Picture having a conversation with someone from the past simply by gazing into your cat's eyes. That's where the inspiration begins for one of 2025's most innovative light novels.
Miri Lives in the Cat's Eyes
is an emotional and daring
supernatural mystery
by
Taiga Shiki
, illustrated by
Isshiki
and translated into English by Michael Blaskowsky. The novel was published on March 25, 2025 by
Yen On
and carries a T+ rating for teen and older reader audiences. The novel is a mix of romance, suspense, and just enough magical realism to leave you wondering what's real.
A strange power, a chatty cat, and a murder in the making
The central character here is Youichi Kamisuki, a reserved college student with a strange power: when he peers into a person's eyes, he can perceive his memories. But things only get stranger when he peers into his pet cat's eyes and views something impossible: a girl named Miri.
Miri isn't a dream. She's an actual woman living in another era, and she possesses her own powers. She can see into people's futures through their eyes, unlike Youichi. They both figure out that they can talk to each other through the cat's eyes even though they exist in separate timelines.
But this isn't just a cute fantasy. Miri delivers a terrifying warning: a series of murders will soon happen at Youichi's university, and he's the only one who can stop them.
Romance meets murder in a time-bending mystery
As Youichi makes efforts to get to know more about Miri, he finds himself entangled in a mystery surrounding his university's drama club. When a member of the club is murdered during lockdown, Miri encourages him to join the club himself so that he can investigate from the inside. She even teaches him acting—all through their strange bond.
The crime scenes aren't standard either. One of the chilling moments occurs during a Zoom rehearsal, demonstrating how the novel leverages the reality of COVID-19 to introduce new twists to the murder mystery genre. It combines real-life challenges such as remote learning and social distancing with the threat and tension of a thriller.
COVID-19 Isn't just a backdrop
Contrary to most fantasy books, Miri Lives in the Cat's Eyes does not turn its back on the actuality of the 2020 pandemic. On the contrary, COVID-19 is at the heart of the mystery. Isolation, online classes, and medical anxiety all feature prominently in how the murders occur and how they get solved.
Who Is Miri, and where is she now?
As the narrative progresses, Youichi not only searches for a murderer but also for the truth regarding Miri. Who is she, actually? Where is she today? And why is she involved with the drama club?
Their increasing connection provides an emotional depth to the story. Youichi comes to care for Miri, but there is always one giant question: Are they even in the same time period?
A charming combination of genres with wig surprises
With supernatural abilities, time-travel-like dialogue, and a complicated murder mystery at its core, this novel is in a class of its own. It combines the emotional draw of a romance, the tension of a crime thriller, and the dreamlike quality of magical realism. Consider Your Name crossed with Danganronpa, but with a pandemic twist.
Why you should read Miri Lives in the Cat's Eyes
Whether you're into Japanese light novels or new to the genre, this book offers something different. It explores grief, love, and fate all while trying to stop a serial killer through a cat's memories.
If you like tales such as Erased, Orange, or When Marnie Was There, this will hit you straight in the heart. With its brevity and rapid pace, it's ideal for readers who are looking for an instant but unforgettable read.
Miri Lives in the Cat's Eyes is finally out in print and digital English. Don't miss out on one of the year's most original light novels.

It's just about choosing interesting scripts and trusting in the writing and the maker and seeing how it goes from there. It's difficult in a way where you can't predict anything. But as an artist, that gives me the freedom that I'm just going to pick things that I believe in. I think my generation of actors will be like the herald of this change and I'm excited about it. ‘Your Friends & Neighbors' series review: Jon Hamm is riveting in this black satire

Your Friends & Neighbors begins in medias res with Coop (Jon Hamm), a hedge fund manager, waking up in a mansion next to a body. We go back four months, when Coop's evil, greedy boss, Jack Bailey (Corbin Bernsen), fires him as a means to acquire his clients. We see a collage of Coop's life from being young, poor, driven and in love with Mel (Amanda Peet), to the birth of their two children, Tori (Isabel Marie Gravitt) and Hunter (Donovan Colan), and acquiring bigger houses and cars and the all-important corner office. Once you are at the pinnacle, there is only way to go, and that is down. So Coop walks in on Mel cheating on him with his best friend and former NBA player, Nick (Mark Tallman). He moves out of the family home into a rented house in the same posh Westmont community. He has an on-off sexual relationship with Sam (Olivia Munn), who is also going through a contentious divorce with her diner-running husband, Paul (Jordan Gelber), who has traded Sam in for a younger wife. After he loses his job, Coop's business manager, Barney (Hoon Lee), tells him he can live off his savings and keep his family in the style they are used to for six months. With no suitable job offers coming, Coop is in a desperate situation when he realises his friends and neighbours have piles of stuff including drawers full of watches, and rolls of cash that they will not miss. Your Friends & Neighbors (English) Creator: Jonathan Tropper Cast: Jon Hamm, Amanda Peet, Olivia Munn, Hoon Lee, Mark Tallman, Lena Hall, Aimee Carrero, Eunice Bae, Isabel Marie Gravitt, Donavan Colan Episodes: 9 Run-time: 46–56 minutes Storyline: When a divorced hedge fund manager is fired, he takes somewhat extreme measures to stay afloat And once he is on that slippery slope, he is propelled down a path he would not have considered a few months ago, which ends with him waking up next to a body with the head blown off. Along the way he meets with the pawnshop owner Lu (Randy Danson), and the housekeeper Elena (Aimee Carrero), who proves to be an invaluable resource, and a scary underground art dealer. While on the outside everything and everybody looks polished and pretty, there is plenty of rot and worms on the inside. It takes Ali (Lena Hall), Coop's bipolar, musician sister, to call out all the phonies in Westmont. Barney is under pressure from his rich wife, Grace (Eunice Bae), and her parents for an unending renovation. There are infidelities, children under pressure and $30,000 commodes as well as moments of genuine warmth. While Your Friends & Neighbors does not achieve Parasite-level black satire, it is bingeable for Hamm's extraordinary turn as Coop. Like Hamm's Don Draper in Mad Men, Coop is neither very likeable nor particularly heroic, which perversely makes him accessible to all of us who just trying to do the best we can for ourselves and those we care about. Hamm's Coop is self-aware and draws us into his mind with his inner monologue. One cannot help but grin at Coop dismissing one of his neighbours as an 'insecure narcissist whose entire self worth is wrapped up in what he owns,' or dismissing the 'crypto bros' as 'COIN - Collectors Only In Name.' Coop is discerning enough to realise entire industries are 'built to cash in on quiet desperation' and how rich people collect 'Scotch, cigars, smoked meats, custom golf clubs, and high-end escorts to stave off emptiness.' Lest you think Your Friends & Neighbors is all about poor little rich people, there is Elena saying, 'In life you don't get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate,' or her dismissing Coop with 'All you know how to be, is rich.' Your Friends & Neighbors is filled with colourful characters including Detective Lin (Sandrine Holt) and smart writing from the episode titles such as 'Theoretical Herpes' and 'When did we become these people?' to Elena saving Coop's number on her phone as George Clooney. Stealing the communion wafers from church was definitely a misstep, but otherwise Your Friends & Neighbors, provides enough food for thought and wry amusement through its nine episodes. Your Friends & Neighbors is currently streaming on Apple TV+

Pankaj Tripathi says he isn't 'scared' of AI days after his fake images as Baburao surface online: 'You have to live...'

Pankaj Tripathi is one of the most loved actors in Bollywood, who has carved his niche based on his pure and honest acting talent. After Paresh Rawal's exit from Hera Pheri 3, some AI-generated pictures circulated online that showed Pankaj Tripathi as Baburao. The images created quite a stir online and amid all this, the Criminal Justice 4 actor shared his views on the fake AI videos and fake information that often surface on social media. Days after his AI avatar as Paresh Rawal 's Baburao surfaced on the internet, Pankaj Tripathi in a new interview with Zoom, shared his views on the AI technology. He mentioned that he is not afraid or concerned about it. The veteran actor recalled reading an article in his childhood about science that emphasized that it is both a boon and a curse. Tripathi argued that if science is used meaningfully, then it is an amazing thing. However, if it is used without any meaning, it can be harmful. He asserted that every technology should've a meaningful use. He noted that if there is a technology, it is bound to have both kinds of uses. However, an individual should be aware that the content they're consuming is generated, real or original. He added, 'How much will you see and how much you will dissect or understand it? You have to live your life and work too. I am not scared because no matter how much technology evolves, human emotions have a lot of value and that is not going to change." For the unversed, it was just a couple of days back that Tripathi's AI-generated image went viral on the internet. It showed the actor styled with Paresh Rawal's Baburao's iconic thick-rimmed glasses and trademark hairstyle. He was also seen dressed in the character's familiar white dhoti and vest, complete with a gold chain and bracelet, reprising the classic look. On the professional front, Pankaj Tripathi is currently enjoying the release of his legal drama series, Criminal Justice 4. Directed by Rohan Sippy, the show also features Surveen Chawla, Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub, Asha Negi, Barkha Singh, Mita Vashisht, and Shweta Basu Prasad among others. It is currently streaming on JioHotstar.
