Carnie Wilson left 'sobbing' in bathroom after harsh comment from music exec
Carnie Wilson was asked something so upsetting in the '90s by a music executive that she ran to the bathroom crying.
Wilson, a member of the girl group Wilson Phillips, was recording her debut album with her sister Wendy Wilson and Chynna Phillips when a music executive allegedly made a comment about her weight.
Wilson revealed on the "Magnificent Others" podcast that the executive asked her, "What are we going to do about this weight problem of yours?"
"I remember running into the bathroom and just sobbing," Wilson said.
She noted that "he wound up really apologizing for it because I said, 'Unacceptable. Like, how you hurt me so badly when you did that.' And he said, 'I just can't believe I said that. I am so sorry.'"
"I remember running into the bathroom and just sobbing."
Wilson told host Billy Corgan that it took the music exec "years" to apologize to her. She recalled telling the exec, "You're so funny and so great. And then you f---ing were an a--hole for saying that to me. Why did you do that?"
Wilson continued, "It's like you lost control and you just really chose the wrong words. And were you really afraid that my fat was going to make us not successful?"
Corgan opted to lighten the conversation and joked, "See, if you'd been skinny, you would have sold 11 million." (Wilson Phillips sold 10 million copies of their debut album.)
His comment got a laugh from Wilson, who added, "Motherf---ers."
"That's how they think," Corgan noted.
Wilson also demonstrated how she was positioned in music videos.
"It was always, 'Hide Carnie' in the videos. I had to stay in this light for my chin," she said while showing how she had to place her hand over her face to block her chin.
"That's so humiliating," Corgan noted."But I sort of embraced my role. I kind of liked it. It was kind of like a power thing. I was different… and that's part of the armor I've had," Wilson said.
The group famously wore lingerie for their 1992 "You Won't See Me Cry" music video and Wilson explained her outfit, saying she was put in "these corsets that were sucking me in and trying to make me look as skinny as possible."
Wilson continued, "I was bleeding. I had sores on my waist from cinching and trying to look skinny. It was just awful."
Corgan said, "So what strikes me… if Wilson Phillips came out today, you would have been embraced in such a different way. You've had something to do with that body positivity stuff, but who you are and what makes you who you are, people would be so different. It must strike you as slightly ironic."
"It's ironic," Wilson said before adding, "but I never tapped into that negativity. I don't like negativity. I feel like everybody that made fun of me was just unhappy and it was an easy thing to do… it's sad because I love to lift people up… I could not understand why somebody would just make fun of me. Like, focus on the music. Who cares if I'm heavier than the other two?"

Nancy Wilson says she felt pressured to ditch the acoustics as Heart went for the mainstream in 1985
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. After seven albums, Nancy Wilson and Heart knew they needed a significant reset. Their first album for Capitol Records, 1985's self-titled effort which went on to sell five million copies, saw the band embracing the label's wishes, working with outside songwriters, and furthering their transition into a mainstream rock act. But one request was off the menu, and it saw Wilson clash with producer Ron Nevison. Passionworks, which arrived two years earlier and marked the end of the Epic Records era, hinted of a transition the band would put into overdrive under Capitol's rule. But, by the mid-'80s, Nevison recognized that the band's employment of acoustic guitars – a clear tie to their folky origins – were old hat and would struggle to resonate with contemporary audiences. Wilson, though, was unmoving. 'I felt a little pressurized, as my first love was always acoustic guitar,' she says in the June issue of Guitar World. 'That was the element that I brought when I joined Ann's band, the idea of embracing electric and acoustic sounds, much like Led Zeppelin. 'I guess the acoustic guitar was a little out of step with the digital '80s,' she accepts. 'On the live stage, it didn't really matter, as so many of our big songs did require me to play acoustic.' In the quest for harmony, a middle ground was struck. Songs like the raucous, glam rock–tinted opener If Looks Could Kill (co-written by Jack Conrad and Bob Garrett) were balanced by more classic Wilson-esque compositions like What He Don't Know, where acoustic guitars are a prominent part of the ornamentation. The instrument's presence on their eighth album may have been somewhat diminished, but it remained an important ingredient. In retrospect, Wilson says she is glad the band made the trade-offs they did. 1985's Heart was a huge success and it provided a much-needed shot in the arm. 'I think we'd reached the end of the average lifespan for most rock bands by that point,' she admits. 'We decided that if we wanted to survive, we probably needed to find a new manager and record company and have some kind of major reset. If we wanted to fit in with the whole new MTV era, we had to adapt to survive. '[Heart] revitalized the band. It took us up to a whole other level of global success, so there's nothing I regret about what we did or where we compromised, she develops.' And while the band embraced elements of '80s music trends, she confesses she found that 'grunge was a much-needed break from the corporate '80s sound.' Wilson, meanwhile, has named her favorite new guitarist, a young hotshot who's winning legions of fans.

"I'd already been planning to have a baby and I'd had an an embryo and was already planning to have a baby by a surrogate. So very, very, very early in dating, like three months into dating Ramona, I had to tell her, so I have a surrogate and it turns out the surrogate's pregnant," she recalled, noting it was a "huge thing" to say so early into a relationship. "Ramona just turned to me, was sitting at my kitchen table and she said, 'I love you and I'm gonna love your child just as much,' " she continued. "I was so shocked. "The surprising thing is that you never just walk out of the house and not have plans," Wilson told PEOPLE. "You can't just go, 'I feel like going to the movie cinema,' and just walk out of the house. No, no, no." "You have to plan what's happening with the baby," she continued. "Is the baby coming with you? Have the baby's meals been prepped? You've got to communicate about the baby's schedule, when her nap time is, all the things." Read the original article on People
