold, B2Gold, Eldorado Gold and IAMGOLD have a Value Score of A, each. EQX's P/E F12M Vs. Industry, BTG, EGO and IAG Technical indicators show that EQX stock broke out above its 50-day simple moving average (SMA) on May 30, 2025. It is also currently trading above the 200-day SMA. The 50-day SMA continues to read higher than the 200-day SMA following a golden crossover on Jan. 29, 2025, indicating a bullish trend. EQX Trades Above 50-Day SMA Equinox Gold's cheap valuation should lure investors seeking value. But is the time right to buy EQX's shares based on its attractive valuation? Let's delve deeper. Expansion Actions, Calibre Merger Underpin EQX's Growth Equinox Gold has rapidly evolved into a diversified, growth-focused gold producer. With operating mines spanning Canada, the United States and Brazil, it is targeting over one million ounces of annual production through an ambitious pipeline of expansions. It currently has five producing mines and three expansion and development projects that are expected to add roughly 300,000 ounces of annual production over the next few years. Greenstone, which achieved commercial production last November, is ramping up toward the full production target rate of 196,000 tons per day (tpd), which is expected in the second half of 2025. Greenstone is expected to produce around 390,000 ounces of gold annually at full production. Also, an underground expansion at the Aurizona mine in Brazil will extend the mine life to 11 years and expand gold production with an average annual gold production of 137,000 ounces. The Phase 2 project at Castle Mountain in California is expected to increase production to an average of 218,000 ounces annually over a 14-year Phase 2 mine life, with further potential for expansion from exploration. Aligning with its growth strategy, Equinox Gold, in February 2025, agreed to acquire all outstanding common shares of Calibre Mining Corp. Through this transaction, Equinox Gold will enhance its asset base with operating mines in Nicaragua and the United States, as well as earlier-stage assets in the United States. Also, the acquisition includes the Valentine Gold Mine in Newfoundland, Canada, which is expected to commence gold production in the third quarter of 2025. The deal received approval from both EQX shareholders and Calibre securityholders on May 1, 2025, and is expected to close around the end of June 2025. The combination of Greenstone and Valentine Gold will create a Canadian gold mining powerhouse with more than 1.2 million ounces of annual production, and benefit from low-cost production growth, increased cash flow, lower operating costs and a stronger balance sheet. The combined entity, with around 23 million ounces of proven and probable gold reserves, will be well-placed to capitalize on the favorable gold price environment while deleveraging the balance sheet using strong cash flow generation. Higher Gold Prices to Drive EQX's Profitability Gold prices have rallied roughly 27% this year, largely attributable to aggressive trade policies, including sweeping new import tariffs announced by President Donald Trump that have intensified global trade tensions and heightened investor anxiety. Also, central banks worldwide have been accumulating gold reserves, led by risks arising from Trump's policies. Prices of the yellow metal catapulted to a record high of $3,500 per ounce on April 22 as the U.S. dollar tumbled amid President Trump's criticism of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and call for an immediate reduction in interest rates. Increased purchases by central banks, hopes of interest rate cuts, and geopolitical tensions are factors expected to help the yellow metal sustain the rally. While gold prices have fallen from their April 2025 highs, they remain favorable. The yellow metal is gaining from safe-haven demand triggered by trade and geopolitical uncertainties, and is currently hovering above the $3,300 per ounce level. Higher gold prices are expected to boost EQX's profitability and drive cash flow generation. Equinox Gold's Strong Financial Health Bodes Well EQX has a strong balance sheet and generates substantial cash flows, which allows it to fund its growth projects. The company ended the first quarter with strong liquidity, including roughly $173 million in unrestricted cash and $65 million in an undrawn credit facility. It also generated cash flow from operations (before changes in non-cash working capital) of $73.3 million in the quarter. The company expects to pursue deleveraging in the second half of 2025, utilizing strong cash flow generation partly through the ramp-up of Greenstone. Higher Costs May Strain EQX's Margins EQX's first-quarter results reveal a sharp uptick in all-in-sustaining costs (AISC) — a key indicator of cost efficiency in mining. AISC climbed to $2,065 per ounce, up roughly 6% from $1,950 per ounce in the year-ago quarter. Excluding the results from the Los Filos mine in Mexico, which has been indefinitely suspended after the expiry of its land access agreement, AISC still climbed 9% to $1,979 per ounce, underscoring operational cost inflation that threatens margins. This upside reflects higher unit costs in Brazil, and higher costs and unplanned maintenance due to winter challenges at the Greenstone mine in Canada. Higher operational costs, partly due to the suspension of Los Filos mine operations, may continue to act as headwinds in the second quarter. Equinox Gold expects roughly $35 million in mine suspension and care and maintenance charges at Los Filos in the second quarter. Nevertheless, there is a silver lining as the company envisions costs whittling down with rising production in the second half of 2025. Equinox Gold Stock Outperforms S&P 500 Thanks to the rally in gold prices, EQX's shares have racked up a gain of 36% over the past year, underperforming the industry's 51.7% increase but topping the S&P 500's rise of 11.2%. Among its peers, B2Gold, Eldorado Gold and IAMGOLD have rallied 39.1%, 43.2% and 105.9%, respectively, over the same period. EQX's One-year Price Performance What EQX's Earnings Estimates Indicate Earnings estimates for EQX have been revised downward over the past 30 days. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2025 and 2026 has been revised lower over the same time frame. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for EQX's 2025 and 2026 earnings implies a year-over-year rise of 230% and 106%, respectively. (Find the latest EPS estimates and surprises on Zacks Earnings Calendar.) Final Thoughts: Hold Onto EQX Stock With a strong expansion roadmap and an accretive merger on deck, EQX is positioning itself as a high-growth gold player. Higher gold prices and the ramp-up of Greenstone are expected to boost its profitability and drive cash flow generation. Despite EQX's attractive valuation, its high costs warrant caution. Cost pressures may linger into the second quarter, but the second half of 2025 promises improved unit costs and operational discipline. Therefore, holding onto this Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) stock will be prudent for investors to capture the upside from production expansion and merger synergies. 1 High-Yield Vanguard ETF That Is a No-Brainer for Income
Given the market volatility this year, there are likely investors out there who would prefer an investment strategy that avoids some of the stressful market swings that have started to become the norm. After all, the broader benchmark S&P 500 index has already experienced multiple swings of nearly 20% both up and down, enough activity to make anyone's stomach churn. One way to avoid some of the stress in today's market is to diversify your investments across a broad basket of stocks through an exchange-traded fund (ETF). It's even better if you find an ETF that can generate passive income because then you are still making money each quarter and every year with much more predictability. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Learn More » Here's one high-yield Vanguard ETF that is a no-brainer for passive income. This ETF has real energy The energy sector hasn't exactly crushed it this year. Many experts expect global oil prices to remain soft on weak demand, while the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) moves to increase production, which will increase supply. However, the Vanguard Energy ETF (NYSEMKT: VDE) is still trading up close to 125% over the last five years (as of June 10). The ETF has 112 stocks in it and controlled $8.1 billion in net assets at the end of April. The fund's strong performance can be attributed mainly to the fact that ExxonMobil makes up nearly a quarter of its assets. The global oil and gas company has greatly improved operations over the last five years, controlling costs, generating strong returns on capital, growing free cash flow, and returning lots of capital to shareholders. ExxonMobil is a strong dividend payer, and between dividends and share repurchases, it returned $140 billion in capital to shareholders between 2019 and 2024. The ETF's dividend yield is 3.27% and the fund has a five-year average yield of close to 3.7%. Data by YCharts. The three largest sectors in the ETF are integrated oil and gas (39.3%), oil and gas exploration and production (25.7%), and oil and gas storage and transportation (17%). Here are the fund's top 10 holdings and their weightings: Rank/Holding ETF Weighting Rank/Holding ETF Weighting 1. ExxonMobil 24.45% 6. Kinder Morgan 3.00% 2. Chevron 13.29% 7. Cheniere Energy 2.99% 3. ConocoPhillips 6.61% 8. Oneok 2.91% 4. Williams Companies 4.06% 8. Schlumberger 2.59% 5. EOG Resources 3.55% 10. Marathon Petroleum 2.55% Source: Vanguard. Holdings are as of April 30, 2025. A good dividend in an intriguing sector Clearly, the Vanguard Energy ETF has a solid track record of paying a high-yielding dividend. I also think having some exposure to energy can serve investors well by acting as a hedge. While oil prices have been down, many of the world's richest investors, like Warren Buffett, are betting on energy prices going higher based on their latest stock purchases. It's possible that these investors think the world will be more reliant on oil and gas in the future than many believe. They are finite assets, so wealthy investors may see advantages to owning large oil and gas assets. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration's International Energy Outlook report in 2023, global supplies of crude oil, other liquid hydrocarbons, and biofuels are expected to meet the world's demand for liquid fuels through 2050. Perhaps Buffett and other institutional investors betting on oil are taking the long view that supply could eventually become constrained. Or perhaps they think the oil and gas companies are positioned to adopt renewable energy or other lower-carbon sources. Regardless, energy stocks can be a decent hedge in a potential scenario when oil prices surge. The stocks in the Vanguard Energy ETF should benefit in this scenario, while rising prices could significantly increase costs for many other sectors. If I Could Invest $1,000 in Any Growth Stock, It Would Be This One
This year has been rocky for the U.S. stock market. Between the Trump administration's tariff plans (and subsequent backtracks), recession fears, and overall uncertainty, the stock market has been more volatile than usual. Due to the uncertainty, investors have been heading toward value and dividend stocks, shifting away from the growth stocks that have been so popular in recent years. And while this is a strategic move to minimize risk, all isn't lost with growth stocks. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Learn More » One growth stock in particular that I would consider is Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG)(NASDAQ: GOOGL). With a market cap of more than $2 trillion (as of June 9), Alphabet may not seem like your typical growth stock, but it checks the boxes. And right now, it's a bargain worth considering. It's hard to overlook Alphabet's cheap valuation It's been a tough start to the year for Alphabet, down more than 8% through June 9 and essentially flat over the past 12 months. Of course, this isn't ideal for shareholders, but it does make the stock a lot more attractive for those looking to add shares or make their first purchase. At around 18 times forward earnings, Alphabet's stock is trading below the market (compared to the S&P 500) and is much cheaper than peers like Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta. MSFT PE Ratio (Forward) data by YCharts Trading at a relatively low value alone doesn't make Alphabet's stock a buy, but it does make the upside far outweigh the downside. Alphabet will remain a cash cow for the foreseeable future Alphabet has consistently been one of the top money-making businesses in the world. With subsidiaries that include Google, YouTube, Android, Waymo, and dozens of others, it's easy to see why. For perspective, Alphabet made $90.2 billion in revenue in the first quarter (up 12% year over year), more than companies like FedEx, Johnson & Johnson, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company have made in their last four quarters combined. GOOGL Revenue (Quarterly) data by YCharts Despite the billions Alphabet makes, it's hard to ignore the concentration of the company's revenue streams. Advertising, which includes Google Search and YouTube ads, accounted for more than 74% ($66.9 billion) of Alphabet's total revenue. As advertising goes, so does Alphabet's business. That alone isn't the problem, but some people fear that artificial intelligence (AI) tools could lead to reduced use of Google Search, potentially impacting its core business model. It may have some impact, but I don't think it will be significant, especially as Google incorporates its own AI tools and finds ways to monetize them. Google Cloud is still experiencing high growth Although Google advertising is Alphabet's bread and butter, the company's main growth driver right now is Google Cloud. In Q1, Google Cloud made $12.3 billion in revenue, up 28% year over year. Arguably more impressive than the revenue growth is the operating income growing 142% year over year to $2.2 billion. It takes a lot of scale for cloud computing businesses to be profitable because they have high fixed costs for things like data centers, servers, and other infrastructure. It appears that Google Cloud has reached that scale. Google Cloud (12%) is firmly behind Amazon Web Services (30%) and Microsoft Azure (21%) in market share, and will likely remain in the third spot for the foreseeable future. However, it can be a productive business for Alphabet. Even in the third spot, the cloud pie is expected to grow large enough that Google Cloud could still make a meaningful contribution to Alphabet's financials. Although antitrust scrutiny and court rulings could reshape Alphabet's business down the road, the company is well positioned to remain a dominant force in tech for years to come. You likely won't regret investing $1,000 in the stock when you look back years from now. Should you invest $1,000 in Alphabet right now? Before you buy stock in Alphabet, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and Alphabet wasn't one of them.
