Book of Ancestry sheds light on Forgotten Ones of Oakwood Cemetery

Yahoo19-02-2025

Recently released, 'The Book of Ancestry: Forgotten Ones of Oakwood Cemetery' sheds light on the lives of African Americans buried in the High Point cemetery's 'Colored' section.
'These were individuals. They were humans. They had a life, just like I have a life, and we wanted people to recognize that and see that they were important,' Linda Willard said.
Their legacies and contributions were ignored for decades.
'A lot of people thought that the only Black cemetery was on Leonard Street, but it wasn't,' Phyllis Bridges said.
'Someone told me in a meeting that there was no such thing as a 'Colored' section of Oakwood Cemetery, and I said, 'I beg your pardon,' there is,' Willard said.
Willard and Bridges have proven there is far more to the story. They have worked diligently over the last 10 years to give the section proper recognition, including working with the City of High Point for a historical marker.
'It's roughly a total of 425 people in that small section of the cemetery.' Bridges said. 'Phyllis and I began to talk, and we said we've got to take this further. We've got to research, we've got to find out what is going on with these people, who they were.'
Relying on materials such as obituaries, newspapers, birth certificates, death certificates, and census records, they have been able to tell the stories of approximately 80 people. 'Annie Pitts was a really fascinating one,' Willard said.
'She was hired to be the nanny or mammie, I've seen both terms used, of J. Elwood Cox's daughter, Clara Cox, and she stayed [employed] with Mr. Cox for 38 years until her death. She was really more than a servant. He treated her as a family member,' Willard said. 'Another one is Jesse Edmondson. He is a fascinating man. He owned what is said to be the only Black opera house in the entire state of North Carolina, but believe me, they were not singing Madame Butterfly in his opera house. It was burlesque.'
Bridges says another fascinating story is that of Minnie Edmondson. She was considered the wealthiest Black woman in High Point around the time of her death.
Bridges was able to connect with some of Minnie Edmondson's descendants and others.
'Linda and I made contact with several families over the years and being able to give them a piece of their history they didn't know exists, that's it for me,' she said. 'These people deserve to be recognized. They shouldn't be forgotten anymore,' Willard said.
Bridges and Willard are scheduled to hold a public discussion about the book at High Point Public Library on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Business Center.

The city of Augusta officially launching Operation City Clean-Up

AUGUSTA, Ga (WJBF) – Operation City Clean-Up is designed to offer meaningful service opportunities for people with court ordered community service. There have been community clean ups in the past, but this will be the first consistent one in the Augusta area. It will focus on high-traffic areas such as parks, streets and vacant lots. The clean-up started in the Harrisburg corridor but they will be going around to different areas that need to be cleaned. 'We're going to move this around to every single district throughout the county. Some Saturdays we'll be out in South Richmond County, others we may be downtown, we may be over in the Turpin Hill area, it just depends on the area that needs the most help,' said Garnett L. Johnson, Mayor of Augusta. For the city clean-ups, they are offering a 2 for 1 ratio to ensure accountability and encourage participation. One of the participants of the clean-up, Syntavous Smith, says he believes it will do just that, and he is happy to be serving his community. 'He came out here and surprised us, two for one you can't beat that! Four hours and you get four extra hours, so yeah, I think it's a good purpose and a good way to get people to actually do it. We're serving the purpose of cleaning up the community and helping the community out, anything for the community.' Mayor Johnson says he is looking forward to the future clean ups, and is hoping more people join. 'What's most important is hopefully we're gaining ambassadors to tell others as they're driving along the roadways not to throw litter out on the side of the road. As I have always said, I don't see this as punishment, keeping Augusta clean and having a sense of pride where we call home is very important and I'm just glad to have these individuals that are helping today and will be helping moving forward,' said Johnson. Operation City Clean-Up will happen every Saturday from 8am-12p. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

4 Gulf World dolphins adjust to Clearwater Marine Aquarium, 7 still await relocation

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WMBB) – On Wednesday, June 4, News 13 broke the story about the four Gulf World Marine Park dolphins being relocated to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Crews arrived at Gulf World around 11 p.m. Tuesday, loaded up the animals and headed south. They arrived in Clearwater around 11 a.m. E.T. Wednesday morning. All the rough-toothed female dolphins appeared to immediately take to their new surroundings. The staff in Clearwater set benchmarks for the dolphins to gauge how they are adjusting. On Friday, June 6, they told local officials all four of the animals blew away those benchmarks and are 'thriving' in their new home. 4 Gulf World dolphins moved to Clearwater Marine Aquarium As for the seven remaining bottle-nosed dolphins still at Gulf World, local officials told News 13 they are still waiting on the results of some tissue and fluid tests done within the last week. The results will determine if the dolphins are healthy and able to be placed with other dolphins. Once they're medically clear, they'll be transferred to another facility that has yet to be confirmed. Some in the decision-making process don't want them to go to another 'Dolphin Company-owned' facility. They point to the fact that the company is currently in bankruptcy proceedings and the poor conditions at Gulf World. Five dolphins have died at Gulf World since October 2024. The public outcry is responsible for the relocation of all of the marine animals. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
