India's digital economy projected to reach $1 trillion by 2025 end: DIPA

New Delhi: With urban wireless tele-density already at 131.45 per cent and telecommunications contributing over 6.5 per cent to GDP, India has reached a pivotal moment where connectivity transcends its traditional boundaries, the Digital Infrastructure Providers Association (DIPA) said on Tuesday.
The digital economy is projected to reach $1 trillion by end-2025, yet this figure only hints at the profound transformation underway as connected living redefines sectors from healthcare to agriculture, education to transportation.
"We're witnessing the birth of ambient intelligence, where connectivity becomes the invisible force empowering every aspect of daily life," said Manoj Kumar Singh, Director General, DIPA.
India's telecommunications infrastructure is no longer just about communication — it's becoming the neural network of society itself.
'The future belongs to connected living environments where automated systems, mesh networks, and intelligent applications work in symphony to enhance human experience. This isn't incremental improvement; it's a fundamental reimagining of how technology serves humanity,' Singh explained.
The magic happens in the invisible mesh networks blanketing the nation.
India's telecom operators have deployed an extraordinary 4.78 lakh 5G Base Transceiver Stations by March 2025, contributing to a total of 30 lakh BTSs across all technologies.
But the true innovation lies not in the infrastructure itself but in what it enables — a continuous, self-healing web of communication that powers millions of intelligent devices working in concert.
In healthcare, connected living has revolutionised patient monitoring through IoT medical devices that transmit vital data to AI systems capable of detecting anomalies hours or days before they become clinically apparent.
Rural areas previously underserved by medical professionals now access specialised care through high-definition telemedicine enabled by robust connectivity.
According to Singh, agricultural productivity has surged through precision farming networks where thousands of sensors monitor soil conditions, weather patterns, and crop health — automatically adjusting irrigation and nutrient delivery while predicting optimal harvest times.
Farmers report yield increases averaging 28 per cent while reducing water consumption by 31 per cent.
'Education has been transformed through immersive connected classrooms that erase geographical limitations. Students in remote regions now engage with the nation's leading instructors through near-holographic experiences, manipulating virtual objects and conducting collaborative experiments across vast distances,' said Singh.
The Smart City Mission, having completed 7,549 projects at a cost of Rs 1,51,285 crore, showcases how telecommunications enables environments to respond to human needs without conscious interaction.
"Connected living represents a paradigm shift from reactive to predictive systems," Singh said.
The vision extends to commercial 6G deployment by 2030, which promises to further dissolve barriers between physical and digital realms.

Petroleum dept gets 6,315 cr tax breather

Jaipur: The Custom Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal in New Delhi rejected a decision of CGST Jodhpur, providing relief to the state petroleum department in a Rs 6,315 crore service tax case. Principal secretary (Mines and Petroleum) T Ravikanth said the petroleum department effectively advocated and secured the significant relief based on a clarification that states mining rights are not "auxiliary services" and are exempted under the negative list until March 2016. He mentioned that in the guideline issued by Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs on June 20, it was stated that mining rights are not ancillary services and are exempted under the negative list. The Central Appellate Tribunal passed this decision, accepting the stand of the state govt. The state receives dead rent and royalty on crude oil and natural gas production and leases in Barmer and Jaisalmer. Jodhpur CGST considered the dead rent and royalty received by the state govt as rent and imposed tax on it along with interest and penalty. tnn

Proposal for retaining walls to mitigate floods with state: Misal

Pune: State cabinet minister and Parvati MLA Madhuri Misal on Thursday said the state govt was considering a proposal to allot Rs 200 crore to construct retaining and safety walls as part of flood mitigation and disaster management steps in the city. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has tabled the proposal before the state govt. Misal said the govt will give further instructions after working on the proposal. The civic body proposed retaining and safety walls at various locations after instances of flooding in the city, but the work has been progressing slowly due to a lack of funds. PMC started the tendering process, however, it was scrapped due to various technical reasons. Bank declares Jayaswal, son as wilful defaulters

Nagpur: Abhijeet Group chief Manoj Jayaswal, whose loans run up to Rs12,500 crore, has been declared a wilful defaulter by Bank of India (BoI). BoI's asset recovery branch at Ranchi, Jharkhand, issued a notice declaring both Jayaswal and his son Abhishek as wilful defaulters for a Rs 164 crore loan granted to Abhijeet Infrastructure Limited — one of the 75 companies in which the duo were directors. Jayaswal is now understood to have relocated to Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, running a ferro manganese business. Sources say he has wound up from Nagpur entirely. Jayaswal's Abhijeet Group was granted over Rs22,000 crore loans by a consortium of banks of which Rs12,500 crore was disbursed, said a source in one of the lending banks. The group was also one of the biggest beneficiaries of the controversial coal allocation scheme of the UPA regime. A bank has to follow an elaborate procedure for giving the borrower such a tag. According to RBI guidelines, it can happen when the repayment was not done even when the borrower had the capacity to repay. It can also be done if funds are diverted, and the money cannot be traced in the form of other assets. A quick search on BoI records available in the public domain shows Jayaswal was declared a wilful defaulter for two other loans in the recent past. It was for combined Rs600 crore loans granted to Abhijeet Integrated Steel Limited and Corporate Ispat Limited. Jayaswal, was the second businessman after Gautam Adani to buy a private jet, floated a series of companies. The jet has now been grounded after the company could not pay for the maintenance required to meet the DGCA norms. In Jharkhand, where the BoI branch declared him a wilful defaulter, Abhijeet Group had plans to build a power plant. It was also allocated coal blocks in the state on the basis of which it planned to enter the power sector in the state. It set up a power plant even in Nagpur for exclusively supplying electricity to the Mihan-SEZ, but the plans did not work out, ending in a dispute between Abhijeet Group and the state govt.
