When the Memphis Grizzlies pulled off their stunning trade of Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic last week, people wondered whether the deal meant they'd be moving on from Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. next in a full rebuild. Now, it seems, we have some answers.
ESPN's Tim Bontemps reported immediately after that the team wants to keep its two remaining building blocks. The feeling is apparently mutual on Morant's end. In a message posted to X on Tuesday, the point guard expressed his desire to remain in Memphis, saying "ima be in dat 901," referencing the city's area code.
Continuing in what seemed to be a response to ESPN's Stephen A. Smith -- who said on First Take other players don't want to go to Memphis for safety concerns -- Morant made a criticism of people focusing on the Grizzlies rather than the ongoing NBA Finals: "instead of focusing on the performances we seen from jdub/shai , tj/siakam, how this series is going . we say sumn negative about a city/team on a national level."
As hit dogs do, Smith hollered in a tweet of his own, citing the recent trade news as his reason for addressing the Grizzlies. And as Smith does, he turned Morant's response into another First Take segment on Wednesday, clarifying his position. "The citizens in Memphis, I think a lot better can be done for them," Smith said. "And Ja Morant staying put and being the galvanizing force he can be, I think can assist in that. That's what I was trying to say."
But this isn't about Smith. This is about Morant.
That he wants to remain in Memphis and seems to have so much passion for the city has to be welcoming news for Grizzlies fans, who were probably dreading an upcoming rebuild after the Bane deal. At his best, Morant is one of the most exciting players in the NBA, and it's hard not to feel like the 25-year-old hasn't scratched the surface of his full potential. The Grizzlies have made the playoffs in four of his six years with the team, and even if they aren't winning, he's reason enough for fans to show up.
The next step for Morant and Memphis is to make a deep playoff push. He has to stay healthy, of course (and make better decisions off the floor), and the Grizzlies have to hope new head coach Tuomas Iisalo is the person who can finally get the most out of the entire roster. But it's important for a small-market team like the Grizzlies to have a star who actually wants to be there. With that much in place, the real work continues on building a contender.

Regardless of whether Tyrese Haliburton is able to go or not for Game 6, I think we can all agree his strained calf is ruining what was a perfect NBA Finals. With the Indiana Pacers' backs up against the wall, it would've been nice to see them have an opportunity to fight back with their star point guard at full health. Now, there's a question of whether Haliburton will be able to go at all.
On Wednesday morning, Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle told 107.5 The Fan that Haliburton will "probably be a game-time decision" for Thursday's game. That means the team has to prepare for two scenarios: one where Haliburton plays and another for if he does not, which isn't ideal at all while facing elimination.

It's no wonder why so many other random events across sports have better odds of happening than a Pacers championship right now. The Pacers were going to have their hands full trying to extend a series against the Oklahoma City Thunder as things were. With Haliburton hobbled, it's hard to imagine they still find a way to pull off the upset.

The Magic made the first big move of the offseason as they landed Desmond Bane in a trade with the Grizzlies. But the price is steep as it's an aggressive move. While the Magic land a talented player in Bane, per ESPN's Shams Charania, they sent the Grizzlies four unprotected first-round picks, a first-round pick swap, along with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Cole Anthony. That's naturally a lot to give up for Bane, who spent the first five seasons of his career in Memphis. But the Magic are looking to take the next step toward being a playoff contender, so they landed the sharpshooting guard. Bane, 26, averaged 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists in 69 games last season. Advertisement Immediately, the Magic now pair the 6-foot-5 Bane with their young wing duo of Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner. Bane should fit right in considering he's also a career 41.0% 3-point shooter and the Magic needed someone who could stretch the floor. Bane isn't old by any means as he enters the prime of his career, so he fits the timeline well with Orlando's core. The Magic have been an up-and-coming team in the East, and with this trade, they're looking more dangerous going into next season. While they endured injuries this season, they finished 41-41 and got the No. 7 seed in the playoffs. Orlando has made the playoffs the past two seasons, falling in the first round both times. While the Magic had one of the best defenses in the league, consistent offense was an issue. Bane's inclusion should fit defensively while also giving the Magic a valuable floor-spacer. The East is looking wide open going into next season with the Celtics taking a step back, so it's no surprise to see teams making significant swings. The Grizzlies are in an interesting spot. They looked like they were going to take some steps toward being a contender themselves over the past few seasons. Plus, they went 48-34 this past season. But instead of investing further into their core of Bane, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Ja Morant, they elected to sell off a piece instead. Advertisement Now, considering the draft assets the Grizzlies just got from Orlando, that sets them up for any future moves they could make. The Kevin Durant trade sweepstakes are starting to get momentum ahead of the 2025 NBA Draft as three teams are at the top of his list. Per ESPN's Shams Charania, the Heat, Spurs and Rockets are Durant's preferred trade destinations. Charania reports that Durant would sign long-term extensions with each of those franchises. Durant, 36, is on an expiring $54.7 million deal. So teams looking to trade for the All-Star could be looking to keep him beyond just the 2025-26 season. Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists last season in 62 games, so even though he's getting older, it's clear he can still impact the game at a high level. Advertisement Charania originally reported several teams were hoping to trade for one of the best scorers of all-time. He also reported that the Suns "have made clear to six-to-eight seriously interested teams that they will make the best deal for the franchise." So, Durant could still end up on a separate team outside of his preferred list. The Heat could make a big swing if they landed Durant, though it could get costly. Miami was mediocre last season, finishing 37-45 after trading Jimmy Butler midseason. While they showed some life to earn the No. 8 seed in the playoffs by getting through the play-in tournament, all they got was a sweep at the hands of the No. 1-seeded Cavaliers in the first round. While there have been other trade rumors, where Durant ends up is the big early question mark of the offseason.
