
Giving young people the vote is an inspired move
We had already established our Scottish Youth Parliament which is consulted by the Scottish Parliament on all issues affecting children and young people. The UK and Welsh Youth Parliaments were created much later.
Many adults do not think that 16-17-year-olds are smart enough, and do not have enough experience of life to be be trusted to vote. Many adults do not even bother to vote and are no more knowledgeable about the many complex political issues our parliaments need to address, so why do they argue that we do not need to listen to our children? Our children are having to live with the horrendous problems of sexual exploitation, homelessness, poverty, drug barons exploiting them and their families, lack of mental health services, bullying and violence in schools, economic decline and climate change.
We should be doing everything we can to convince children that democracy can work for them, that they can contribute their idealism, their energy and their solutions to child and youth issues that they have more knowledge of than adults.
With fewer children reading newspapers, watching or listening to the news, to inform them on political matters, yes there is a danger that TikTok and other powerful social media could influence how they will use their votes. But this is already a problem for adult voters.

Change Holyrood voting system
With elections for Holyrood taking place next year, I wonder how many of your readers are aware of just how grossly unfair the method of electing our MSPs is compared to the arrangements in place for the Welsh and Northern Irish Assemblies?
Having gained 47.7% of the total votes cast in 2021, the SNP won 62 of the 73 constituency seats. If the flawed system of first past the post had operated for [[Holyrood]], the [[SNP]] would have won a thumping majority, as the Tories won only five constituency seats and Labour just two. However, the 56 regional seats were allocated using the d'Hondt method. It is worth remembering that these MSPs are chosen by their parties; they are not individuals whom we have actually voted for on a ballot paper. This method saw the [[SNP]] gain only two additional seats, leaving it with a total of 64 seats, just one short of an overall majority. Meanwhile the Tories picked up 26 regional seats and Labour 20. It is worth reminding ourselves that at the last UK General Election, Labour won 411 seats out of the total of 650 with just 37.7% of the votes cast.
Compare the arrangements here in Scotland with the election procedures operating in the other two devolved assemblies. In Northern Ireland the 90 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) are all elected by Single Transferable Vote (STV) with each voter able to rank the candidates and vote for however many candidates are on the ballot paper. The d'Hondt system is then used but only to determine the allocation of positions in the country's executive government. It is not used to allocate additional seats in the Assembly. Why do the same voting arrangements not apply to [[Holyrood]]?
In Wales, 40 of the Assembly members are voted using the first past the post system with the remaining 20 seats allocated using a form of the d'Hondt system. This is where the arrangements applied here in Scotland are so unfair. Whereas in Wales just 33% of the available regional seats are awarded using the d'Hondt system, here in Scotland it is 49%. Dividing the population of Scotland by the number of regional seats gives us one regional seat per 98,000 of the population. Compare this with Wales, where a similar sum gives us one regional seat per 155,000 of the population. So why do we have so many regional MSPs in Scotland?
It is widely believed that the d'Hondt method as applied here in Scotland was insisted on by Tony Blair. It is hard not to believe that it was chosen deliberately to make it almost impossible for the SNP to ever obtain a working majority of MSPs. Surely we should be electing our MSPs using the STV system that we use when electing our local government councillors.

Scotland's raw deal
The election of 37 Scottish MPs at the last General Election has been a disaster for Scotland, as these MPs have effectively been voiceless in Keir Starmer's UK Government, which won a large majority at Westminster with only 20% of the votes of the electorate.
With the commendable exception of Brian Leishman, these Scottish MPs have toed the London-orchestrated party line and remained silent while Scotland has been stitched up. Pensioners, children, Waspi women, the disabled and the poor have been denied the support one would expect of a purportedly socialist party while, contrary to the rhetoric, major deals on industrial infrastructure have been committed to projects in England without comparable investment in Scotland to benefit the workers of this country.
The Acorn CCS Project in Scotland was set to go ahead yet £22 billion was committed by the UK Government to nascent projects in England while Acorn and Scottish Cluster partners have been advised they may receive a token amount of around £200 million in development funding. This same relatively paltry amount of around £200m is what may be paid out by the UK Government 'to support the area's economic transition' while the Grangemouth refinery is shut down and hundreds of workers lose their jobs; yet the same Labour UK Government immediately committed to maintaining operations at the loss-making Lindsey Oil Refinery while refusing to reveal the cost to taxpayers. This follows UK Government funding of £2.5bn to keep Scunthorpe's British Steel plant open.
As if this continued heavily-distorted UK infrastructure investment wasn't bad enough for Scotland, the Labour Party has rowed back from repealing the Tory's Internal Market Act which further restricts the already limited powers of the Scottish Government. To add insult to injury, we now learn that the Secretary of State for Scotland, Ian Murray (aka Starmer's Scottish poodle), has the audacity to claim he has no role in delivering devolution deals for Scottish cities as disingenuous justification for Glasgow and Edinburgh not receiving the funding provided by the [[UK Government]] for City Region deals in England ("Glasgow and [[Edinburgh]] need both of our governments to step up on devolution", [[The Herald]], July 16).
In the 2026 Holyrood election it is important that everyone who believes in democracy and cares for the futures of our children to grow up, study, live and prosper in Scotland, gets out and votes for a party that will speak up for the right of the people of Scotland to determine their own future via the directly-elected Scottish Parliament.

A major worry for Ireland
Martin Togneri contends 'the evidence of over-reliance on inward investment in Ireland is sparse" (Letters, July 8). Irish government statisticians, the Bank of Ireland, and independent researchers beg to differ.
Multinationals (many with global reach) represent less than 3% of the active business base in Ireland. Their economic impact, however, is vastly disproportionate. These corporates account for 80-85% of the value of Irish exports, 50% of employment in Ireland's trading sector, and the major part of the Government's corporate tax take. Repatriated profits alone account for around a quarter of Irish GDP.
Ireland also runs a consistently high trade surplus with the US (for example, €50 billion in 2024). Moreover, 70% of the flow of Ireland's inward investment hails from the US. Together these facts make the Irish economy especially vulnerable to Trump tariffs designed to re-balance trade and re-shore US jobs.

Migrant camp Labour vowed to shut will be expanded
An asylum camp on a former RAF base which Labour promised to shut is to be expanded to take more migrants in the face of a summer surge in Channel crossings. The Home Office announced the number of migrants housed on Wethersfield RAF base near Braintree, Essex will be increased by 445 from the current limit of 800 to 1,225 as a contingency. Sir Keir Starmer pledged in July, just before the election, that he believed Wethersfield 'needs to close' as Labour sought to move asylum seekers off large sites and out of hotels. The two other major sites identified by the Tories – the Bibby Stockholm barge and RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire – have both been abandoned and will be shut by Labour as accommodation for asylum seekers. However, the Home Office is facing a continued surge in migrants crossing the Channel with more than 24,000 having reached the UK so far this year, up 45 per cent on last year. In an updated statement, the Home Office said Wethersfield regular occupancy was now just under 800 but there were 445 contingency bed spaces 'which can be brought into use to help manage short-term pressures across the wider asylum accommodation estate.' 'If called upon, the contingency bed spaces will only be utilised on a temporary basis until such time as the wider accommodation estate is able to manage demand, and the number accommodated at Wethersfield will be reduced back down to 800 bed spaces as soon as possible thereafter,' it said. 'Any increase in inflow onto the site to use contingency bed spaces will be gradual (increasing the maximum inflow from the normal 60 per week to 100 per week) and subject to the same rigorous procedures and reviews as for regular occupancy inflow.' MDP Wethersfield in Essex is just 30 miles from the scene of confrontations over migrants being housed at a hotel in Epping and has been home to hundreds of single male asylum seekers since July 2023. The Tories, Essex Police and Crime Commissioner Roger Hirst and Epping district council have urged the Home Office to close the Bell Hotel and move the migrants out. A further protest by around 1,000 people is expected at the hotel on Thursday. The Epping protests were triggered when Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, a 38-year-old asylum seeker from Ethiopia, was charged with the sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl. Mr Kebatu denied the charge when he appeared at Chelmsford magistrates' court on July 17. 'Failed to reduce small boat crossings' Shadow Housing Secretary James Cleverly, whose constituency covers Wethersfield, urged ministers to shut it. 'I was never happy that asylum seekers were held at Wethersfield and while Home Secretary, secured a cap on the numbers of asylum seekers at there. I remain opposed to any increase,' he said. 'Starmer said the site needs to close, but is now increasing numbers. He and Cooper are doing this because they scrapped the Rwanda plan and failed to reduce small boat crossings. The first half of the year has the highest number of arrivals numbers on record. 'I will keep pushing the Government to reverse this decision and close the site as soon as possible.' Shadow Foreign Secretary Priti Patel, a local MP who has also campaigned against the use of the site as an asylum camp, said: 'In opposition Labour said they'd close this site down but now they are expanding it because of their stark failure to get to grips with illegal migration. 'Keir Starmer and Yvette Cooper opposed every new law I advanced to deal with dangerous people smuggling gangs, including life sentences, and they scrapped my Rwanda partnership, which would have meant illegal migrants being sent there rather than Wethersfield and hotels. 'Labour's dishonesty, incompetence and lack of transparency is making this situation worse and encouraging more illegal migrants to come to Britain.'

Whose side are you on? As Manchester Airport thug who attacked female cops is found GUILTY, top Tories accuse 'shameful' Labour ministers of failing to fully support police when fight footage first emerged
Senior Tories have demanded apologies from Labour ministers over a lack of support for police officers brutally attacked at Manchester Airport. Chris Philp attacked the home secretary for questioning police standards after a female officer had her nose broken in the melee last July. And Robert Jenrick blasted leader of the House of Commons Lucy Powell for raising concerns about police conduct in Parliament over the shocking brawl. One of two brothers who brawled with officers before claiming to the court he was the victim of police brutality has now been convicted of assaulting two female cops and a male passenger. Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, 20, was found guilty of attacking PC Lydia Ward and PC Ellie Cook in the car park pay station of Terminal 2 on July 23 last year. He was also found guilty of headbutting holidaymaker Abdulkareem Ismaeil. Shortly after the fight, footage emerged which the court head was allegedly of PC Zachary Marsden kicking Amaaz in the head – it prompted anti-police protests with a number of prominent Labour politicians voicing concern about police conduct. But there was a fierce backlash when leaked CCTV also subsequently shown to the court appeared to show a violent unprovoked assault to which PC Marsden and two female colleagues had been subjected just seconds earlier. Before all the leaked footage which was subsequently seen in court provided a fuller picture of what transpired, Labour MP for Rochdale Paul Waugh criticised the police, saying: 'Our police face a very difficult job every day in keeping us all safe, but they themselves know that they have to expect the highest standards of conduct in their duties.' Leader of the House of Commons Lucy Powell, herself the Labour MP for Manchester Central, said she would pass his comments on to Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and added: 'Clearly the footage is incredibly disturbing and there's understandably a lot of concern, particularly in his constituency because it was his constituent affected.' And Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said she understood 'the widespread distress' the footage had caused, and said she had spoken to police about the 'urgent steps' they were taking. She had added that it was 'essential' police had the trust of communities, and the public 'rightly expect high standards from those in charge of keeping us safe'. Shadow home secretary Chris Philp said Ms Cooper's comments at the time showed she had been more interested in criticising the police than standing up for brave officers injured in the line of duty. 'A female officer had her nose broken by this vile thug, and the Home Secretary had nothing to say about that when it happened,' he said. 'Instead, her statement referred to the importance of the 'trust of communities' and questioned police standards. 'It is shameful that Yvette Cooper's statement did not include any mention of the police officers who were attacked at Manchester airport last year even though it has been reported that she was aware they had been injured when she made it.' Constable Lydia Ward, who jurors heard is heavily pregnant, told of being 'terrified' after coming under attack - as footage of her injuries were was shown to a court And shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick said many were too quick to judge the police before they knew the full story. 'Those Labour politicians' who he claimed had rushed to judgement 'before awaiting the full facts should be ashamed,' he said. 'The cabinet minister, Lucy Powell, mistakenly raised concerns in the House of Commons. She should issue a full public apology. 'Police officers do a difficult job. They don't always get it right. But if we're to fight crime and make our country safe again, the police need to know we've got their backs when they tackle violent offenders.' Ms Cooper said she had always offered strong support to police officers who face appalling situations every day. 'I have spoken with Greater Manchester Police about this incident to ensure the officers get the support they need because it is important that they do,' she said. 'At the time, Greater Manchester Police referred that case to make sure it was fully investigated, and it was. It has been investigated properly by the CPS, who bought charges and to make sure that all the circumstances were investigated.' Jurors at Liverpool Crown Court could not reach majority verdicts on either Amaaz or his elder brother Muhammed Amaad, 26, for assault causing actual bodily harm on PC Zachary Marsden. The Crown Prosecution Service will now seek a retrial of both brothers in relation to the allegations that Amaaz and Amaad assaulted PC Marsden causing actual bodily harm, Paul Greaney KC told the court.

Lorna Slater says she has the experience to remain co-leader of the party
One of those candidates is Lorna Slater who has been co-leader for the last six years. On Wednesday morning the Lothians MSP was in her local park speaking to the media. She outlined why she believes that The Scottish Greens are in the ascendancy. She said: 'The Scottish Greens have really grown, and our success over the last few years has been really significant. With going into government for the first time, increasing our number of MSPs and of course, our number of councillors across the country, Greens are more influential than ever. 'In next year's Holyrood election, we have the far right coming to Scotland with an anti-trans, anti-immigrant, racist agenda. Climate denial has already arrived in The Scottish Parliament, and The Scottish Greens need to clearly stand against that.' Asked about the Deposit Return Scheme which was disastrous for The Scottish Government and for Ms Slater personally, she explained that the legislation was already in place – and that she had tried hard to implement it. She said: 'The legislation was passed in 2020 before I was elected, and it was my job to get it launched in Scotland. We were weeks away from launch. 'Biffa the contractor had sites all over Scotland. We had businesses all over Scotland who had their reverse vending machines installed. We were ready to go for launch when the UK Government, spearheaded by Alister Jack, decided to shut down the scheme. 'That was so frustrating, and it was an abuse of Scottish devolution, of the Scotland Act, because Scotland, under the Scotland Act, has the power to implement those kind of schemes. 'Unfortunately, post Brexit, that internal market act now exists, which the UK Government can use to stop Scotland from taking forward recycling schemes. 'Fortunately, now the UK Government has finally, after years of prevarication, passed the legislation for their deposit return scheme down in England. So we will be getting a deposit return scheme in Scotland, but unfortunately, that will be on England's schedule instead of the schedule voted for by The Scottish Parliament.' She also explained that the Greens had a range of achievements against their name including the free bus travel for under 22 year olds. She continued: 'The next co leaders will be sharing a platform with Nigel Farage, and Russell Findlay, who are climate denying, anti immigration, and anti trans. The Scottish Greens need to push back against that, and I've got the experience and the confidence. I'm the last woman party leader standing in Scotland, and I want to be on that platform, taking them on with an anti racist, human rights agenda where we're looking at actually making Scotland a fairer and greener place, tackling the climate crisis and continuing to put in place policies that matter to people.' The nominated candidates are: Dominic Ashmole, Ross Greer MSP, Gillian Mackay MSP and Lorna Slater MSP. Any combination of the four candidates may be elected and the election process opens on 13 August, closes on 22 August and the results will be published on 29 August.
