
Penguin poop is creating more clouds. Here's how
The most widespread penguin species, there are currently an estimated 10 million Adélie penguins, according to the International Fund for Animal Welfare.
The penguins themselves are too small to see from above, but their excrement is not. Also known as guano, the old bird poop builds up on rocky and icy surfaces over time. It can be seen in shades of white, red, and pink. The color that is expelled depends on what these flightless birds eat. With a krill diet, for example, turns it out pinker. Whereas, a largely fishy diet turns their poop whiter.
But, the color isn't the only magic associated with Adélie penguin poop.
Researchers say that ammonia released from the guano could help to protect them from the increasingly dangerous effects of human-caused climate change. The sea ice Adélie penguins rely on to survive is dwindling, as it is increasingly threatened by climate change. However, ammonia released from their poop may be contributing to increased regional cloud formation that halts ice loss and protects their habitat.
'There are connections between things that happen on our natural planet that we just don't necessarily expect,' Matthew Boyer, an atmospheric scientist at the University of Helsinki, told The Washington Post. 'And this is one of them.'
Boyer was the lead author of the related research, which was recently published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment.
Ammonia, which is a naturally occurring chemical compound often used in disinfecting products, can ramp up cloud formation when it chemically interacts with gases that contain the smelly element sulphur. This reaction increases the creation of particles in the air that give water vapor — water in its gaseous form — a surface to condense upon: changing it into a liquid. That's how clouds are formed. Ammonia clouds have been found on Jupiter, and over Southeast Asia.
The resulting clouds can serve as insulating layers in the atmosphere, as well as help to reduce surface temperatures and keep the surrounding sea ice from melting.
Last year, the sea ice extent in the Southern Ocean around Antarctica was the second smallest on record. This March saw Antarctic sea ice plunge, as well. The sea ice, which is more reflective than water, plays a significant role in keeping polar regions cool.
'We can hypothesize that there will be a cooling effect from the clouds because, in general, that is the most prominent effect of clouds in the atmosphere,' Boyer explained.
To reach their conclusions, Boyer and his colleagues measured the concentration of ammonia in the air at a site near Marambio Base in the winter of 2023. They were downwind of the colony of 60,000 Adélie penguins, and their poop. When the wind blew from that direction, they found the concentration of ammonia in the air increased to more than 1,000 times higher than the baseline level. Furthermore, it was still more than 100 times higher than the baseline after the penguins had migrated from the area by the end of February.
To confirm that this was the direct result of the guano's ammonia, they took several additional atmospheric measurements on a single day, finding that the number and size of particles at the site sharply increased when the wind blew from the colony. Just three hours later, they observed a period of fog that they say was likely the result of the increased particles.
Although the specific interaction between penguins and the Antarctic climate is currently poorly understood, Antarctic ecosystems are facing significant pressures because of human-driven climate change that is driving sea ice loss as global warming continues. Warmer waters may mean less of the phytoplankton that krill and fish eat, reducing the penguins' food supply.
The researchers say that their conclusions emphasize the importance of protecting penguins, which play a vital role in balancing their ecosystems. Although these birds may only be just over two feet tall, their contribution may be massive.
'The oceans and the penguins are influencing the atmosphere and actually influencing the local climate in Antarctica,' said Boyer. 'The local changes in Antarctica will have an impact on global climate.'

Without it, there would be no photosynthesis; without photosynthesis there would be no complex life on Earth. Organic carbon is ultimately made from CO2 and the basic building blocks of life are organic carbon. DNA is organic carbon. CO2 is also the 'principal control knob governing Earth's temperature'. There needs to be just the right amount in the atmosphere to produce the conditions for life. Brannen points out, 'when CO2 has varied between 0.1 per cent and 0.018 per cent of the atmosphere, it has been the difference between alligators in the Arctic Circle on the one hand, and an Antarctica's worth of ice burying North America on the other'. Brannen takes us on a grand tour of billions of years of history to prove his title, the story of CO2 is the story of everything. The so-called Cambrian Explosion, more than 500 million years ago, produced what Brannen calls 'nightmarish one-off experiments at the dawn of animal life'. In the Carboniferous Period, 150 million years later, there were 'dragonflies the size of seagulls… scorpions the size of golden retrievers and millipedes the size of alligators'. Bizarre trees, known as lepidendrons, also thrived. With bright green trunks, they would become the coal to supercharge the Industrial Revolution. The history of life on Earth has been punctuated by mass extinctions. The worst of them by far, sometimes known as the 'Great Dying', took place at the end of the Permian Period, around 250 million years ago. The result of volcanic eruptions in which 'a planet-deranging amount of carbon dioxide' came 'billowing out of Earth'. Almost every living thing died, although enough survived to reseed the planet. Brannen elegantly moves through the Earth's epochs. The Middle Miocene was 'the last time… when CO2 was as high as it might be again as soon as 2050'. The world was a different place. 'A verdant Greenland… lived up to its name', while turtles and parrots lived in Siberia. In the Pliocene Epoch, three million years ago, CO2 fell to 400 parts per million in the atmosphere. Level stayed below that amount until rising again in 2016. The story heads towards 'the CO2 Supereruption' caused by our activities. We're 'emitting CO2 ten times faster' than in the last mass extinction. At this rate, we're not going to get a zero-carbon future or, as Brannen puts it, 'likely even a livable one'. His story of CO2 comes to a chastening conclusion. There is still time for us to save ourselves, but action is needed now.

How a flood of cheap British octopus is changing restaurant menus
They've been described as the Einsteins of the sea and are so intelligent they can navigate mazes and use tools. But today, the common octopus is finding its way onto the plates of diners across the country after an influx of the cephalopods to British oceans not seen for 75 years. The sudden increase, known as an octopus 'bloom', is primarily due to warming ocean temperatures caused by climate change. The common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) is usually found in the Mediterranean, while Britain's cooler waters are typically home to the curled octopus (Eledone cirrhosa). 'We had an unusually warm winter this year,' said Bryce Stewart, senior research fellow at the Marine Biological Association in Plymouth. 'Those warm temperatures have continued through the spring and into summer, which favours the common octopus as it's a warm-water species.' Analysis of Met Office data suggests the average surface temperature of UK waters in the first seven months of the year was more than 0.2C higher than any year since 1980. Stewart said this year's bloom was the largest since 1950. 'Fishermen started to see more octopus off the south coast of England in 2022 and then more again in 2023. It eased off last year but this year numbers have exploded,' he said. In June, the Marine Management Organisation recorded 400 tonnes of octopuses caught off the British coast, compared with about ten tonnes in the same month last year. Last month provisional figures showed it was almost 500. Stewart's team is working with the University of Plymouth to track the octopuses, using underwater cameras in the hope of predicting future blooms. But for British restaurateurs, the increase has created a unique opportunity to use what was previously a prohibitively expensive ingredient. Rick Toogood, head chef of Little Prawn in Padstow, Cornwall, and Prawn on the Lawn in Islington, north London, said that serving octopus previously meant importing it frozen from Spain at up to £20 per kg. 'Now that there is quite a bit of octopus it's come down to around £11 per kilogram,' he said. 'We obviously want to source as much as we can from our shores and this means if we want to put octopus on the menu we can get British-caught pretty much whenever we want it.' Toogood said the rising ocean temperature also meant an increase in other fish used to warmer waters, including bluefin tuna. On Thursday afternoon he received a 40kg bluefin that would have cost more than £1,200 last year. This time he only paid £650. Isaac McHale, the head chef and co-owner of Bar Valette in Shoreditch, east London, said he had also been serving up an abundance of tuna, but the star of the show became the octopus once he heard of the bloom at the start of the summer. 'Octopus is typically not very common in the UK so we don't have this history of eating octopus,' he said. McHale said the curled octopus, which has a single row of suckers on each tentacle, was smaller and tougher than the larger common octopus. In other words, 'not great eating', the chef said. In contrast, the common octopus, which is larger and has two rows of suckers, is versatile enough to be cooked either hot and fast or low and slow. Although the bloom has been a boon for chefs, not everyone has been excited. The common octopus feeds on crustaceans including crabs, lobsters and scallops, whose populations have plummeted on the south coast. Mike Roach, deputy chief executive of the National Federation of Fishermen's Organisations, said some vessels in Devon had a 'complete absence of crab and lobster in their catches'. The Marine Management Organisation recorded that the brown crab catch was just over 400 tonnes last month, almost 200 tonnes fewer than the same month in 2023. Roach said the 'short-term influx' of octopus could mean a 'reduction in crustacean and shellfish species that are relatively slow growing and may take a long time to recover from this bloom of new predators'. In May, the octopus bloom forced Plymouth city council to relax regulations that required fishermen to include a small gap in lobster and crab pots for undersized crustaceans to escape through. Because octopuses don't have bones, they are able to squeeze through tiny holes to feast on the shellfish inside. • How the ocean has changed in Attenborough's 99 years (it's not all bad) Animal rights campaigners are also concerned. In 2022, parliament recognised the highly intelligent octopus as a 'sentient being' as part of the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act. Elisa Allen, vice-president of programmes for the campaign group Peta, said: 'These extraordinary animals deserve our respect and to be left in peace, not pieces.' The bloom is unlikely to last for long because the overabundance of octopuses is rapidly depleting their main food source by gorging on lobsters, crabs and shellfish. But while it continues, chefs such as Toogood will continue finding inventive ways to serve it up to hungry diners. At Little Prawn, he cooks the octopus with aromatics for two hours until tender. He then slices it and uses a blowtorch to give it a smoky flavour, before serving it with fresh tomatoes and an olive brine. Each octopus salad dish costs £13.50 and the chef said it was 'incredibly popular'. McHale said it was important to thoroughly clean the suckers with salt and water before cooking. 'Then you slowly dip the tendrils into a large pot of boiling water over and over again, which helps the tentacles to curl in an attractive way,' he said. At Bar Valette, McHale boils them for an hour before finishing them on a barbecue. At The Clove Club, he serves it alongside arroz brut, a rice soup from Mallorca. McHale said he hoped the inflated octopus supply lasted a little longer. 'Part of the joy of being a chef is getting to play with new ingredients and find ways that you can make them delicious,' he said. 'Octopus is one of those things that most people in the UK might turn their noses up at. But it's nice to change their perceptions and show that it can be really delicious.'

Final snow patch melts, for the fourth year running
Summer heatwaves in Scotland have resulted in the country being declared snow-free for only the tenth time since the mid-1800s. Experts tracking the survival of snow patches around Scottish mountains have recorded the disappearance of the final snow patch of 2025 as the country experiences one of several heatwaves this year. It marks the fourth consecutive year that all Scotland's patches have disappeared. Seven of the ten snow-free years have been recorded since the turn of the century. It is also the most remote corrie in the Cairngorms, requiring significant effort just to get there.' Ad hoc records have been kept for two centuries, first by the Scottish Mountaineering Club then by the naturalists Seton Gordon (1900-1940) and Adam Watson (1940-2000). He said 'We are seeing less snow falling in winter and spring in general across the Highlands, which is the main reason for snow patches disappearing more often.' The Scottish Avalanche Information Service reported the lowest number of avalanches in 40 years, and described Scotland's most recent snowpack as 'lean'. Historically, most of Scotland's longest lasting snow patches lie in northeast-facing corries, where moisture-laden southwesterly Atlantic winds dump snow above 2,000ft. The snow blows over cliffs, settling in sheltered areas shielded from the warming winds of spring and summer. 'The depth needed to sustain the patches through summer and autumn is simply not there,' Cameron said. 'This is backed up by the decreased number of skier days experienced across the main ski resorts in Scotland. The reasons for this are debated, but a changing climate must certainly be considered the biggest one.'
