The Open Championship returns this week to Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, a course that last hosted the major in 2019. With the world's best players arriving to take on one of golf's toughest tests, all eyes are on hometown hero Rory McIlroy, who enters the week in solid form and with a clear message, he's here to win.

Just a day after finishing second at the Scottish Open, McIlroy was back on the course at Portrush, starting his practice round on just four hours of sleep. The five-time major winner looked calm, steady, and reflective as he walked the same course where he once shot a record-setting 61 as a 16-year-old.

'The fact that I'm here at Portrush with the green jacket... I want to do my best this week to enjoy everything that comes my way,' McIlroy said, referencing his long-awaited Masters win earlier this year.
He admitted that after missing the cut in 2019, the emotional weight of playing at home caught him off guard.

"I'm in a good spot and, had a, not the last week was a pure preparation week, but it definitely, feel like it put me in a good spot heading into here," McIlroy added.
McIlroy's recent results back up his optimism. He finished T-6 at the Travelers Championship before his runner-up finish last week. 'I'm excited with where my game is,' he said. 'I showed some really good signs last week. I feel like I'm in a good spot.'
As the wind and pressure build at Portrush, McIlroy knows what's at stake. 'This was the tournament that was circled, even more so than the Masters,' he said. 'I still feel like there's a lot left in there.'

Iowa football defender named to Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list

Iowa football is known for punishing defense and standouts in the trenches. The Hawkeyes and defensive coordinator Phil Parker have reason to be fired up about what they bring back up front defensively heading into 2025. One piece of that defensive interior and his talent has been recognized before the 2025 campaign boots off. Senior defensive lineman Aaron Graves was named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list on Tuesday afternoon. The 6-foot-5, 295-pound defensive tackle has already garnered plenty of preseason pub. Graves was also named to the Lott Trophy preseason award watch list, is a preseason first-team All-Big Ten choice and second-team All-American per Phil Steele and a preseason second-team All-Big Ten selection by Athlon Sports. The Dayton, Iowa, native started all 13 games last season for the Hawkeyes, tallying 33 tackles, eight tackles for loss, six sacks, three pass breakups, three forced fumbles and a pair of quarterback hurries. In his career, Graves has appeared in 39 games and totaled 85 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and four pass breakups. Wilson misses out on history after no-look black

Showboating Kyren Wilson spurned the chance to make history when he attempted a no-look shot on the black in his 6-5 victory over Si Jiahui at the Shanghai Masters. The last-16 tie included six century breaks to tie the record for the most ever in a best-of-11 match - equalling Judd Trump and Neil Robertson's meeting in the 2016 Masters and Robertson's encounter with Mark Selby in 2020. Wilson reached 97 in the deciding frame but opted for a no-look shot and missed the black. The Englishman said he didn't realise he was on the verge of breaking the record but said it wouldn't have changed his approach. "I did the silly no-look thing," Wilson said. "Especially in China, I feel the sport is blowing up out here and a lot of it is about doing things a bit differently. You have to have a bit of fun. The crowd appreciate that sort of thing. "There's no chance I'd have just rolled that black in, even if I knew about the record. It is still about doing things differently. We are stepping into a modern era in snooker." Elsewhere, defending champion Trump advanced with a 6-2 victory against Robertson.

The streaming numbers are out for 'Happy Gilmore 2' and that's what we call a hole-in-one

The reviews on "Happy Gilmore 2" are mixed. The results are not. The sequel to Adam Sandler's 1996 comedy hit Netflix on July 25 and the numbers don't lie. According to Variety, 46.7 million viewers streamed the movie in just three days — making it the biggest U.S. opening weekend in Netflix history. It also hit a high-water mark for Sandler, who has been a key cog for the platform. The movie brings back Sandler in the lead role. Co-stars Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald are back to reprise their roles as Virginia Venit, a PGA Tour publicist-turned romantic interest for Happy, and cocky pro golfer Shooter McGavin, respectively. The film includes a ton of pro golfers making cameos as well, including Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler, Tony Finau, Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth and Will Zalatoris from the PGA Tour, as well as Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka from LIV Golf. Legends of the game make appearances, too, such as Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and John Daly. When asked, McDonald said he loved meeting many of the players, but one two-time Masters champ stood out. "He's a good man, Bubba Watson. I have known a few of these golf legends and legends-in-training," McDonald said. "But seeing them one-on-one, it's like: 'Oh, my God, that's Rory McIlroy. That's Bryson DeChambeau. That's Scottie Scheffler.' It was mind-blowing for me. And I came in on my days off just to hang out with them."
