Charles Barkley dares ESPN to fire him from 10-year, $210m contract before he's even made his network debut
Charles Barkley insists the NBA 's impending move to ESPN will not change anything about the way he behaves... and he's more than willing to be fired for airing his views.
The NBA icon is set to join his 'Inside the NBA' colleagues in their move from TNT to ESPN next season, but will not be holding back on the stricter network.
Instead, Barkley is even calling ESPN's bluff and daring them to fire him before he's even made his first appearance on air.
'I'm not going to change my personality,' he told Outkick when asked whether anything would change next season.
'They can't fire me! I make too much money to get fired. So, they can't fire me. First of all, if they fire me, they got to pay me for seven years, and I'm going to quit way before then.
'But if they want to fire me, I would love for them to do that. The only decision we've been making is how long I'm going to work… I'm not worried about getting fired. And nobody at ESPN is going to tell me what to say or do. Period.'
Barkley is a long-time host on 'Inside the NBA', which will be moving from TNT Sports to ESPN after the latter bought the rights to show the NBA.
The ex-NBA MVP and 11-time All-Star is said to have signed a 10-year, $210m contract to be an analyst on the iconic NBA show back in 2022, and therefore has plenty of years left to go.
ESPN has plenty of other shows that will likely be desperate to have Barkley on them, including First Take, Get Up and The Pat McAfee Show, but it appears he has no intention of doing more than he's contracted to do.
'Nobody's going to tell me what to say, or what to do. I get upset. [ESPN] is like, "The Lakers are contenders." I'm like, "No, they're not." They know they're not contenders.'
He even took aim at a soon-to-be ESPN colleague, noting: 'Kendrick Perkins, who don't know his ass from a hole in the wall, he's like, "The Lakers are contenders. The Lakers are contenders."
'And I said, "They're not contenders." And, clearly, if you lose in the first round [of the playoffs], you aren't a contender.'
Barkley has been very outspoken about TNT's loss of the rights to show the NBA, initially claiming he was going to retire after the news was announced.
He then U-turned 'to make sure the people I love and work with for the last 25 years got a job'.

Oilers F Connor Brown available for Game 1 vs. Panthers
June 2 - Edmonton forward Connor Brown, who has been sidelined by an undisclosed injury, practiced on Sunday and will be available when the Oilers play the visiting Florida Panthers in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final on Wednesday. Brown, 31, missed the final two games of the Oilers' five-game series against the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference finals, which concluded last Thursday. He exited Game 3 in the second period on May 25 after a thunderous hit from Stars defenseman Alex Petrovic that sent him to the ice. I feel good," Brown said after Sunday's session. "Nice to get a practice in with the team. Obviously, I haven't been practicing much. It's nice to get it going. I'm excited." Brown has eight points (five goals, three assists) in 14 playoff games. He totaled 30 points (13 goals, 17 assists) and a plus-9 rating while playing in all 82 games during the regular season. His spot on the third line has been filled by Viktor Arvidsson at right wing with center Adam Henrique and left wing Evander Kane. The Oilers are without forward Zach Hyman, who had surgery after sustaining an upper-body injury in Game 4 against the Stars. "I've got no idea what the line combinations are," said Brown, who skated with the fifth line on Sunday. "Obviously, I'm not trying to put my coaching hat on or anything like that. It's just my job to be ready to go." "I think he will be fine," Edmonton coach Kris Knoblauch said. "Obviously, you saw him on the ice and double shifting, and I'm pretty sure and confident that he will be fine for Game 1." --Field Level Media

Scranton couple inspired by The Office suggest Slough house swap
What do the American city of Scranton and the Berkshire town Slough have in common? For many TV fans, it's the UK and US versions of The Office, starring Ricky Gervais and Steve Carell as comical managers David Brent and Michael Scott respectively. More than 20 years since the UK version first aired, both shows continue to be binge-watched by fans across the one couple from Scranton, Philadelphia, is looking for people from Slough to do a house swap so they can compare the two. Andrew Maine and his wife Jennifer have lived in Scranton together for almost three years and think the town wasn't shown in the most flattering of lights. "If you mention Scranton to an outsider, the show is usually the first thing that comes to mind," Mr Maine told BBC Radio Berkshire. "Most people around here feel the show didn't do a good job of representing our area," Mr Maine explained."A lot of locals take offence the showrunners picked the area because it is economically depressed, boring and doesn't have much going for it."With websites dedicated to tours of Scranton for the show's fans, the couple feel the show has had an impact on how people see the city, which is near New York. Mr Maine continued: "There's so much to offer here, but we really feel like it's under-utilised."Hundreds of fans of The Office still make pilgrimages to Scranton every year. "The local government and businesses lean into this to a degree - there are several murals, a few exhibits, a walking tour and some merchandise." 'Unique link' "I love the show and it got me thinking, what impact has The Office had on Slough - is it the same as here?" Mr Maine is where the idea to do a cultural exchange came from and the couple is now looking to do a house swap or host some Slough Maine continued: "We could show them our area and then we could do the same thing over there."We thought it would be equal parts humorous and interesting. Sure, other cities have connections on a global scale, but ours, linked by a television show, is truly unique." You can follow BBC Berkshire on Facebook, X (Twitter), or Instagram.

Reports: Royals bringing up No. 1 prospect Jac Caglianone
June 2 - The No. 6 overall pick in the 2024 draft by the Kansas City Royals, highly touted prospect Jac Caglianone is on the verge of getting the call to the majors, according to multiple reports on Sunday night. Ranked as the No. 10 prospect by MLB Pipeline, the 22-year-old Caglianone has been tearing it up in his first professional season. At two levels, the 6-foot-5, 250-pound slugger is slashing .322/.389/.593 with 15 home runs and 56 RBIs in 49 games, including .319/.370/.723 with six home runs and 13 RBIs in 12 games at Triple-A Omaha. Caglianone has mainly played the outfield while at Triple-A and is expected to remain there when he joins the Royals for a road series against the St. Louis Cardinals that opens Tuesday. He was a two-way player at the University of Florida but set pitching aside to play first base when he was drafted last July. The Royals, who have scored the second-fewest runs (194) in MLB, are hopeful Caglianone's powerful bat in the middle of the lineup can boost a slumping offense, especially among the outfielders. Kansas City's outfield group ranks last in home runs (seven), RBIs (46) and slugging percentage (.330). --Field Level Media
