Audit underway for three suspected sunstroke deaths in nagpur
Nagpur: The health department will conduct death audits of three suspected sunstroke victims found within the city limits. Police recovered the bodies from different locations between April 20 and April 26, during which the maximum temperature neared 45 degrees Celsius.
The TOI had earlier reported that the bodies of 10 unidentified persons, believed to have been exposed to the extreme heat, were found within city limits. Police have sent these bodies to mortuaries at medical colleges.
Civil surgeon Dr ND Rathod stated that three of these suspected cases would be reviewed through a death audit conducted by the civic health department. All three deaths occurred within city limits. Dr Rathod further added that since April 24, eight cases of heat rash, heat exhaustion, and heat cramps have been reported across the city and district. "There has been no confirmed sunstroke casualty yet," he said.
The audit committee comprises the civil surgeon (CS), district health officer (DHO), medical officer (Health) of NMC, deans and faculty members of medical colleges, and expert doctors.

Monsoon Shield: NMC distributes safety kits to sanitation workers
Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) launched a city-wide drive to equip its sanitation workers — known as 'Swachhta Doots' — with essential safety gear ahead of monsoon. Often working in hazardous and unsanitary conditions, these frontline workers are now receiving protective kits aimed at safeguarding their health during the rainy season. Acting on the directives of municipal commissioner and administrator Abhijeet Chaudhari, and under the guidance of additional commissioner Vasumana Pant, the initiative is being implemented across all 10 zones of the city. The drive is being supervised by deputy commissioner Rajesh Bhagat and chief sanitation officer Dr Gajendra Mahalle, with special funds allocated for the effort. The kits include masks, rubber and cloth hand gloves, high-visibility jackets, and gumboots — each tailored to tackle monsoon-specific challenges like waterlogging, slippery surfaces, and increased exposure to disease-causing pathogens. Distribution is being carried out in a phased, zone-wise manner, covering not only the core zones but also high-risk areas like the Bhandewadi dumping yard, nallah cleaning units, shelter homes, and the municipal slaughterhouse. Laxmi Nagar, Hanuman Nagar, Dhantoli, Sataranjipura, Ashi Nagar, and Mangalwari each received 1,280 masks, while zones like Dharampeth, Gandhibagh, and Lakadganj were given 640 each. Additional supplies were sent to Nehru Nagar, NMC headquarters, and field sanitation workers. Thousands of gloves were also distributed, with Nehru Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, and Sataranjipura receiving over 2,000 pairs each. Safety jackets were dispatched in batches ranging from 100 to 400 per zone, and gumboots were prioritised for areas prone to flooding and waste exposure. Sanitation workers, often invisible yet indispensable to the city's hygiene system, face increased health hazards during the monsoon. NMC's gesture is being seen as both a practical intervention and a symbolic recognition of their vital role. One worker remarked, "We are used to working without expecting much. But receiving these items before the rains gives us the feeling that someone is thinking about our safety too. It matters." By prioritising the well-being of its sanitation force, the NMC not only ensured preparedness for monsoon-related challenges but also underlined the value of those who work tirelessly to keep Nagpur clean. Caregiver support scheme likely for those with benchmark disabilities
New Delhi: To help persons with benchmark disabilities having serious mobility issues, Delhi govt is working on a proposal to provide them with financial assistance to avail themselves of the services of caregivers. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Delhi social welfare minister Ravindra Indraj Singh told TOI that his department was working on a scheme and would soon bring a proposal before the council of ministers for its approval. "The project was discussed in the cabinet once. We will finalise the proposal soon and place it before the council of ministers again for approval," Singh said. The minister added the kin of persons with a benchmark disability of 80% or more would be provided with financial assistance, benefitting nearly 1,000 families. The department will soon conduct a survey on the number of people who will get the aid. Though the exact amount of the aid was yet to be finalised, the minister said, it could be around Rs 5,000. Delhi govt currently provides a monthly pension of Rs 2,500 to the disabled, but this amount is often too little for people from disadvantaged sections. Persons with benchmark disabilities are those who have not less than 40% of a specified disability, as per the disability certificate or the UDID card. There are 21 disabilities categorised, including locomotor disability, intellectual disability, mental illness, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, among others.

Fewer dengue cases this year as new control strategies employed
Panaji: A change in strategy has helped the health services bring down the non-seasonal incidence of dengue this year. It reported just four cases this May — one each from Mapusa, Cansarvarnem and Colvale in North Goa and from Margao in South Goa — as against the 21 cases logged during May last year. The significant drop in infections is also reflected in the 33 dengue cases recorded from Jan to May this year when compared to the 116 cases reported during the same period last year, deputy director and nodal officer for the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme, Dr Kalpana Mahatme, told TOI . An early start and comprehensive mapping of hotspots and places that reported upsurges of dengue last year helped the health services keep a close check on these areas. It has also started tyre collection drives and has advised people not to use tyres to hold down the plastic sheets on their roofs, but to use stones and other items in which water does not collect. 'We found dengue cases in Bhatulem, St Inez, Aivao and Taleigao, among other areas, last year, but couldn't identify the source of breeding until we saw water collecting on the tyres on roofs,' Mahatme said.
