SHAH ALAM - Suleiman al-Obeid, widely known as the 'Palestinian Pelé,' was killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Gaza, according to the Palestine Football Association (PFA).
Obeid leaves behind his wife and five children. He was reportedly among a group of civilians waiting for humanitarian aid when the attack occurred.
The PFA described him as 'one of the brightest stars of Palestinian football,' noting that he had scored over 100 goals during his career.
A native of Gaza, born on March 24, 1984, Obeid began his career with Khadamat al-Shati and later played for Gaza Sport and the West Bank club Markaz Shabab al-Am'ari.
His most iconic goal came in 2010 during a match against Yemen in the West Asian Football Federation Championship.
According to the British daily The Guardian, it was this goal that marked his rise and earned him the title 'the Palestinian Pelé,' in tribute to Brazil's football icon.
The PFA said his death is one of many losses in the Palestinian sports community since the war began.
At least 662 athletes and their family members have been killed, including 421 footballers, with 103 of them being children.
Damage to sports infrastructure has also been severe.
The PFA reported that 288 sports facilities across Gaza and the West Bank have been destroyed or damaged.
This includes stadiums, gyms, clubhouses and even the PFA's own headquarters in Gaza, which was hit in an airstrike.
Since the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation began operations in late May with US and Israeli backing, over 1,300 Palestinians have reportedly died near aid distribution points.

Salah criticises UEFA for 'Palestinian Pele' tribute: 'Tell us how he died'
LONDON: Liverpool's Mohamed Salah has criticised Europe's football governing body UEFA for posting a tribute to "Palestinian Pele" Suleiman al-Obeid that did not mention the former international died after being hit by Israeli gunfire in the Gaza Strip. Obeid, 41, was killed on Wednesday when Israeli forces "targeted people waiting for humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip", the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) said in a statement. Europe's football governing body UEFA posted on X: "Farewell to Suleiman al-Obeid, the 'Palestinian Pele'. A talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times." Egyptian striker Salah responded by posting: "Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?" Born in Gaza City, Obeid was married and had five children. He played 24 international matches for team Palestine. In October 2023, Salah called on "world leaders to come together" to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza to "prevent further slaughter of innocent souls." Since the start of the Gaza war, triggered by Palestinian militant group Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel, 662 people from the sport and scouting sector have been killed, including 321 in the football community, according to the PFA. Salah, who was the Premier League top scorer last season, is due to line up for Liverpool on Sunday in the Community Shield at Wembley against Crystal Palace, the traditional curtain-raiser to the English football season.--AFP

Salah criticises UEFA farewell for 'Palestinian Pele' not mentioning his death at hands of Israeli soldiers
ISTANBUL — Egyptian football star Mohamed Salah on Saturday protested UEFA's silence on how a former Palestinian player was killed by an Israeli attack while waiting for humanitarian aid in Gaza, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. Suleiman al-Obaid was killed on Wednesday amid the second year of Israel's genocide in Gaza. Marking his passing, UEFA wrote, 'Farewell to Suleiman al-Obaid, the 'Palestinian Pele.' A talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times' – but said nothing about how he died. Salah pointedly criticised UEFA's farewell to Al-Obaid, saying: 'Can you tell us how, where and why he died?' More than 800 athletes have been killed in Gaza since the start of Israel's offensive on Oct 7, 2023, as the sports community continues to suffer under bombardment, famine, and the collapse of infrastructure, according to Palestinian officials. One of the latest victims was al-Obaid, who was killed while waiting for humanitarian aid – a common occurrence under a controversial Israeli- and US-backed aid scheme that critics have called a 'death trap.' According to the UN, at least 1,373 Palestinians have been killed since May 27 while seeking food under the scheme, while Israel blocks other aid groups from entering Gaza. The Palestinian Football Association said in a statement: 'Former national team player Suleiman al-Obaid was martyred during an attack by occupation forces while waiting for humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip.' Al-Obaid, 41, born in Gaza and a father of five, is seen as one of the brightest stars in Palestinian football history. He played 24 official matches for the national team and scored two goals. — BERNAMA-ANADOLU

(EPA Images pic) NEW YORK : Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah on Saturday criticised Uefa's tribute to the late Suleiman Al-Obeid, known as the 'Palestinian Pele', after European football's governing body failed to reference the circumstances surrounding his death this week. The Palestine Football Association said that Al-Obeid, 41, was killed by an Israeli strike targeting civilians waiting for humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday. In a brief post on the social media platform X, Uefa called the former national team member 'a talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times.' Salah responded, 'Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?' Uefa was not immediately available to comment. One of the Premier League's biggest stars, the 33-year-old Egyptian Salah has previously advocated for humanitarian aid to be allowed into Gaza in the nearly two-year-old war. The UN says more than 1,000 people have been killed near aid distribution sites and aid convoys in Gaza since the launch of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a US- and Israel-backed aid distribution system, in late May.
