Looking for Canadian gardening supplies? 5 brands you can shop on Amazon
Canadian gardeners have patiently waited all winter for the frost to thaw and the days to get longer. Now, with promises of double-digit temperatures and sunny days on the horizon, it's time to kick-start your garden preparations for spring and summer.
As the Canadian growing season is relatively short, gardeners will want to make the most of the next few weeks for a lush, healthy garden this summer. Frost can linger into May, but the general rule of thumb for Canadian gardeners is to plant in and around the May long weekend.
Frost-hardy plants can be seeded earlier, like cold-tolerant perennials, leafy greens, carrots, and potatoes. Still, most gardeners will want to wait a few more weeks to plant warm-season vegetables like tomatoes, beans and peppers, herbs, and sun-loving flowers.
Whether you have acres to play with or a few pots on a small balcony, your gardening needs will look different. That said, high-quality gardening tools, supports, mulch, fertilizer and soil are universal. If you're near a greenhouse, now is a great time to visit. If you live further away or don't have access to a vehicle, Amazon Canada is a handy resource for Canadian gardening essentials — especially those from Canadian brands.

Smoky skies, local air quality impacts continues today
We're continuing to monitor the Canadian wildfire smoke and how it is impacting our local air quality. We're also watching a cold front approaching from the northwest today. That passing boundary and its associated precipitation should be able to 'wash' the atmosphere clean of the smoke by Friday. Until that 'wash' happens, we should expect another day of local air quality impacts. The hazy, smoky sunshine will illuminate the landscape in a unique, dull look just as we have become accustomed to the last few days. Similar to every other day this week, the smoke will remain high up in the atmosphere. That will result in another day with a 'Moderate' Air Quality Index readout. This means that the most sensitive groups (elderly, infants/toddlers, those with breathing problems/respiratory conditions) should take it extra easy if outside, especially as we toss more heat and humidity into the forecast today. Wildfire smoke brings poor air quality back to West Michigan
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — An air quality alert has been issued for the Lower Peninsula through noon on Friday as smoke from Canadian wildfires lingers. On Thursday morning, the Air Quality Index reached unhealthy levels across much of the state with the smoke thick enough at the surface to contribute to reduced visibility. You may get an occasional campfire scent along with added congestion and eye irritation due to the smoke. During this time, strenuous outdoor activity is discouraged, especially for sensitive groups such as those with asthma or heart disease who could experience a greater impact. Young children and the elderly are more susceptible to the effects of poor air quality. Limiting outdoor burning and sources of air pollution is helpful. While the air quality alert is set to expire at noon on Friday, it's possible the smoke may stick around into the weekend with no significant forcing or pattern change coming in the next few days to help push the smoke away. Stay with Storm Team 8 as we continue to track the smoke. If you have photos of the smoke that you'd like to share with News 8, to submit them. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Apocalyptic orange skies as Canada's wildfires rage
Skies turned orange over Northern Manitoba as wildfires continue to rage across the Canadian province. Eerie footage captured just outside The Pas on June 2 shows thick, choking haze descending over the town, with the sun vanishing behind walls of smoke. Renell Ross, 23, a local resident, said: "My sister and I were cooking when we noticed the sky gradually changing. "It became darker with a deep red hue, creating an increasingly ominous atmosphere." Ross prepared to flee but ultimately stayed, sealing the windows and switching off the AC to avoid the acrid smoke. Canada is grappling with over 200 active wildfires with more than half classified as "out of control," according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre. These fires have scorched approximately 2 million hectares (4.9 million acres) of land, primarily in provinces such as Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.
