The new Superman movie is set to kick off the new DC Universe on the screens.
James Gunn-directed Superman, featuring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, is set to hit the theatres on July 11. The upcoming movie will launch the new DC Universe on the big screen. The film will follow Superman 's journey to reconcile his alien Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent, who is a reporter. The first reviews of Superman are in, and people have a lot to say.
Film critic Bryan Sudfield shared on X that the new Superman movie is a 'bold and faithful" take on the iconic superhero. He said, '#SUPERMAN soars with heart, humour, and style—a bold yet faithful take on the iconic hero. James Gunn sets a fresh tone while honouring the character's legacy, and David Corenswet shines with sincerity and strength. A promising, thrilling start to DC's new era."

Entertainment journalist Brandon Davis shared, 'David Corenswet portrays an exceptional iteration of #Superman with sincerity, heroism, purity, and inspirational traits. Corenswet & Rachel Brosnahan's chemistry for Clark and Lois is off the charts. Their relationship is an excellent driver, especially early."

But not all the reviews were positive. Movie critic Peter Howell noted that the movie lacks depth. He wrote, 'Not the super start to the DC Universe everybody had been hoping for. James Gunn is brilliant at conjuring spectacle and creating alien realms, not so great at storytelling. " He added, 'David Corenswet plays a boyishly sweet Superman, constantly getting his ass kicked; he'd be better as the lead in a Dudley Do-Right movie. Rachel Brosnahan makes a spiky Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor is more obnoxious than villainous." However, he thought that 'the real star of the show is superdog Krypto, who steals every scene he's in — I'd rather see a movie about him."

Meanwhile, Grace Randolph, a Critics' Choice member, wrote, 'This is the BEST #Superman movie to date. When James Gunn gets out of the way & lets his work speak for itself, it's incredible. It's not perfect, but darn close & made me a believer in Gunn's #DC."

Another Critics Choice member, Rachel Leishman, said, 'SUPERMAN reminds us that Clark Kent has always been a beacon of hope and the goodness that can exist in this world. James Gunn's vision is a comic book brought to life, and it bought a lightness and a happiness to one of the most beloved heroes around."

Besides David, the superhero film also features Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner / Green Lantern, and Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl.

Weapons dominates box office but theaters gearing up for slow months. Here's why

Zack Cregger's Weapons has become one of the year's breakout hits. Despite business declining by 43 per cent domestically and 33 per cent internationally, the film starring Julia Garner and Josh Brolin has raked in $148.8 million globally. This is yet another win for Warner Bros, which paid $38 million for rights to the project, according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, the weeks ahead look lighter with no major releases coming up. Theater chains in the US, too, are betting on smaller, riskier releases and hoping audiences keep showing up. Weapons shines at the box office.(X/@newlinecinema) The hit films no one saw coming The 2025 Box Office has been full of surprises. Few expected DC's Superman to outpace Marvel's Fantastic Four: First Steps or for Jurassic World Rebirth to eclipse them both with an $828 million haul. Original horror titles like Ryan Coogler's Sinners and Weapons proved that audiences are still willing to gamble on bold new ideas. Alamo Drafthouse's chief revenue officer, Mike Sherrill, told Variety that the success of the films shows that people will show up when they are given 'something fresh and exciting'. Also read: Weapons ending explained: What happened to the kids who vanished in Josh Brolin's film? The bleak weeks ahead The Variety report added that despite the momentum, the upcoming calendar looks barren. August will be closing with Ethan Coen's Honey Don't! and Darren Aronofsky's Caught Stealing, and the satire The Rose starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman. However, none are expected to generate blockbuster numbers. The first week of September will likely see a spark from the fifth instalment of the supernatural franchise The Conjuring: Last Rites and the filmed version of Broadway's Hamilton. According to Movie Insider, nine new titles will be debuting later in the month, which include: Lionsgate's The Long Walk, Sony's Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, and Paul Thomas Anderson's costly epic One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Chris Randleman, chief revenue officer at Flix Brewhouse, told Variety that none of the September releases look like they will make it big, but the volume will counteract it. A glimpse of hope in October and beyond The industry's next major bet is Disney's Tron: Ares, which is set to release on October 10. However, the real uptick in business is expected in late October and November when the following titles arrive: Mortal Kombat II, Predator: Badlands, Now You See Me: Now You Don't, Wicked: For Good, and Disney's Zootopia 2. Texas Capital Securities analyst Eric Wold told Variety that theaters will be able to endure the lull since they have recovered enough financially after the pandemic to sustain through a short-term slowdown. FAQs Q1: Why is the fall box office expected to be weak? The release calendar has fewer big-budget films, with most major titles delayed until October and November. Q2: Which films could help sustain theaters before October? The Conjuring: Last Rites, Hamilton, and smaller titles like Honey Don't! and The Roses may provide moderate boosts. Q3: What are the big upcoming blockbusters? Disney's Tron: Ares, Mortal Kombat II, Predator: Badlands, Now You See Me: Now You Don't, Wicked: For Good, and Zootopia 2. Q4: How are theaters adapting to slow months? Chains like AMC and Alamo are using discounts, premium screenings, and special events to attract audiences.

From The Rock to John Cena: Ranking WWE's biggest wrestlers-turned-actors

A major part of being in WWE, and of the job of a professional wrestler, is the ability to act. One of the biggest names of the modern era, John Cena, has built a 25-year career facing opponents who may have been more athletic or had a broader arsenal of moves. What kept him at the top, however, was his ability to cut promos, his commanding mic skills, and, for lack of a better word, his acting. Since acting is such an integral part of their craft, many wrestlers transition comfortably into Hollywood when the opportunity arises. The Hollywood Reporter has now released a list ranking the best wrestlers who made that leap. 1. Dave Bautista 'The Animal' Dave Bautista perfectly fit the bill when Hollywood needed a towering, larger-than-life figure who could bring both comedic relief and star power. His portrayal of Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy wasn't just convincing, it was outstanding. While most wrestlers end up typecast in roles that mirror their size and wrestling personas, Bautista had other plans. He distanced himself from WWE appearances and even slimmed down to a leaner physique to break away from his past image. With roles in films like Knock at the Cabin (2023), The Killer's Game (2024), and The Last Showgirl (2024), Bautista has proven his range and depth as an actor. 2. The Rock By far the biggest name on this list, both in terms of body of work and global fame, is Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. For over a decade, he has been an almost omnipresent force in Hollywood, headlining blockbusters and starring in one of the most influential franchises of all time, The Fast and the Furious saga. Beyond his countless cameos and TV ventures, Johnson cemented himself as the go-to star when filmmakers needed a larger-than-life figure who could toss villains around and follow it up with a perfectly timed quip. Long before Hollywood, WWE fans knew him as a natural showman with unmatched charisma and mic skills—talents that seamlessly translated to the big screen. Now, Johnson is set to take on what may be his most nuanced and challenging role yet in The Smashing Machine. 3. John Cena Very few men have dared to go toe-to-toe with John Cena in a verbal battle, and even fewer have walked away unscathed. After establishing himself as the 'face' of WWE, the move to Hollywood seemed like the natural next step, though the transition wasn't seamless. It wasn't until his scene-stealing role in Amy Schumer's Trainwreck that audiences began to see Cena's true acting potential. Since then, despite a few bumps along the way, he has built an impressive filmography by playing to his strengths. Today, John Cena has firmly carved his space in Hollywood, most notably as DC's Peacemaker, with the hit show's second season set to premiere on August 28. 4. 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper One of the biggest names in the wrestling world, Roddy Piper was unapologetically himself in the ring, and he carried that same energy into his acting career. His cult-classic film They Live, directed by John Carpenter, wasn't just a hit but a cultural moment that showcased Piper's acting chops. Though he didn't appear in many projects, 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper still left an indelible mark. 5. Adam Copeland Equipped with one of the greatest entrances in WWE history, Adam 'Edge' Copeland was a superstar from day one. He embodied the ultimate cool, dangerous bad guy—the kind your parents warned you about. The actor's roles in Vikings and Haven showcased his acting potential. Unlike Dave Bautista, however, Edge chose a different path, making a triumphant return to WWE after a nine-year hiatus 6. Kevin Nash As part of the NWO (New World Order), Kevin Nash was one of the toughest men to deal with during his WWE days, making several high-profile returns—one of which even brought CM Punk to his knees. Casting Nash in Hollywood poses a unique challenge, and it's not just about his towering height; assigning serious roles to someone of his stature can be tricky. Yet Nash pulled it off, delivering a memorable performance as Tarzan in the Magic Mike series. 7. Hulk Hogan Hulk Hogan deserves credit for paving the way for future wrestlers. He turned wrestling into a global attraction and made it mainstream, which naturally led the WWE's biggest name to make frequent trips to Hollywood. However, his acting chops didn't quite translate on screen. Apart from a few notable cameos, none of Hogan's films achieved critical or commercial success. Still, even if he couldn't replicate his WWE dominance, Hogan managed to crack open Hollywood's armor. 8. Paul Wight Another wrestler who carried both the advantages and challenges of his massive stature is Paul 'Big Show' Wight. A celebrated in-ring performer with a storied WWE career, Wight found it difficult to carve out space in Hollywood. Most of his on-screen appearances came in comical roles. Still, credit to Wight for making the effort to explore the world beyond the ring. 9. Jesse Ventura In this case, the Hollywood career may well rival—or even surpass—the wrestling one. Jesse 'The Body' Ventura was never the biggest name in WWE, but he managed to land numerous cameos, guest spots, and voiceover roles. His most notable appearance was in Arnold Schwarzenegger's Predator. 10. Andre the Giant Even for those unfamiliar with his wrestling legacy, it's easy to see why casting André the Giant posed challenges. He spoke broken English in real life and stood at an astonishing 7'4″. Yet despite these hurdles, his portrayal of the gentle giant in the iconic The Princess Bride is still loved by audiences all over the world.
