Japan backs India's fight against terrorism

Hindustan Times05-05-2025

New Delhi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday hosted his Japanese counterpart Gen Nakatani for wide-ranging talks touching upon the scourge of terrorism and ways to expand bilateral defence ties in the wake of China's military posturing in the Indo-Pacific.
Gen Nakatani, whose visit to India comes amid its heightened tensions with Pakistan in the wake of the Pahalgam attack, condemned the terrorist attack and expressed solidarity with India in the fight against terrorism.
In his opening remarks at the delegation-level talks that followed a one-on-one meeting, Singh said, "I would like to thank the government of Japan for their strong expression of solidarity with India in wake of the Pahalgam terrorist attack".
"India shares a Special, Strategic and Global partnership with Japan. During the bilateral meeting we discussed defence cooperation and regional security," Singh said in a social media post.
"Both sides condemned terrorism in all forms and emphasised the need for enhanced collaboration and joint efforts to counter cross-border threats."
Singh said Nakatani expressed solidarity with India in the wake of the Pahalgam attack and offered "full support" to India.
It is learnt that the two sides also deliberate on ways to boost India-Japan defence industrial cooperation.
The two ministers also exchanged "views and ideas" on the current regional and international security situation.
It was the second meeting between the two defence ministers within six months after their maiden interaction in November on the sidelines of the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting-Plus at Lao PDR.
At that meeting, Singh and Gen Nakatani deliberated on a reciprocal provision of supply and services agreement for greater interoperability between their militaries.
The reciprocal supply and services pact, if sealed, would provide for the militaries of the two countries to use each other's bases for repair and replenishment of supplies, besides facilitating the scaling up of overall defence cooperation.
It is learnt that the two sides also reviewed the situation in the strategic waters of East and South China Seas where Beijing has been increasing its military posturing.

Dassault CEO refutes Pakistan's claim of shooting down IAF's 3 Rafale jets, calls them ‘inaccurate'

India-Pakistan Conflict: Refuting Pakistan's claim that three Rafale jets were shot down during the May 7–10 conflict between India and its neighbour, Dassault Aviation CEO Eric Trappier labelled Islamabad's claims as 'inaccurate'. The French aerospace major is the manufacturer of Rafale jets, the Indian Air Force's most advanced fighter plane. 'The Indians haven't communicated, so we don't know exactly what happened. What we already know is that what the Pakistanis are saying is inaccurate,' Trappier told French magazine Challenges. Emphasising that the success of a military mission cannot be judged solely by the absence of losses, the Dassault CEO said: 'When you operate combat aircraft, you are carrying out a mission. The mission's success is not having zero losses, it's having achieved its objectives.' Pakistan had earlier claimed to have shot down six Indian jets between May 7 and 10 conflict. The conflict started after India launched attacks on terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir under Operation Sindoor in response to Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. Trappier further said: 'We'll see if there were losses, and if the war aims were achieved. When the truth comes out, some people may be surprised.' Dassault and Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) will jointly manufacture fuselage for Rafale combat jets in India from 2028 that will mark production of the critical component for the first time outside France. Under the partnership, TASL will set up a cutting-edge facility in Hyderabad to produce key fuselage sections for Rafale aircraft -- a venture that is being seen as a significant forward movement for India's aerospace sector. "Dassault Aviation and Tata Advanced Systems Limited have signed four production transfer agreements to manufacture the Rafale fighter aircraft fuselage in India, marking a significant step forward in strengthening the country's aerospace manufacturing capabilities and supporting global supply chains," the TASL said in a statement last week. The Dassault-Tata partnership came as the French company has emerged as a key contender for India's mega fighter programme under which it is acquiring 114 new jets for the Indian Air Force. Over a month ago, India and France signed an intergovernmental agreement sealing a mega deal to procure 26 Rafale marine jets at a cost of ₹ 64,000 crore.

Indian diaspora sees PM Modi's Canada visit as moment for rebuilding trust

Alberta [Canada], June 15 (ANI): As Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarks on a three-nation tour, culminating in his participation at the G7 Summit hosted in Alberta, Canada, members of the Indian diaspora across Canada and the United States have extended a warm welcome and expressed hope for a renewed chapter in India-Canada relations. The visit comes at a time when bilateral ties between the two nations have been strained in recent years, primarily due to concerns over Canada's perceived leniency towards Khalistani separatist elements. However, PM Modi's invitation by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is being viewed by many as a significant diplomatic overture and a potential turning point in Indo-Canadian relations. 'We warmly welcome you to Canada and hope that with your arrival, the relations between India and Canada will grow stronger and more prosperous,' said Harjit Singh Sandhu, Vice Chairman of the India Canada Organisation (ICO), Montreal. Echoing a similar sentiment, Harpreet Singh, a Canada-based journalist, noted the importance of the G7 platform. 'The world is passing through a critical phase, and the G7 meeting in Alberta will be a great opportunity for world leaders to brainstorm and find solutions to pressing global challenges,' Singh said. 'Our Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi from India, which is a welcome step. There have been issues between India and Canada in the past few years, and I hope during this meeting, things are sorted out and a new path is chosen where both countries develop and prosper,' said Harpreet Singh. Singh emphasised the importance of strengthening cooperation in trade, technology, and investment, stating that the over one million-strong Indian diaspora in Canada is eager for 'peace, stability, and progress.' In New Jersey, HS Paneser, President of the Global Indian Diaspora Alliance, hailed the visit as a 'pivotal moment to reset and rebuild Indo-Canadian relations.' 'As of June 2025, Prime Minister Modi's participation in the G7 Summit, hosted by Prime Minister Carney, is being widely viewed by the Indian diaspora and global observers as a crucial opportunity to address and improve the recent strain in bilateral ties,' Paneser told ANI. He pointed to a prevailing sentiment of cautious optimism among the diaspora, referring to the G7 invitation as 'an olive branch -- a symbolic and strategic soft restart to the relationship.' Highlighting shared interests in trade, critical minerals, technology, and academic exchange, Paneser said both countries stand to benefit from 'strengthened cooperation and mutual respect.' He also stressed the significance of people-to-people ties, particularly the contributions of Indian students and professionals in Canada. 'The fact that PM Modi has been invited to the G7, despite India not being a member, underscores India's rising global stature as the world's most populous country and fourth-largest economy,' Paneser remarked. 'We see this visit as a pivotal moment to rebuild trust, enhance cooperation, and usher in a more constructive and mutually beneficial phase in Indo-Canadian relations.' Concluding on a hopeful note, he added, 'In the spirit of progress and partnership, we, the members of the Indian diaspora, wholeheartedly welcome this positive move and hope it marks the beginning of better days for both nations.'
