‘We are exploring options to promote floriculture under BHGY'
Excerpts:-
Q: Your department plays a key role for overall development of people at the grassroots. Tell us about the action plans.
A: Right from day one, our govt's focus has been mainly to bridge the gap between have and have nots. A state like Jharkhand is still confronted with several developmental challenges. During the first stint of Hemant Soren led alliance govt between 2019-24, several flagship schemes were conceptualised with focus on creating livelihoods and empowering lives at the grassroots.
The successful execution has benefitted several people which is why public brought this alliance govt back to governance for the second consecutive time.
As rural development minister, me and my team's mandate is to reach the last mile to upgrade people's lives through various interventions. Results are gradually getting visible now.
Q: Can you elaborate?
A: For example, the Birsa Harit Gram Yojana (BHGY), the state govt's flagship scheme under MNREGA.

During the previous stint of our alliance govt, it was renamed, repackaged and relaunched during Covid-19 to address challenges of pandemic induced migration and joblessness. In the last five years, it is now silently leading to a new revolution of economic empowerment in rural areas. Beneficiaries under this scheme, who took up mango plantation, are now feeling financially empowered.
Q: The drive is also leading to environmental cause.
A: Exactly. In the last five years, under this scheme, we managed to plant 2 crore saplings, of which around 1.5 lakh are fruit bearing ones, and 50,000 timber. This year, we are eyeing to plant one lakh more trees under the scheme. These certainly add to the green cause. We are now eyeing to monetise the carbon credits generated through this scheme so that beneficiaries can earn additional income. Plans are underway.
Q: What more innovations BHGY is planning?
A: Along with fruit bearing trees, I have asked the department to now focus on flowers (floriculture). There is an immense scope for it in Jharkhand as we are currently dependent on other states to meet our requirements of flowers. This will further help scores of women self help groups to get new market and options for livelihood. Also, besides mangoes, we are now also planning to promote litchi plantation. This apart, we are exploring ways for proper market linkages to beneficiaries.

Pawar posted on his X account that the university has perhaps forgotten that it should not become part of a political agenda and should focus on improving academic quality and strengthening the voice of democracy rather than engaging in hero worship. Raj Gopal fires fresh salvo, asks why 2 brothers can't be ministers
1 2 Hyderabad: Congress MLA Komatireddy Raj Gopal Reddy on Tuesday fired yet another salvo at Congress top guns, stating that didn't the party leadership know that they are two brothers, Komatireddy Raj Gopal Reddy and Venkat Reddy, in the grand old party, when promising him a cabinet berth. "I was promised a cabinet berth at the time of coming back into Congress from BJP during the assembly elections (in Nov 2023). After we two brothers won the assembly polls, again I was promised a cabinet berth at the time of the Lok Sabha elections (May 2024) to ensure the victory of Congress from Bhongir parliament seat. At least, then they would have been well aware that two brothers were legislators in Congress," he said. Stating that he was waiting patiently for the party high command to honour its promise of giving a cabinet berth to him, he said denial of a ministry to him would be deemed as an injustice to the the people of Munugode constituency, represented by him. "I will tolerate injustice to me but not to the people of my constituency," he said. After Louisiana, Linda McMahon reaches Arkansas on 50-state education tour: Inside the state's vision for students
US Secretary of Education Linda McMahon has brought her Returning Education to the States tour to Arkansas, the second stop in a cross-country initiative aimed at spotlighting how states are reshaping K-12 learning when given more autonomy. The 50-state tour, launched in Louisiana earlier this month, is central to the Trump administration's push to decentralize education policy, moving decision-making power from Washington, D.C., to state capitals. In Arkansas, McMahon focused on two priorities that define the state's education vision: driving up literacy rates and equipping students with skills for in-demand jobs. A day in Arkansas McMahon's visit began at Don R. Roberts Elementary School in Little Rock, where she toured classrooms and joined a literacy roundtable with educators, administrators, and local leaders. The discussion centered on Arkansas' approach to early reading interventions, teacher training, and the integration of literacy goals into broader academic standards. She then traveled to the Saline County Career & Technical Campus, which offers high school students hands-on training in fields such as healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and information technology. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Website Made Simple [Find Out] SearchPad Learn More Undo According to the US Department of Education, McMahon called the facility an example of how 'career readiness can be embedded into high school education without compromising academic rigour.' Arkansas' education vision Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders' education blueprint, which McMahon praised during her visit, includes: Universal school choice giving families the ability to direct state funds to public, private, or charter schools that best fit their needs. Literacy benchmarks setting the expectation that every student will read at grade level by the end of third grade. Increased teacher pay, raising salaries to attract and retain quality educators. Expanded career and technical education linking high school programs directly with local labor market demands. 'Arkansas is an excellent example of what it looks like to prioritise students through school choice and programs that prepare students for in-demand careers,' McMahon said, as quoted by the US Department of Education. A contrast to Louisiana's challenges The tour's first stop in Louisiana focused on a state grappling with persistent gaps in literacy, graduation rates, and workforce readiness. There, McMahon met with teachers and school leaders implementing state-driven reforms to improve reading outcomes. In contrast, Arkansas was presented as a model already in the implementation phase, with measurable progress in both academic and technical pathways. The US Department of Education noted that the tour aims to 'share best practices from across the country' so states can adapt successful strategies to their own contexts. The political context The Returning Education to the States tour is part of a broader Republican-led education agenda that promotes parental choice, state innovation, and reduced federal oversight. Supporters argue that local control makes education more responsive to community needs, while critics warn it may widen disparities between districts. In Arkansas, those tensions were visible. While state leaders welcomed McMahon's visit, a small group of parents and education advocates staged protests outside Roberts Elementary, voicing concerns that universal school choice diverts resources from traditional public schools. What's next on the tour With Arkansas now in the books, McMahon will head to Tennessee, where debates over school vouchers and teacher pay have dominated the education landscape. Each stop is intended to provide a different lens on state-led innovation — from early literacy strategies to career-aligned curricula. As the US Department of Education put it, the goal is to 'decentralize power out of Washington, let states innovate on education policy, and put students first.' Ready to navigate global policies?
